    The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important legumes for direct human consumption (Lin et al. 2008). Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum is the most widespread, recurrent and devastating disease of the common bean in Latin America and Africa (Pastor-Corrales and Tu 1989). The genetic mapping is carried out using segregating populations. Obtaining segregating populations for genetic mapping have been standard practice in the common bean research (Gepts et al. 1993; Blair et al. 2006). These populations have led to detailed studies and promising to greater efficiency in the genetic breeding of the crop worldwide, but have as limitation, the small size (Sanglard et al. 2013).     Angiostrongylus vasorum: Experimental Infection and Larval Development in Omalonyx matheroni

    The susceptibility and suitability of Omalonyx matheroni as an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus vasorum and the characteristics of larval recovery and development were investigated. Mollusks were infected, and from the 3rd to the 25th day after infection, larvae were recovered from groups of 50 individuals. The first observation of L2 was on the 5th day, and the first observation of L3 was on the 10th day. From the 22nd day on, all larvae were at the L3 stadium. Larval recovery varied from 78.2% to 95.2%. We found larval development to be faster in O. matheroni than in Biomphalaria glabrata. Our findings indicate that this mollusk is highly susceptible to A. vasorum. Infective L3 were orally inoculated into a dog, and the prepatent period was 39 days. This is the first study to focus on O. matheroni as an intermediate host of A. vasorum

    Correlação entre estado nutricional e ingestão alimentar em pacientes de hemodiálise

    BACKGROUND: Patients in end-stage renal disease often suffer from poor appetite, various comorbidities, and dietary restrictions. Despite regular hemodialysis, nutritional imbalances are frequently reported. Aiming to correlate nutritional status with food ingestion, a prospective study was done in an outpatient group. METHODS: Stable patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis for at least 3 months (n = 44) were investigated by dietary recall and standard anthropometric, biochemical, and bioimpedance determinations, including subjective and objective global assessment. The mean age of the group was 47.0 ± 16.9 years, and 63.6% were men. Body mass index was 22.2 ± 3.9 kg/m² (mean ± SD), calorie intake was 1471 ± 601 kcal/day (20.7 ± 6.7 kcal/kg/day), and protein ingestion was 74.3 ± 16.6 g protein/day (1.2 g/kg/day). Dietary and clinical findings were correlated with nutritional indices by linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Malnutrition estimated by subjective global assessment was very common (>;90%), despite the fact that body mass index and serum albumin were within an acceptable range in the majority of the population. Objective global assessment yelded roughly comparable numerical findings, with 6.8% being well nourished, 61.4% at nutritional risk or lightly undernourished, 29.6% moderately malnourished, and 2.3% severely malnourished. Total calorie intake was devoid of associations, but protein, carbohydrate, and lipid input positively correlated with triceps skinfold (P=.02). Lipid ingestion was the only marker directly associated with arm circumference, and it correlated with body mass index, as well as with total body fat (bioimpedance analysis) (POBJETIVOS: Pacientes em fase final de enfermidade renal frequentemente sofrem de falta de apetite, várias comorbidades e restrições dietéticas, e a despeito de hemodiálise regular, desequilíbrios nutricionais são frequentemente relatados. Com o propósito de correlacionar estado nutricional com ingestão alimentar, um estudo prospectivo foi realizado com pacientes ambulatoriais. MÉTODOS: Doentes estáveis sibmetidos a hemodiálise crônica por no mínimo 3 meses (n= 44) foram investigados mediante recordatório alimentar e determinações convencionais antropométricas, bioquímicas e de bioimpedância , incluindo-se avaliação global subjetiva e também objetiva. A idade do grupo era de 47.0 ± 16.9 anos com 63.6% de homens. O índice de massa corporal situava-se em 22.2 ± 3.9 kg/m2, a ingestão calórica foi de 1471 ± 601 kcal/dia (20.7 ± 6.7 kcal/kg/dia) e o consumo proteico atingiu 74.3 ± 16.6 g proteina/dia (1.2 g/kg/dia) . As variáveis dietéticas e clínicas foram correlacionadas com os índices nutricionais através da análise de regressão linear. RESULTADOS: A desnutrição estimada pela avalia;áo global subjetiva foi muito comum (>;90%), apesar de que o índice de massa corporal e a taxa de albumina estavam aceitáveis na maioria da população. A avaliação objetiva global evidenciou resultados numericamente parecidos, com 6,8% bem nutridos, 61,4% com risco nutricional ou desnutrição leve, 29,6% no patamar moderado e 2,3% exibindo desnutrição grave. O ganho calórico total não apresentou associações, todavia ingressos de proteina, carboidratos e lípides se correlacionaram positivamente com a prega cutânea do tríceps (P=0.02). Apenas a ingestão lipídica associou-se diretamente com a circunferência do braço, demonstrando ainda correlação com o índice de massa corporal bem como com a gordura corpórea total (bioimpedância) (

    Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum L., is one of the most important fungal diseases of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L). Genetic resistance is the most effective method for this disease control. So far, twenty one resistance genes have been already characterized, and among them, only eight are Andean and due to it, the search for Andean resistance sources is really necessary.     Series expansion for a stochastic sandpile

    Using operator algebra, we extend the series for the activity density in a one-dimensional stochastic sandpile with fixed particle density p, the first terms of which were obtained via perturbation theory [R. Dickman and R. Vidigal, J. Phys. A35, 7269 (2002)]. The expansion is in powers of the time; the coefficients are polynomials in p. We devise an algorithm for evaluating expectations of operator products and extend the series to O(t^{16}).     Effect of starvation and subsequent feeding on glycogen concentration, behavior and mortality in the golden mussel Limnoperna Fortunei (Dunker, 1857) (Bivalvia: Mytilidae)

    The success of Limnoperna fortunei as an invasive species is related to its physiological plasticity that allows them to endure adverse environmental conditions. Starvation tolerance is considered to be an important trait associated with bivalve invasiveness. In natural ecosystems, food resources can vary during the year, exposing mussels to variable periods of starvation or limited food availability. Thus, mussels have developed physiological strategies to tolerate fluctuations in food availability. Glycogen concentration has been used in different monitoring studies as an indicator of the nutritional condition of bivalves. The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological responses of L. fortunei based on the glycogen concentrations of specimens under four treatments, comprising differentcombinations of feeding and starvation, during 125 days. The experiment was carried out in two phases. In the phase I, mussels were divided in two treatments: starvation (S) and feeding (F). After 100 days, tissue samples were collected to quantify glycogen concentrations and, each phase I group was divided in two subgroups: starvation (S) and feeding (F), resulting in four treatments. In the phase II, that lasted 25 days, starvation specimens (S) from phase I were allowed to feed (starvation-feeding treatment, or S-F), or continued to undergo starvation (starvation-starvation treatment, or S-S) and the feeding specimens (F) continued feeding (feeding-feeding group, or F-F), or were subjected to starvation (feeding-starvation treatment, or F-S). Behavior (valve-closing) and mortality were recorded in 24 h intervals. After the 25 days (phase II) all specimens were killed, and thei r soft tissue was removed to quantify glycogen concentrations. The glycogen concentration of the S-F treatment was lower than that of the F-S treatment, which was initially allowed to feed (phase I) and then subjected to starvation (phase II). Stability in the glycogen concentrations was observed when the phase II feeding conditions were maintained during the experiments, as observed in the S-S (continued starvation) and F-F (continued feeding) treatments. Based on our glycogen concentrations results, the golden mussel shows a higher tolerance to starvation (125 days) than has previously been published, which suggests that its tolerance strongly influences its invasive behavior.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
