Observation of a narrow baryon resonance with positive strangeness formed in Xe collisions
The charge-exchange reaction K^+ Xe --> K^0 p Xe' is investigated using the
data of the DIANA experiment. The distribution of the pK^0 effective mass shows
a prominent enhancement near 1538 MeV formed by \sim 80 events above the
background, whose width is consistent with being entirely due to the
experimental resolution. Under the selections based on a simulation of K^+Xe
collisions, the statistical significance of the signal reaches 5.5\sigma. We
interpret this observation as strong evidence for formation of a pentaquark
baryon with positive strangeness, \Theta^+(uudd\bar{s}), in the charge-exchange
reaction K^+ n --> K^0 p on a bound neutron. The mass of the \Theta^+ baryon is
measured as m(\Theta^+) = 1538+-2 MeV. Using the ratio between the numbers of
resonant and non-resonant charge-exchange events in the peak region, the
intrinsic width of this baryon resonance is determined as \Gamma(\Theta^+) =
0.34+-0.10 MeV.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Detecting the (Quasi-)Two-Body Decays of Leptons in Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
Novel detector schemes are proposed for the short-baseline neutrino
experiments of next generation, aimed at exploring the large-
domain of \omutau oscillations in the appearance mode. These schemes emphasize
good spectrometry for charged particles and for electromagnetic showers and
efficient reconstruction of \ypi_gg decays. The basic elements are a sequence
of relatively thin emulsion targets, immersed in magnetic field and
interspersed with electronic trackers, and a fine-grained electromagnetic
calorimeter built of lead glass. These elements act as an integral whole in
reconstructing the electromagnetic showers. This conceptual scheme shows good
performance in identifying the (quasi-)two-body decays by their
characteristic kinematics and in selecting the electronic decays of the .Comment: 34 pages, 8 figure
Experimental search for radiative decays of the pentaquark baryon \Theta^+(1540)
The data on the reactions K^+Xe --> K^0 \gamma X and K^+Xe --> K^+ \gamma X,
obtained with the bubble chamber DIANA, have been analyzed for possible
radiative decays of the \Theta^+(1540) baryon: \Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma and
\Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma. No signals have been observed, and we derive the
upper limits \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma) / \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p) <
0.032 and \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma) / \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n) <
0.041 which, using our previous measurement of \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> KN) =
(0.39+-0.10) MeV, translate to \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma) < 8 keV and
\Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma) < 11 keV at 90% confidence level. We have
also measured the cross sections of K^+ -induced reactions involving emission
of a neutral pion: \sigma(K^+n --> K^0 p \pi^0) = (68+-18) \mub and \sigma(K^+N
--> K^+ N \pi^0) = (30+-8) \mub for incident K^+ momentum of 640 MeV.Comment: 8 page
First observation of a narrow charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) -> Ds eta and D0 K+
We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) at a mass
of 2632.6+/-1.6 MeV/c^2 in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production
experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, Ds eta and
D0 K+. In the Ds eta decay mode we observe an excess of 49.3 events with a
significance of 7.2sigma at a mass of 2635.9+/-2.9 MeV/c^2. There is a
corresponding peak of 14 events with a significance of 5.3sigma at 2631.5+/-1.9
MeV/c^2 in the decay mode D0 K+. The decay width of this state is <17 MeV/c^2
at 90% confidence level. The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(Dseta)
is 0.16+/-0.06. The mechanism which keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its
decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the Ds eta decay mode.Comment: 5 pages, 3 included eps figures. v2 as accepted for publication by

First Measurement of pi e -> pi e gamma Pion Virtual Compton Scattering
Pion Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi e --> pi e gamma
was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi-
beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi- and the
final state pi-, electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral
perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the
experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (9)
and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the
kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The
corresponding pi- VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+-13 nb, in
agreement with the theoretical expectation sigma=34.7 nb.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, 25 references, SELEX home page is
