Pulling adsorbed polymers from surfaces with the AFM: stick versus slip, peeling versus gliding
We consider the response of an adsorbed polymer that is pulled by an AFM
within a simple geometric framework. We separately consider the cases of i)
fixed polymer-surface contact point, ii) sticky case where the polymer is
peeled off from the substrate, and iii) slippery case where the polymer glides
over the surface. The resultant behavior depends on the value of the surface
friction coefficient and the adsorption strength. Our resultant force profiles
in principle allow to extract both from non-equilibrium force-spectroscopic

The supercuspidal representations of p-adic classical groups
Let G be a unitary, symplectic or special orthogonal group over a locally
compact non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic. We
construct many new supercuspidal representations of G, and Bushnell-Kutzko
types for these representations. Moreover, we prove that every irreducible

A moderate increase in dietary zinc reduces DNA strand breaks in leukocytes and alters plasma proteins without changing plasma zinc concentrations.
BackgroundFood fortification has been recommended to improve a population's micronutrient status. Biofortification techniques modestly elevate the zinc content of cereals, but few studies have reported a positive impact on functional indicators of zinc status.ObjectiveWe determined the impact of a modest increase in dietary zinc that was similar to that provided by biofortification programs on whole-body and cellular indicators of zinc status.DesignEighteen men participated in a 6-wk controlled consumption study of a low-zinc, rice-based diet. The diet contained 6 mg Zn/d for 2 wk and was followed by 10 mg Zn/d for 4 wk. To reduce zinc absorption, phytate was added to the diet during the initial period. Indicators of zinc homeostasis, including total absorbed zinc (TAZ), the exchangeable zinc pool (EZP), plasma and cellular zinc concentrations, zinc transporter gene expression, and other metabolic indicators (i.e., DNA damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress), were measured before and after each dietary-zinc period.ResultsTAZ increased with increased dietary zinc, but plasma zinc concentrations and EZP size were unchanged. Erythrocyte and leukocyte zinc concentrations and zinc transporter expressions were not altered. However, leukocyte DNA strand breaks decreased with increased dietary zinc, and the level of proteins involved in DNA repair and antioxidant and immune functions were restored after the dietary-zinc increase.ConclusionsA moderate 4-mg/d increase in dietary zinc, similar to that which would be expected from zinc-biofortified crops, improves zinc absorption but does not alter plasma zinc. The repair of DNA strand breaks improves, as do serum protein concentrations that are associated with the DNA repair process. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02861352

Asymptotics and local constancy of characters of p-adic groups
In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters
of reductive -adic groups when the representation varies. Our approach
is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related
results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of relative to
the formal degree of , which we are able to prove in the case where
is a tame supercuspidal. The proof builds on J.-K.~Yu's construction and the

Escape from a metastable well under a time-ramped force
Thermally activated escape of an over-damped particle from a metastable well
under the action of a time-ramped force is studied. We express the mean first
passage time (MFPT) as the solution to a partial differential equation, which
we solve numerically for a model case. We discuss two approximations of the
MFPT, one of which works remarkably well over a wide range of loading rates,
while the second is easy to calculate and can provide a valuable first

Quantum dynamical theory for squeezing the output of a Bose-Einstein condensate
A linear quantum dynamical theory for squeezing the output of the trapped
Bose-Einstein condensate is presented with the Bogoliubov approximation. We
observe that the non-classical properties, such as sub-Poisson distribution and
quadrature squeezing effect, mutually oscillate between the quantum states of
the applied optical field and the resulting atom laser beam with time. In
particular, it is shown that an initially squeezed optical field will lead to

Coherent Tunneling of Atoms from Bose-condensed Gases at Finite Temperatures
Tunneling of atoms between two trapped Bose-condensed gases at finite
temperatures is explored using a many-body linear response tunneling formalism
similar to that used in superconductors. To lowest order, the tunneling
currents can be expressed quite generally in terms of the single-particle
Green's functions of the isolated Bose gases. A coherent first-order tunneling
Josephson current between two atomic Bose-condensates is found, in addition to
coherent and dissipative contributions from second-order
condensate-noncondensate and noncondensate-noncondensate tunneling. Our work is
a generalization of Meier and Zwerger, who recently treated tunneling between
uniform atomic Bose gases. We apply our formalism to the analysis of an
out-coupling experiment induced by light wave fields, using a simple
Bogoliubov-Popov quasiparticle approximation for the trapped Bose gas. For
tunneling into the vacuum, we recover the results of Japha, Choi, Burnett and
Band, who recently pointed out the usefulness of studying the spectrum of
out-coupled atoms. In particular, we show that the small tunneling current of
noncondensate atoms from a trapped Bose gas has a broad spectrum of energies,
with a characteristic structure associated with the Bogoliubov quasiparticle
