    Shri. Ramdas Tukaram Kokare, presently working as Chief Officer in Municipal Corporation, Karjat which has a total population of 30,000 and generates Class III Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in the tune of 12 metric tonnes per day. Earlier during 2010 to 2015 he had served as Chief Officer at Municipal Corporation Dapoli, Maharashtra and during 2015-2017 he at Vengurla also in Maharashtra. In 2010, Shri Ramdas came up with the idea of waste management at the source level and decided to segregate plastic waste into recyclable and non-recyclable categories. Plastic carry bags of less than 50 micron thickness were in the non-recyclable category, while bottles, packaging material of food items and wrappers were to be recycled for further usage. Local self-help groups were roped in to produce paper bags and some awareness campaigns were organized

    On the polycrystalline forms of gypsum and their optical behaviour

    The paper brings to notice the remarkable optical effects exhibited by a polycrystalline form of gypsum which is different from both alabaster and satin-spar in its structure. It is not a fibrous material but consists of fine rods orientated nearly parallel to the b-axis of gypsum and exhibits a ready cleavage along planes perpendicular to that axis. A source of light viewed through a plate of the material exhibits, in general, three concentric circles which are polarised in a characteristic fashion. The source itself appears as a luminous point on the second or middle circle. It is shown that these circles arise by reason of the reflection of light at the boundaries between the rod-like crystals composing the material, for which the name "fascicular gypsum" is accordingly proposed. A theoretical explanation of the phenomena is given and photographs of the same are reproduced. Observations on the optical behaviour of alabaster and of satin-spar are also reported

    Unique Aspects of the Design of Phase I/II Clinical Trials of Stem Cell Therapy

    This chapter will review the unique aspects and limitations of the design of phase I/II (safety and efficacy) clinical trials of stem cell therapy. Although the classical pharmacologic principles applicable to drugs are not applicable to biologic (live cell) therapeutic agents, an important stage in the development of any new therapeutic agent is the establishment of an optimal dosage and delivery route. This can be particularly challenging when the treatment is a biologic agent, such as stem cells, that may exert its therapeutic effects via complex or poorly understood mechanisms. To date, clinical studies have shown inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between cell dose and clinical outcomes. This can be at least partially attributed to variations in donor cell type, source, characteristics, dosing/concentration, delivery route, underlying mechanisms of action, and efficacy endpoints tested. The current recommendations will be reviewed herein to give new investigators a general understanding of the unique issues that need to be considered and addressed when designing a stem cell therapy phase I/II clinical trial

    Direct observation by resonant tunneling of the B^+ level in a delta-doped silicon barrier

    We observe a resonance in the conductance of silicon tunneling devices with a delta-doped barrier. The position of the resonance indicates that it arises from tunneling through the B^+ state of the boron atoms of the delta-layer. Since the emitter Fermi level in our devices is a field-independent reference energy, we are able to directly observe the diamagnetic shift of the B^+ level. This is contrary to the situation in magneto-optical spectroscopy, where the shift is absorbed in the measured ionization energy.Comment: submitted to PR

    Loss of epigenetic regulator TET2 and oncogenic KIT regulate myeloid cell transformation via PI3K pathway

    Mutations in KIT and TET2 are associated with myeloid malignancies. We show that loss of TET2-induced PI3K activation and -increased proliferation is rescued by targeting the p110α/δ subunits of PI3K. RNA-Seq revealed a hyperactive c-Myc signature in Tet2-/- cells, which is normalized by inhibiting PI3K signaling. Loss of TET2 impairs the maturation of myeloid lineage-derived mast cells by dysregulating the expression of Mitf and Cebpa, which is restored by low-dose ascorbic acid and 5-azacytidine. Utilizing a mouse model in which the loss of TET2 precedes the expression of oncogenic Kit, similar to the human disease, results in the development of a non-mast cell lineage neoplasm (AHNMD), which is responsive to PI3K inhibition. Thus, therapeutic approaches involving hypomethylating agents, ascorbic acid, and isoform-specific PI3K inhibitors are likely to be useful for treating patients with TET2 and KIT mutations

    Raman scattering studies as functions of temperature, magnetic field, and Gd-substitution are used to investigate the evolution of magnetic polarons and spin-carrier interactions through the metal-insulator transition in Eu1x_{1-x}Gdx_{x}O. These studies reveal a greater richness of phase behavior than have been previously observed using transport measurements: a spin-fluctuation-dominated paramagnetic (PM) phase regime for T >> T^{*} >> TC_{C}, a two-phase regime for T << T^{*} in which magnetic polarons develop and coexist with a remnant of the PM phase, and an inhomogeneous ferromagnetic phase regime for T << TC_{C}

    Theoretical Study on Superconductivity in Boron-Doped Diamond

    We consider superconductivity in boron (B) doped diamond using a simplified model for the valence band of diamond. We treat the effects of substitutional disorder of B ions by the coherent potential approximation (CPA) and those of the attractive force between holes by the ladder approximation under the assumption of instantaneous interaction with the Debye cutoff. We thereby calculate the quasiparticle life time, the evolution of the single-particle spectra due to doping, and the effect of disorder on the superconducting critical temperature TcT_c.
