Transverse Spectra of Hadrons in Central Collisions at RHIC and LHC from pQCD+Saturation+Hydrodynamics and from pQCD+Energy Losses
We study the transverse spectra of hadrons in nearly central collisions
at RHIC and LHC in a broad transverse momentum range Low- spectra are
calculated by using boost-invariant hydrodynamics with initial energy and
net-baryon densities from the EKRT pQCD+saturation model. High- spectra
are obtained from pQCD jet calculation including the energy loss of the parton

Interpreting eddy covariance data from heterogeneous Siberian tundra : land-cover-specific methane fluxes and spatial representativeness
The non-uniform spatial integration, an inherent feature of the eddy covariance (EC) method, creates a challenge for flux data interpretation in a heterogeneous environment, where the contribution of different land cover types varies with flow conditions, potentially resulting in biased estimates in comparison to the areally averaged fluxes and land cover attributes. We modelled flux footprints and characterized the spatial scale of our EC measurements in Tiksi, a tundra site in northern Siberia. We used leaf area index (LAI) and land cover class (LCC) data, derived from very-high-spatial-resolution satellite imagery and field surveys, and quantified the sensor location bias. We found that methane (CH4) fluxes varied strongly with wind direction (-0.09 to 0.59 mu gCH(4)m(-2) s(-1) on average) during summer 2014, reflecting the distribution of different LCCs. Other environmental factors had only a minor effect on short-term flux variations but influenced the seasonal trend. Using footprint weights of grouped LCCs as explanatory variables for the measured CH4 flux, we developed a multiple regression model to estimate LCC group-specific fluxes. This model showed that wet fen and graminoid tundra patches in locations with topography-enhanced wetness acted as strong sources (1.0 mu gCH(4) m(-2) s(-1) during the peak emission period), while mineral soils were significant sinks (-0.13 mu gCH(4) m(-2) s(-1)). To assess the representativeness of measurements, we upscaled the LCC group-specific fluxes to different spatial scales. Despite the landscape heterogeneity and rather poor representativeness of EC data with respect to the areally averaged LAI and coverage of some LCCs, the mean flux was close to the CH4 balance upscaled to an area of 6.3 km(2), with a location bias of 14 %. We recommend that EC site descriptions in a heterogeneous environment should be complemented with footprint-weighted high-resolution data on vegetation and other site characteristics.Peer reviewe

Flux-free conductance modulation in a helical Aharonov-Bohm interferometer
A novel conductance oscillation in a twisted quantum ring composed of a
helical atomic configuration is theoretically predicted. Internal torsion of
the ring is found to cause a quantum phase shift in the wavefunction that
describes the electron's motion along the ring. The resulting conductance
oscillation is free from magnetic flux penetrating inside the ring, which is in
complete contrast with the ordinary Aharonov-Bohm effect observed in untwisted

The fate of aspergilloma patients after surgical treatment-experience from 22 cases
Background: Patients with pulmonary aspergillomas occasionally undergo surgery but it is somewhat unclear who of these patients benefit from surgical treatment. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated all 22 patients that underwent surgery in Helsinki University Central Hospital between 2004 and 2017. We assessed their clinical backgrounds, anti-fungal medication, indication for surgery, complications, recurrent infections and survival. Results: Of the 22 patients, 14 male and 8 female, mean age 56, an underlying pulmonary disease was present in 20. On immunosuppressive medication were 8 (36%). Most received anti-fungal medication preoperatively (n=12) and/or postoperatively (n=17), 3 patients did not receive anti-fungal medication. Length of the medication periods were diverse. Main indication for surgery was haemoptysis. One in-hospital-death occurred, and other complications included prolonged air-leak, postoperative pneumonia, pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. No Aspergillus empyema or pleurites occurred. Five-year survival was 54%. One in-hospital-death and one other death were the result of Aspergillus disease, other deaths were unrelated to Aspergillus. Recurrent disease occurred in four cases. Three of these patients were asthma patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Conclusions: Overall results of surgery in this cohort were good and number of complications was low. Therapy with antifungals was diverse. Surgical treatment of aspergilloma can be life-saving for patients suffering of haemoptysis, and patients with restricted disease and well-preserved pulmonary capacity may benefit from surgery. Careful patient selection is crucial.Peer reviewe

RHIC-tested predictions for low- and high- hadron spectra in nearly central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC
We study the hadron spectra in nearly central + collisions at RHIC and
LHC in a broad transverse momentum range. We cover the low- spectra using
longitudinally boost-invariant hydrodynamics with initial energy and net-baryon
number densities from the perturbative QCD (pQCD)+saturation model. Build-up of
the transverse flow and sensitivity of the spectra to a single decoupling
temperature \Tdec are studied. Comparison with RHIC data at \ssNN=130 and
200 GeV suggests a rather high value \Tdec=150 MeV. The high- spectra
are computed using factorized pQCD cross sections, nuclear parton
distributions, fragmentation functions, and describing partonic energy loss in
the quark-gluon plasma by quenching weights. Overall normalization is fixed on
the basis of p+(p) data and the strength of energy loss is
determined from RHIC Au+Au data. Uncertainties are discussed. With constraints
from RHIC data, we predict the spectra of hadrons in 5 % most central
Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy \ssNN=5500 GeV. Due to the closed
framework for primary production, we can also predict the net-baryon number at
midrapidity, as well as the strength of partonic energy losses at the LHC. Both
at the LHC and RHIC, we recognize a rather narrow crossover region in the
spectra, where the hydrodynamic and pQCD fragmentation components become of
equal size. We argue that in this crossover region the two contributions are to
a good approximation mutually independent. In particular, our results suggest a
wider -region of applicability for hydrodynamical models at the LHC than
