Signatures of Classical Periodic Orbits on a Smooth Quantum System
Gutzwiller's trace formula and Bogomolny's formula are applied to a
non--specific, non--scalable Hamiltonian system, a two--dimensional anharmonic
oscillator. These semiclassical theories reproduce well the exact quantal

Bulk viscosity in hyperonic star and r-mode instability
We consider a rotating neutron star with the presence of hyperons in its
core, using an equation of state in an effective chiral model within the
relativistic mean field approximation. We calculate the hyperonic bulk
viscosity coefficient due to nonleptonic weak interactions. By estimating the
damping timescales of the dissipative processes, we investigate its role in the
suppression of gravitationally driven instabilities in the -mode. We observe
that -mode instability remains very much significant for hyperon core
temperature of around K, resulting in a comparatively larger instability
window. We find that such instability can reduce the angular velocity of the
rapidly rotating star considerably upto , with as
the Keplerian angular velocity.Comment: 10 pages including 7 figure
Fast neutral pressure gauges in NSTX
Successful operation in NSTX of two prototype fast-response micro ionization gauges during plasma operations has motivated us to install five gauges at different toroidal and poloidal locations to measure the edge neutral pressure and its dependence on the type of discharge (L-mode, H-mode, CHI) and the fueling method and location. The edge neutral pressure is also used as an input to the transport analysis codes TRANSP and DEGAS-2. The modified PDX-type Penning gauges are well suited for pressure measurements in the NSTX divertor where the toroidal field is relatively high. Behind the NSTX outer divertor plates where the field is lower, an unshielded fast ion gauge of a new design has been installed. This gauge was developed after laboratory testing of several different designs in a vacuum chamber with applied magnetic fields
Statics and dynamics of an Ashkin-Teller neural network with low loading
An Ashkin-Teller neural network, allowing for two types of neurons is
considered in the case of low loading as a function of the strength of the
respective couplings between these neurons. The storage and retrieval of
embedded patterns built from the two types of neurons, with different degrees
of (in)dependence is studied. In particular, thermodynamic properties including
the existence and stability of Mattis states are discussed. Furthermore, the
dynamic behaviour is examined by deriving flow equations for the macroscopic
overlap. It is found that for linked patterns the model shows better retrieval

Variation in the level of aggression, chemical and genetic distance among three supercolonies of the Argentine ant in Europe.
In their invasive ranges, Argentine ant populations often form one geographically vast supercolony, genetically and chemically uniform within which there is no intraspecific aggression. Here we present regional patterns of intraspecific aggression, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) and population genetics of 18 nesting sites across Corsica and the French mainland. Aggression tests confirm the presence of a third European supercolony, the Corsican supercolony, which exhibits moderate to high levels of aggression, depending on nesting sites, with the Main supercolony, and invariably high levels of aggression with the Catalonian supercolony. The chemical analyses corroborated the behavioural data, with workers of the Corsican supercolony showing moderate differences in CHCs compared to workers of the European Main supercolony and strong differences compared to workers of the Catalonian supercolony. Interestingly, there were also clear genetic differences between workers of the Catalonian supercolony and the two other supercolonies at both nuclear and mitochondrial markers, but only very weak genetic differentiation between nesting sites of the Corsican and Main supercolonies (F(ST) = 0.06). A detailed comparison of the genetic composition of supercolonies also revealed that, if one of the last two supercolonies derived from the other, it is the Main supercolony that derived from the Corsican supercolony rather than the reverse. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of conducting more qualitative and quantitative analyses of the level of aggression between supercolonies, which has to be correlated with genetic and chemical data
Review of Methods of Power-Spectrum Analysis as Applied to Super-Kamiokande Solar Neutrino Data
To help understand why different published analyses of the Super-Kamiokande
solar neutrino data arrive at different conclusions, we have applied six
different methods to a standardized problem. The key difference between the
various methods rests in the amount of information that each processes. A
Lomb-Scargle analysis that uses the mid times of the time bins and ignores
experimental error estimates uses the least information. A likelihood analysis
that uses the start times, end times, and mean live times, and takes account of
the experimental error estimates, makes the greatest use of the available
information. We carry out power-spectrum analyses of the Super-Kamiokande 5-day
solar neutrino data, using each method in turn, for a standard search band (0
to 50 yr-1). For each method, we also carry out a fixed number (10,000) of
Monte-Carlo simulations for the purpose of estimating the significance of the
leading peak in each power spectrum. We find that, with one exception, the
results of these calculations are compatible with those of previously published
analyses. (We are unable to replicate Koshio's recent results.) We find that
the significance of the peaks at 9.43 yr-1 and at 43.72 yr-1 increases
progressively as one incorporates more information into the analysis procedure.Comment: 21 pages, 25 figure

We review some major open issues in the current modelling of low and
intermediate mass, main sequence stars based on seismological studies. The
solar case was discussed in a companion paper, here several issues specific to
other stars than the Sun are illustrated with a few stars observed with CoRoT
