Stability window and mass-radius relation for magnetized strange quark stars
The stability of magnetized strange quark matter (MSQM) is investigated
within the phenomenological MIT bag model, taking into account the variation of
the relevant input parameters, namely, the strange quark mass, baryon density,
magnetic field and bag parameter. We obtain that the energy per baryon
decreases as the magnetic field increases, and its minimum value at vanishing
pressure is lower than the value found for SQM. This implies that MSQM is more
stable than non-magnetized SQM. Furthermore, the stability window of MSQM is
found to be wider than the corresponding one of SQM. The mass-radius relation
for magnetized strange quark stars is also derived in this framework.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 3 table
PSR J1856+0245: Arecibo Discovery of a Young, Energetic Pulsar Coincident with the TeV Gamma-ray Source HESS J1857+026
We present the discovery of the Vela-like radio pulsar J1856+0245 in the Arecibo PALFA survey. PSR J1856+0245 has a spin period of 81 ms, a characteristic age of 21 kyr, and a spin-down luminosity Ä = 4.6 Ă 1036 ergs sâ1. It is positionally coincident with the TeV Îł-ray source HESS J1857+026, which has no other known counterparts. Young, energetic pulsars create wind nebulae, and more than a dozen pulsar wind nebulae have been associated with very high energy (100 GeV-100 TeV) Îł-ray sources discovered with the HESS telescope. The Îł-ray emission seen from HESS J1857+026 is potentially produced by a pulsar wind nebula powered by PSR J1856+0245; faint X-ray emission detected by ASCA at the pulsar\u27s position supports this hypothesis. The inferred Îł-ray efficiency is Îł = LÎł/Ä =3.1 % (1-10 TeV, for a distance of 9 kpc), comparable to that observed in similar associations
Callersâ attitudes and experiences of UK breastfeeding helpline support
Background: Breastfeeding peer support, is considered to be a key intervention for increasing breastfeeding duration rates. Whilst a number of national organisations provide telephone based breastfeeding peer support, to date there have been no published evaluations into callersâ experiences and attitudes of this support. In this study we report on the descriptive and qualitative insights provided by 908 callers as part of an evaluation of UK-based breastfeeding helpline(s).
Methods: A structured telephone interview, incorporating Likert scale responses and open-ended questions was undertaken with 908 callers over May to August, 2011 to explore callersâ experiences of the help and support received via the breastfeeding helpline(s).
Results: Overall satisfaction with the helpline was high, with the vast majority of callersâ recalling positive experiences of the help and support received. Thematic analysis was undertaken on all qualitative and descriptive data recorded during the evaluation, contextualised within the main areas addressed within the interview schedule in terms of âcontact with the helplinesâ; âexperiences of the helpline serviceâ, âperceived effectiveness of support provisionâ and âimpact on caller wellbeingâ.
Conclusion: Callers valued the opportunity for accessible, targeted, non-judgmental and convenient support. Whilst the telephone support did not necessarily influence womenâs breastfeeding decisions, the support they received left them feeling reassured, confident and more determined to continue breastfeeding. We recommend extending the helpline service to ensure support can be accessed when needed, and ongoing training and support for volunteers. Further advertising and promotion of the service within wider demographic groups is warranted
The effects of PTSD treatment during pregnancy: systematic review and case study
Background: PTSD in pregnant women is associated with adverse outcomes for mothers and their children. It is unknown whether pregnant women with PTSD, or symptoms of
PTSD, can receive targeted treatment that is safe and effective.
Objective: The purpose of the present paper was to assess the effectiveness and safety of treatment for (symptoms of) PTSD in pregnant women.
Method: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines in Pubmed, Embase, PsychINFO, and Cochrane. In addition, a case is presented of a pregnant woman with PTSD who received eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy aimed at processing the memories of a previous distressing childbirth.
Results: In total, 13 studies were included, involving eight types of interventions (i.e. trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure therapy, EMDR therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, explorative therapy, self-hypnosis and relaxation, Survivor Moms
Companion, and Seeking Safety Intervention). In three studies, the traumatic event pertained to a previous childbirth. Five studies reported obstetrical outcomes. After requesting additional information, authors of five studies indicated an absence of serious adverse
events. PTSD symptoms improved in 10 studies. However, most studies carried a high risk of bias. In our case study, a pregnant woman with a PTSD diagnosis based on DSM-5 no longer fulfilled the criteria of PTSD after three sessions of EMDR therapy. She had an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery.
Conclusion: Despite the fact that case studies as the one presented here report no adverse events, and treatment is likely safe, due to the poor methodological quality of most studies it is impossible to allow inferences on the effects of any particular treatment of PTSD (symptoms) during pregnancy. Yet, given the elevated maternal stress and cortisol levels in pregnant women with PTSD, and the fact that so far no adverse effects on the unborn child have been reported associated with the application of trauma-focused therapy, treatment of PTSD during pregnancy is most likely safe
Exploring what lies behind public preferences for avoiding health losses caused by lapses in healthcare safety and patient lifestyle choices

We conducted an on-line person trade-off (PTO) study (N=1030) to investigate whether the public attach a premium to the avoidance of ill health associated with alternative types of responsibilities: lapses in healthcare safety, those caused by individual action or lifestyle choice; or genetic conditions. We found that the public gave higher priority to prevention of harm in a hospital setting such as preventing hospital associated infections than genetic disorder but drug administration errors were valued similar to genetic disorders. Prevention of staff injuries, lifestyle diseases and sports injuries, were given lower priority. In this paper we aim to understand the reasoning behind the responses by analysing comments provided by respondents to the PTO questions. Method: A majority of the respondents who participated in the survey provided brief comments explaining preferences in free text responses following PTO questions. This qualitative data was transformed into explicit codes conveying similar meanings. An overall coding framework was developed and a reliability test was carried out. Recurrent patterns were identified in each preference group. Comments which challenged the assumptions of hypothetical scenarios were also investigated. Results: NHS causation of illness and a duty of care were the most cited reasons to prioritise lapses in healthcare safety. Personal responsibility dominated responses for lifestyle related contexts, and many respondents mentioned that health loss was the result of the individualâs choice to engage in risky behaviour. A small proportion of responses questioned the assumptions underlying the PTO questions. However excluding these from the main analysis did not affect the conclusions.
Conclusion: Although some responses indicated misunderstanding or rejection of assumptions we put forward, the results were still robust. The reasons put forward for responses differed between comparisons but responsibility was the most frequently cited. Most preference elicitation studies only focus on eliciting numerical valuations but allowing for qualitative data can augment understanding of preferences as well as verifying results.EPSRC through the MATCH programme(EP/F063822/1 and EP/G012393/1) and HERG within Brunel University
Profile instabilities of the millisecond pulsar PSR J1022+1001
We present evidence that the integrated profiles of some millisecond pulsars
exhibit severe changes that are inconsistent with the moding phenomenon as
known from slowly rotating pulsars. We study these profile instabilities in
particular for PSR J1022+1001 and show that they occur smoothly, exhibiting
longer time constants than those associated with moding. In addition, the
profile changes of this pulsar seem to be associated with a relatively
narrow-band variation of the pulse shape. Only parts of the integrated profile
participate in this process which suggests that the origin of this phenomenon
is intrinsic to the pulsar magnetosphere and unrelated to the interstellar
medium. A polarization study rules out profile changes due to geometrical
effects produced by any sort of precession. However, changes are observed in
the circularly polarized radiation component. In total we identify four
recycled pulsars which also exhibit instabilities in the total power or
polarization profiles due to an unknown phenomenon (PSRs J1022+1001,
J1730-2304, B1821-24, J2145-0750).
The consequences for high precision pulsar timing are discussed in view of
the standard assumption that the integrated profiles of millisecond pulsars are
stable. As a result we present a new method to determine pulse times-of-arrival
that involves an adjustment of relative component amplitudes of the template
profile. Applying this method to PSR J1022+1001, we obtain an improved timing
solution with a proper motion measurement of -17 \pm 2 mas/yr in ecliptic
longitude. Assuming a distance to the pulsar as inferred from the dispersion

EQ-5D in skin conditions: an assessment of validity and responsiveness
Aims and objectives This systematic literature review aims to assess the reliability, validity and responsiveness of three widely used generic preference-based measures of health-related quality of life (HRQL), i.e., EQ-5D, Health Utility Index 3 (HUI3) and SF-6D in patients with skin conditions. Methods A systematic search was conducted to identify studies reporting health state utility values obtained using EQ-5D, SF-6D, or HUI3 alongside other HRQL measures or clinical indices for patients with skin conditions. Data on test-retest analysis for reliability, known group differences or correlation and regression analyses for validity, and change over time or responsiveness indices analysis were extracted and reviewed. Results A total of 16 papers reporting EQ-5D utilities in people with skin conditions were included in the final review. No papers for SF-6D and HUI3 were found. Evidence of reliability was not found for any of these measures. The majority of studies included in the review (12 out of 16) examined patients with plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis and the remaining four studies examined patients with either acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, hand eczema, or venous leg ulcers. The findings were generally positive in terms of performance of EQ-5D. Six studies showed that EQ-5D was able to reflect differences between severity groups and only one reported differences that were not statistically significant. Four studies found that EQ-5D detected differences between patients and the general population, and differences were statistically different for three of them. Further, moderate-to-strong correlation coefficients were found between EQ-5D and other skin-specific HRQL measures in four studies. Eight studies showed that EQ-5D was able to detect change in HRQL appropriately over time and the changes were statistically significant in seven studies. Conclusions Overall, the validity and responsiveness of the EQ-5D was found to be good in people with skin diseases, especially plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. No evidence on SF-6D and HUI3 was available to enable any judgments to be made on their performance
Twin Binaries: Studies of Stability, Mass Transfer, and Coalescence
Motivated by suggestions that binaries with almost equal-mass components
("twins") play an important role in the formation of double neutron stars and
may be rather abundant among binaries, we study the stability of synchronized
close and contact binaries with identical components in circular orbits. In
particular, we investigate the dependency of the innermost stable circular
orbit on the core mass, and we study the coalescence of the binary that occurs
at smaller separations. For twin binaries composed of convective main-sequence
stars, subgiants, or giants with low mass cores (M_c <~0.15M, where M is the
mass of a component), a secular instability is reached during the contact
phase, accompanied by a dynamical mass transfer instability at the same or at a
slightly smaller orbital separation. Binaries that come inside this instability
limit transfer mass gradually from one component to the other and then coalesce
quickly as mass is lost through the outer Lagrangian points. For twin giant
binaries with moderate to massive cores (M_c >~0.15M), we find that stable
contact configurations exist at all separations down to the Roche limit, when
mass shedding through the outer Lagrangian points triggers a coalescence of the
envelopes and leaves the cores orbiting in a central tight binary. In addition
to the formation of binary neutron stars, we also discuss the implications of
our results for the production of planetary nebulae with double degenerate

How strange are compact star interiors ?
We discuss a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type quantum field theoretical
approach to the quark matter equation of state with color superconductivity and
construct hybrid star models on this basis. It has recently been demonstrated
that with increasing baryon density, the different quark flavors may occur
sequentially, starting with down-quarks only, before the second light quark
flavor and at highest densities also the strange quark flavor appears. We find
that color superconducting phases are favorable over non-superconducting ones
which entails consequences for thermodynamic and transport properties of hybrid
star matter. In particular, for NJL-type models no strange quark matter phases
can occur in compact star interiors due to mechanical instability against
gravitational collapse, unless a sufficiently strong flavor mixing as provided
by the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant interaction is present in the
model. We discuss observational data on mass-radius relationships of compact
stars which can put constraints on the properties of dense matter equation of
