Filipino provincial youth’s consumption of K-pop and its effects
Korean Wave or Hallyu is the popularization of the South Korean culture all over the world. Through the use of Cultural Proximity, and Uses and Gratification Theories as guide, this research was able to understand the reasons of Filipino provincial youth’s consumption of K-pop music, video, and merchandise, and its subsequent effects to their cultural capital, values, and linguistic, and artistic choices. The data from the self-report of 300 Ilokano 3rd and 4th generation K-pop fans, aged 18 to 30 years old was analyzed using correlation analysis. The respondents are mainly Gen Zs, 3rd generation K-pop fans, and females. The top three (3) most popular stans are Blackpink, BTS, and Twice. The findings show their active consumption of Korean popular music, videos and merchandise. Further, varying degrees to which the respondents cite the following reasons as justification of their K-pop consumption are recorded: for entertainment, establishment and reinforcement of social relationships, and personal identity, and surveillance of the characteristics and trends of the South Korean culture. Reasons for music consumption registered a positive significant relationship with cultural capital, negative significant relationship with values and aesthetic, and no relationship with linguistic. All components of effect documented direct relationship will all of the reasons for K-pop video consumption, except values and diversion with no significant relationship at all. Reasons for merchandise consumption have a positive significant relationship with cultural capital, and the linguistic, and aesthetic effects. This study forwards the importance of both traditional and new media in fostering intercultural communication and globalizatio
Modeling a bacterial ecosystem through chemotaxis simulation of a single cell
International audienceWe present in this paper an artificial life ecosystem in which bacteria are evolved to perform chemotaxis. In this system, surviving bacteria have to overcome the problems of detecting resources (or sensing the environment), modulating their motion to generate a foraging behavior, and communicating with their kin to produce more sophisticated behaviors. A cell’s chemotactic pathway is modulated by a hybrid approach that uses an algebraic model for the receptor clusters activity, an ordinary differential equation for the adaptation dynamics, and a metabolic model that converts nutrients into biomass. The results show some analysis of the motion obtained from some bacteria and their effects on the evolved population behavior. The evolutionary process improves the bacteria’s ability to react to their environment, enhancing their growth and allowing them to better survive. As future work, we propose to investigate the effect of emergent bacterial communication as new species arise, and to explore the dynamics of colonies
CRISPR-assisted detection of RNA-protein interactions in living cells.
We have developed CRISPR-assisted RNA-protein interaction detection method (CARPID), which leverages CRISPR-CasRx-based RNA targeting and proximity labeling to identify binding proteins of specific long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the native cellular context. We applied CARPID to the nuclear lncRNA XIST, and it captured a list of known interacting proteins and multiple previously uncharacterized binding proteins. We generalized CARPID to explore binders of the lncRNAs DANCR and MALAT1, revealing the method's wide applicability in identifying RNA-binding proteins
Derivation of Continuous Linear Multistep Methods Using Hermite Polynomials as Basis Functions
Abstract This paper concerns the derivation of continuous linear multistep methods for solving first-order initial value problems (IVPs) of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with step number = 3 using Hermite polynomials as basis functions. Adams-Bashforth, Adams-Moulton and optimal order methods are derived through collocation and interpolation technique. The derived methods are applied to solve two first order initial value problems of ordinary differential equations. The result obtained by the optimal order method compared favourably with those of the standard existing methods of Adams-Bashforth and Adams-Moulton
Agent behaviour modeling using personality profile characterization for emergency evacuation serious games
This chapter presents a current effort to model agent-personality using personality profile data extracted from individuals in the population. The obtained profiles are then used in a personality-driven behaviour engine to create realistic scenarios where massive evacuations can be simulated to promote awareness of the risks and emergency procedures in said scenarios. ALFIL: A crowd simulation serious game for massive evacuation training and awareness
This article presents the current development of a serious game for the simulation of massive evacuations. The purpose of this project is to promote self-protection through awareness of the procedures and different possible scenarios during the evacuation of a massive event. Sophisticated behaviors require massive computational power and it has been necessary to implement several distributed programming techniques to simulate crowds of thousands of people. Even with the current state of computer hardware, the costs of building and operating this hardware is still prohibitive; so, it's preferred to apply distributed programming techniques running on specialized parallel computing hardware.
