Commercialization of Traditional Knowledge Based Technologies by Small Entrepreneurs: An Exploration of Strategic and Policy Options
The paper is based on the case study of an entrepreneur who has invested his career in developing a new product based on traditional knowledge. Using this case we highlight the issues faced by a small entrepreneur in the commercialization of traditional knowledge based technologies in pharmaceuticals industry. The framework developed by Teece is used to analyze the strategic options available to the entrepreneur in a weak appropriability regime. We also analyze a hypothetical scenario of strategic options available to the entrepreneur if the appropriability regime was strong. Since traditional knowledge based entrepreneurial activities have significant scope in India, it is important to explore the policy and strategic options that are available to us. In the context of the case study, the concluding part of the paper reviews these options and the associated implications for the holders of traditional knowledge.
Preparing Generic Spiral Structure using Optimized Design Parameters
In this paper, frequency reconfigurable spiral patch antenna is designed. Frequency reconfiguration is achieved by changing the electrical length of antenna with the help of PIN diode switch. Design parameters of spiral antenna are optimized to get improved results. After that, a generic spiral structure is designed using these optimized values. This will reduce complexity and simulation time. Now, there is no need to redesign spiral structure for different values of design parameters. Just have to put values of parameter in their respective variable and this generic structure will be converted to desired structure. This will reduce design complexity and simulation time
Anaemia in acute coronary syndrome patients: a study from rural tertiary care centre of India
Background: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are an imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand, and the presence of anaemia further potentiates this imbalance. The burden of anaemia in patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is significant. Anaemia has the potential to worsen myocardial ischemic insult by decreasing the oxygen content of the blood supplied to the jeopardized myocardium. Methods: A total of 148 patients with ACS were recruited in the study from October 2016 to December 2017 in Medicine and Cardiology Department of UPUMS Saifai, India. All patients were subjected to a detailed history and thorough clinical examination and investigations after obtaining informed consent. Patient having any other diseases known to cause anaemia were excluded. Results: Mean age of patients was 58.5 years. 72.97% were vegetarian and 27.03% were non-vegetarian. Most common morphological type of anaemia was dimorphic anaemia followed by macrocytic and microcytic hypochromic respectively. Iron deficiency anaemia was most common type of anaemia followed by vitamin B12 deficiency and mixed (Iron and vitamin B12 deficiency). 45.28% anaemic patients had no symptoms of blood loss. Most common symptom of blood loss was bleeding per rectum followed by malena. Severity of acute coronary syndrome was more in subjects having anaemia which was evident by higher incidence of anaemia in subjects having ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The incidence of anaemia was low in case of Non ST elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) and Unstable angina (UA). The results of the present study have been compared to those from India. Conclusions: Higher incidence of anaemia was reported in subjects having acute coronary syndrome. Incidence of anaemia in STEMI patients was greater than NSTEMI and unstable angina patients. Severe form of acute coronary syndrome i.e. STEMI was associated with higher incidence of anaemia.
Productivity, profitability and water use efficiency of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under different customized fertilizers and moisture regimes
A field experiment was conduct during the winter (rabi) season of 2010-2011 on silty loam soil at Faizabad (Uttar Pradesh), India to develop suitable dose of customized fertilizers (CF) and moisture regime for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop. Productivity of grain and straw of wheat increased with increasing level of nutrient. Highest grain yield (53.13 q ha-1) was recorded under the application of CF 12 : 30 : 16 : 0.5 : 0 : 5 (NPK 150 : 75 : 40) which was accounted increases of 18.22%, 14.55% and 10.88% more yield than F1, F4 and F6 treatment respectively. Highest water use efficiency was recorded with 6 cm irrigation at 0.8 IW/CPE ratio and customize fertilizer 12: 30: 16: 0.5: 0: 5(NPK 150: 75: 40). The highest net returns (Rs. 61324 ha-1) and B:C (2.29) were recorded under the treatment combination of 1.0 IW/CPE ratio + customize fertilizer 12: 30: 16: 0.5: 0: 5 (NPK 150: 75: 40). The increased dose of fertilization in the form of CF with proper irrigation scheduling in wheat has a high scope for the maximization of yield as well as profitability in wheat growing regions of Uttar Pradesh

We report a multiwavelength (X-ray, ultraviolet/optical/infrared, radio)
analysis of the relativistic tidal disruption event candidate Sw J2058+05 from
3 months to 3 yr post-discovery in order to study its properties and compare
its behavior with that of Sw J1644+57. Our main results are as follows. (1) The
long-term X-ray light curve of Sw J2058+05 shows a remarkably similar trend to
that of Sw J1644+57. After a prolonged power-law decay, the X-ray flux drops
off rapidly by a factor of within a span of /
0.95. Associating this sudden decline with the transition from super-Eddington
to sub-Eddington accretion, we estimate the black hole mass to be in the range
of M. (2) We detect rapid ( s) X-ray
variability before the dropoff, suggesting that, even at late times, the X-rays
originate from close to the black hole (ruling out a forward-shock origin). (3)
We confirm using HST and VLBA astrometry that the location of the source
coincides with the galaxy's center to within pc (in projection).
(4) We modeled Sw J2058+05's ultraviolet/optical/infrared spectral energy
distribution with a single-temperature blackbody and find that while the radius
remains more or less constant at a value of AU (
cm) at all times during the outburst, the blackbody temperature drops
significantly from 30,000 K at early times to a value of 15,000 K
at late times (before the X-ray dropoff). Our results strengthen Sw J2058+05's
interpretation as a tidal disruption event similar to Sw J1644+57.Comment: Replaced with the published version of the manuscrip
Demography of fan-throated lizard, Sitana ponticeriana (Cuvier) in a cotton field in Dharwad district of Karnataka state, India
The demographic studies on Sitana ponticeriana show that the species is abundant in Gabbur village. The lizards exhibited a diurnal variation in their activity pattern (basking, foraging, seeking refuge, etc.). They were active in the morning hours when air temperature was ≤ 33° C and census yielded maximum numbers (45 ± 2.19 in 18,748 sq m or ~ 1.9 ha area). The study provides a pilot index as well as a reliable and accurate methodology for population survey of the lizard. The pilot index is essential for any large scale monitoring project and population trend analysis in future
Application of phase change materials in solar water heating systems for thermal energy storage
One of the major drawbacks of solar water heating systems is unable to supply hot water during night time or off sunshine hours. The integration of phase change material with solar water heating systems is cost effective and efficient solution to overcome this major problem associated with solar water heating systems. The phase change material integrated with solar water heating system stores thermal energy during sun shine hours and this stored energy can be recovered during off shine hours or night time to produce hot water. The phase change material can be integrated with water tank of collector, evacuated tubes, external water tank for solar collector and flat plate collector by adding layers at the bottom of absorber plate. The integration of phase change material with SWH system not only overcome the drawbacks of SWH system but also enhance the efficiency of conventional SWH system. Many investigations for the application of TES materials integrated SWH system have been carried out and found a significant enhancement in the performance. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent advances in the applications of PCM with SWH system for TE
A novel prostate cell type-specific gene signature to interrogate prostate tumor differentiation status and monitor therapeutic response (running title: Phenotypic classification of prostate tumors)
In this study, we extracted prostate cell-specific gene sets (metagenes) to define the epithelial differentiation status of prostate cancers and, using a deconvolution-based strategy, interrogated thousands of primary and metastatic tumors in public gene profiling datasets. We identified a subgroup of primary prostate tumors with low luminal epithelial enrichment (LumElow). LumElow tumors were associated with higher Gleason score and mutational burden, reduced relapse-free and overall survival, and were more likely to progress to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Using discriminant function analysis, we generate a predictive 10-gene classifier for clinical implementation. This mini-classifier predicted with high accuracy the luminal status in both primary tumors and CRPCs. Immunohistochemistry for COL4A1, a low- luminal marker, sustained the association of attenuated luminal phenotype with metastatic disease. We found also an association of LumE score with tumor phenotype in genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) of prostate cancer. Notably, the metagene approach led to the discovery of drugs that could revert the low luminal status in prostate cell lines and mouse models. This study describes a novel tool to dissect the intrinsic heterogeneity of prostate tumors and provide predictive information on clinical outcome and treatment response in experimental and clinical samples
Agri-food business: Global challenges â Innovative solutions
The rise of a western-style middle class in many successful emerging economies like China currently is inducing deep structural changes on agricultural world markets and within the global agri-food business. As a result of both higher incomes and concerns over product safety and quality the global demand for high-quality and safe food products is increasing significantly. In order to meet the new required quality, globally minimum quality standards are rising and private standards emerging. All over the world these developments cause adjustments at the enterprise, chain and market levels. At the same time, the tremendously increasing demand for renewable energy has led to the emergence of a highly promising market for biomass production. This has far-reaching consequences for resource allocation in the agri-food business, for the environment, for the poor in developing countries and for agricultural policy reforms. The challenges increase with ongoing liberalisation, globalisation and standardisation, all of which change trade patterns for agricultural and food commodities, and influence production costs and commodity prices. The objective of the IAMO Forum is to show opportunities as well as risks for all participants of the food economy in the ongoing globalisation process: for small peasants in developing countries, farmers in Europe and globally active food enterprises and retailers. The success of enterprises depends on the ability to find innovative solutions with regard to the organisation of enterprises, chains, and markets, as well as future policy design. Concerning bio-energy strategies has to be identified to combat global warming most efficiently and concurrently attenuate the competition between "tank and table" on farmland. IAMO Forum 2008, as well as this book, would not have been possible without the engagement of many people and institutions. We thank the authors of the papers, as well as the referees. Furthermore we are highly indebted to MARLIES LOHR, NADINE GIEMSA and RONNY RECKE who in an outstanding way contributed to the organisation of the Forum. This is true as well for the IAMO administration, whose work we gratefully acknowledge. Many sponsors has funded the IAMO Forum 2008.
