Giant Electron-hole Charging Energy Asymmetry in Ultra-short Carbon Nanotubes
Making full usage of bipolar transport in single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT)
transistors could permit the development of two-in-one quantum devices with
ultra-short channels. We report on clean 10 to 100 nm long suspended
SWCNT transistors which display a large electron-hole transport asymmetry. The
devices consist of naked SWCNT channels contacted with sections of
SWCNT-under-annealed-gold. The annealed gold acts as an n-doping top gate which
creates nm-sharp barriers at the junctions between the contacts and naked
channel. These tunnel barriers define a single quantum dot (QD) whose charging
energies to add an electron or a hole are vastly different ( charging
energy asymmetry). We parameterize the transport asymmetry by the ratio
of the hole and electron charging energies . We show that this
asymmetry is maximized for short channels and small band gap SWCNTs. In a small
band gap SWCNT device, we demonstrate the fabrication of a two-in-one quantum
device acting as a QD for holes, and a much longer quantum bus for electrons.
In a 14 nm long channel, reaches up to 2.6 for a device with a
band gap of 270 meV. This strong transport asymmetry survives even at
room temperature
Structural and electrical characterization of hybrid metal-polypyrrole nanowires
We present here the synthesis and structural characterization of hybrid
Au-polypyrrole-Au and Pt- polypyrrole-Au nanowires together with a study of
their electrical properties from room-temperature down to very low temperature.
A careful characterization of the metal-polymer interfaces by trans- mission
electron microscopy revealed that the structure and mechanical strength of
bottom and upper interfaces are very different. Variable temperature electrical
transport measurements were performed on both multiple nanowires - contained
within the polycarbonate template - and single nanowires. Our data show that
the three-dimensional Mott variable-range-hopping model provides a complete
framework for the understanding of transport in PPy nanowires, including
non-linear current-voltage characteristics and magnetotransport at low
temperatures.Comment: Phys. Rev. B Vol. 76 Issue 11 (2007
Constraining ^(26)Al+p resonances using ^(26)Al(^3He,d)^(27)Si
The ^(26)Al(^3He,d)^(27)Si reaction was measured from 0°≤θ_(c.m.)≤35° at E(^3He)=20 MeV using a quadrupole-dipole-dipole-dipole magnetic spectrometer. States in ^(27)Si were observed above the background at 7652 and 7741 keV and upper limits were set for the state at 7592 keV. Implications for the ^(26)Al(p,γ)^(27)Si stellar reaction rate are discussed
Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Multiaddressable Indolinooxazolidine Derivatives: Joint Computational and Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering Investigations
The linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of two indolinooxazolidine derivatives acting as multiaddressable switches are reported. The second-order hyperpolarizability contrasts upon commutation between their closed and open forms are characterized using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements, and rationalized by means of density functional theory and post Hartree–Fock ab initio calculations. It is evidenced that the addition of a withdrawing substituent on the indolinic subunit leads to a more effective photoinduced charge transfer while decreasing the transition energy of the S0 → S1 transition, which induces a significant enhancement of the HRS response of the open form. This substitution is however detrimental to the NLO contrast, due to the concomitant increase of the HRS response of the closed form
First direct mass-measurement of the two-neutron halo nucleus 6He and improved mass for the four-neutron halo 8He
The first direct mass-measurement of He has been performed with the
TITAN Penning trap mass spectrometer at the ISAC facility. In addition, the
mass of He was determined with improved precision over our previous
measurement. The obtained masses are (He) = 6.018 885 883(57) u and
(He) = 8.033 934 44(11) u. The He value shows a deviation from
the literature of 4. With these new mass values and the previously
measured atomic isotope shifts we obtain charge radii of 2.060(8) fm and
1.959(16) fm for He and He respectively. We present a detailed
comparison to nuclear theory for He, including new hyperspherical harmonics
results. A correlation plot of the point-proton radius with the two-neutron
separation energy demonstrates clearly the importance of three-nucleon forces.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Structured evaluation of virtual environments for special-needs education
This paper describes the development of a structured approach to evaluate experiential and communication virtual learning environments (VLEs) designed specifically for use in the education of children with severe learning difficulties at the Shepherd special needs school in Nottingham, UK. Constructivist learning theory was used as a basis for the production of an evaluation framework, used to evaluate the design of three VLEs and how they were used by students with respect to this learning theory. From an observational field study of student-teacher pairs using the VLEs, 18 behaviour categories were identified as relevant to five of the seven constructivist principles defined by Jonassen (1994). Analysis of student-teacher behaviour was used to provide support for, or against, the constructivist principles. The results show that the three VLEs meet the constructivist principles in very different ways and recommendations for design modifications are put forward
