The Desert is Alive – Engagement in Aging Districts of Single-Family Housing

In the discourse surrounding the prospects of districts of single-family housing built between the 1950s to the 1970s1, their assumed perspectives range from dramatic vacancy scenarios all the way to successful self-regulation of the market. A uniform trend is not recognizable in one direction or in the other. It is clear, however, that not all neighborhoods from this period will be able to accomplish a problem-free change of generations and that upheavals and therefore also new challenges will present themselves in the structure and composition of the neighborhoods. At the same time, these upheavals also bring along chances that especially arise from the residents of single-family housing neighborhoods. The present article draws on this point and, by focusing on civil engagement in these areas, aims to initiate a change of perspectives and illustrate approaches to developing these aging districts into sustainable neighborhoods. This article was preceded by a study that specifically dealt with the involvement of residents in aging single-family housing districts which the authors compiled by order of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia’s initiative “StadtBauKultur NRW 2020”

Lipogranuloma of the cervix in a postmenopausal patient with a uterine prolapse

Objective: Lipogranuloma is a rare inflammatory reactive process related to exogenous or endogenous lipids with an admission to the dermis and subcutis. It is described most frequently in the penis and scrotum of young adults. Lipogranuloma of the female genitalia is a rather uncommon condition. The lesion is histopathologically characterized by fat vacuoles with foreign body type giant cells and scattered lymphocytes. Case: We described an incidental lipogranuloma of the cervix in a 60-year-old woman who presented with total uterine prolapse. Conclusion: Although lipogranuloma mostly occurs in young male patients, especially in the genital tract, clinicians should be aware of this entity in the cervix of a postmenopausal woman with uterine prolapse, which may challenge the differential clinical diagnosis. © 2007 Springer-Verlag

Revierparks as an integrated green network in Germany: An option for Amman?

    No full text
Amman city has gone through differentiated patterns and trends of sprawl in the last few decades. It went through disorganized developments due to reasons that vary from political, geopolitical, socio-economic and others. A threat that is existent in this perspective is the sprawl of cities and urban structures and the merging of them with no respect for the cultural and social needs of the community. Development of the city of Amman should take the shape of integrated planning that contributes to sustainable development. Taking into consideration the geographic layout of Amman and the tendencies of sprawl to overrun the green areas, the focus of the paper is directed towards the fringes of Amman and the seemingly available spaces of potential. A strategic approach for an open spaces network that allows for dynamic lifestyles in Amman is suggested. It should encompass a variety of safe and attractive spaces that are well distributed throughout neighbourhoods and accessible to the communities. Success factors of the Revierparks in the Ruhr area of Germany are researched in order to highlight potential strategic thinking in dealing with problems in Amman. Accordingly, defined magnets and anchor nodes in Amman are specified make the city more readable and accessible
