This work is an investigation of selected songs that are rendered in informal situations for entertainment purpose. The situations selected in this work include: drinking centres, the market, wedding ceremonies after the important guests have left, playing grounds as well as in the farms. Data for the study were collected in one of the Jukun villages- Bete in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State through interaction with the people where the songs were recorded using the handset. The researcher also used his knowledge of the songs as a member of the community. The result of the research indicates that while some of the songs are bastardized form of church songs with different wordings, some centre on individuals and certain happenings in the past. It has been equally observed that although the songs have different themes such as eulogising certain brand of alcoholic drinks, abuse and condemnation of certain acts and persons in the society, within the context in which they are rendered, they are purely for entertainment. Comparing first-generation and continuing-generation college students\u27 self-efficacy, campus involvement, and academic performance

    Get PDF
In order to highlight potential differences between first-generation college students (FGS), defined as neither parent having completed a Bachelor’s degree, and continuing-generation students (CGS), this study compares FGS and CGS in terms of self-efficacy, campus involvement, and academic performance measured by grade point average (GPA) during their first year at a university. In order to investigate these relationships, this study utilizes University of Northern Iowa (UNI)’s 2015-2016 Mapworks data. Mapworks is a voluntary survey that first-year students, including freshmen and transfer students, complete during the fall and spring semesters. A total of 1549 first-year students participated in the 2015-16 survey, and 646 self-identified as FGS while 903 self-identified as CGS. This study used t-tests to compare FGS and CGS in terms of their responses to the self-efficacy and campus involvement Mapworks questions as well as their official GPAs in the fall and spring semesters. Results showed there is a statistically significant difference between FGS and CGS in terms of students’ expected GPA, intent to be involved in a student organization, fall GPA, and spring GPA

A semantic approach to the culinary terms of Jukun and English

    Get PDF
This work examines the cooking terms of the Jukun and English languages. Data for the study were obtained through both primary and secondary sources. The result of the analysis of the data indicates that at the surface level, there seems to be differences in the way the two languages perceive, view and use the various cooking terms. This is because some of the terms present in English appear to be absent in the Jukun language. However, there is a unique feature of cooking terms across the two languages because both their semantic and syntactic analyses complement each other. For instance, the terms ‘cook and bake’ are the most general verbs in the field and the freest syntactically because they exhibit an ‘ergative’ feature. Furthermore, in the two languages, the cooking verbs could feature both transitively as well as intransitively. Whenever they appear intransitively, the subject of the construction belongs to the same class of noun phrases as the object of the transitive construction. Based on the above, the study concludes that cooking terms have certain universal applications

Dietary Supplementation with Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) on Production, Health and Culling Parameters in Transitioning Holstein Cows

    Get PDF
Lactating Holstein cows were assigned to one of three dietary CLA treatments. Study objectives were to determine the effects of a protected (lipid-encapsulated tran-10, cis- 12) CLA on milk production, health and culling frequency, reproduction and overall feasibility in large commercial dairy operations. Results indicate that CLA is capable of inducing milk fat depression (MFD) within 15 d following parturition and the reduced milk energy output likely indicates an improved energetic status. However, feeding CLA had no effect on other productions, metabolic, health, or culling variables

ENGLISH : Morphology is a branch of linguistics which concerns on the structure of words. One of the study field of morphology is morphological process. This is the process of word formation by connecting one morpheme to other morphemes. Then, this paper discusses the morphological process of superlative adjective in English and Sundanese. For this reason, the superlative adjective both in English and in Sundanese has a unique pattern to be analyzed. There are many differences of superlative adjective between English and Sundanese based on the morphological process theory such as superlative adjective in English uses only suffix –est for one-syllable adjectives and some two-syllable adjectives which is ended by –y, -er, -le, and –ow, but in Sundanese use prefix and suffix pang—na, then the process of reduplication is only found in Sundanese. Furthermore, the rule of regular and irregular superlative adjective is only applied by English not for Sundanese. However, the similarities of superlative adjective in English and Sundanese are extremely slight. Its similarity can be found through the process of inflectional affixes, although exactly they have the different structure

Effects of Heat Stress and Plane of Nutrition on Production and Metabolism in Growing Pigs

    Get PDF
We heat-stressed growing pigs and evaluated the differential effects of environmental hyperthermia and reduced feed intake. Our results indicate that hyperthermia directly effects production and metabolism and many of these are independent of reduced nutrient intake. Identifying how and why heat stress alters metabolism and physiology are prerequisites in developing ameliorating strategies to prevent the reduction in performance and lost income typically observed during the warm summer months

Corn planting decisions: What’s changed and what’s the same?

Corn planting is arguably the most important field operation. Wide sweeping decisions from hybrid selection, row spacing, and seeding rates to planter adjustments, seed depth, and field conditions all come together the day planting occurs. It is a perfect storm where all these decisions align to achieve ideal stand establishment and set the stage for high yield potential
