Determining Gender Stereotype based on Physical Appearance Expectations in Interpersonal Communication Process: An Intercultural Comparison between Turkey and Portugal

    No full text
While making inferences about the physical appearance of other persons, the individual makes use of various stereotypes, and according to these stereotypes, categorizes the new individual based on his/her physical appearance. This affects the interpersonal communication process established, and the individual starts and maintains the communication process according to the stereotypes about other persons categorised in the mind. In this regard, it can be suggested that gender stereotypes, which are based on the physical appearance of the individual, are determinant on the content and quality of interpersonal communication. In this context, determining these stereotype-based expectations is of great importance also for reducing communication barriers encountered in interpersonal communication. Based on this focus, the research aims to reveal the physical appearance features of the other person, which the individual pays attention to most, at the start of and during the interpersonal communication process, and whether this attitude differs according to the gender of the evaluating or evaluated individual. Conducted in accordance with this aim, the study is a descriptive method-based field research implemented by means of open-ended question form. The study also aims to present an intercultural perspective; within this scope, findings obtained from the statements of Turkish and Portugese respondents are provided in a comparative manner. The primary result of the study is the fact that both physical appearance features, which the individual first evaluates in the moment of first meeting and during the interpersonal communication process, differ according to the gender and cultural background of the evaluating individual

DEFINING THE STAKEHOLDERS' PRIORITIES THROUGH THE CONTENT OF PRESS RELEASES

    No full text
tuThe common usage of social media has increased the need for foundations to inform their stakeholders about their activities. One of the most important channels that institutions transmit information is the press room in the corporate websites because institutions can transmit information to their stakeholders about themselves through the press rooms. In addition, institutions have the opportunity to determine stakeholders that they are going to address first and which stakeholders' expectations they are going to meet by producing new content. The research has a significant place in determining which stakeholders' needs will be satisfied primarily through press rooms in the corporate websites. This research is based on a field research method by categorically analyzing the content of the press releases in the corporate websites of the first 25 institutions in the Fortune Turkey 500 list. As a result of this research it is found that institutions mostly publish their press releases in order to meet surrounding community members' needs; the press releases are mostly focused on the activities which are adopted to carry out community services and the difference among the stakeholders who are addressed is emphasized

MEN'S EVALUATION OF "HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY" ROLES IN TURKISH TELEVISION ADVERTISEMENTS PORTRAYING MEN

Television advertisements are one of the most important areas in which gender roles that are considered 'suitable' for women and men provide a continuation of gender relations. In addition to problematic representations of women in television advertisements, it is possible to see gender roles of men, whose characters are reflected in a way that reinforces gender relations. Considering the current scholarly opinions on this matter, we describe the dominant role of men by the concept of "hegemonic masculinity". Conceptualisation of "hegemonic masculinity" represents the dominance of men within gender relations over both women and 'other' men. From this point of view, the study aims to reveal opinions of males about hegemonic masculinity representations included in advertisements and their views on the reality of this problematic representation. In this context, first of all we reflect on Connell's conceptualisation of "hegemonic masculinity" and thus we refer to the forms of representation of hegemonic masculinity roles used in television advertisements. After that, we present results of in-depth interviews, conducted via semi-structured interview scheme with 20 men, regarding the roles of "hegemonic masculinity" in television advertisements. The research reveals the opinions of men who are from different educational backgrounds, of different ages and professions. Pointing out the results of the empirical study, we determine that male television viewers in Turkey are aware of the fact that men are featured in advertisements mostly through their bodies; the role of women is shown in terms of domestic relations. Men do not have to make decisions on domestic matters, women are preferred in relation to purchasing decisions, and roles of women are more effective in emotional relations. Moreover, the results suggest that in Turkish television advertisements, group relations between men are not based on hierarchy

Radiology plays an important role in the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Besides its role in the diagnosis and follow-up of COVID-19, it undertakes important tasks both in the protection of healthcare workers and in avoiding a potential cause of spread. The aim of the present study is to share our experience and approach during the pandemic and to contribute to the management of other probable pandemic processes.WOS:00058856330001

Improvement of fuel properties of biodiesel with bioadditive ethyl levulinate

    No full text
Biodiesel has poor cold flow properties due to their high saturated fatty acid content. Ethyl levulinate is used as bio-based cold flow improver additive in biodiesel. In this work, both ethyl levulinate and biodiesel were synthesized in the laboratory. Ethyl levulinate was added to the biodiesel at different rates, i.e, 5, 10, 15, 20 (vol %). The effect of ethyl levulinate addition on density, kinematic viscosity, acid value, cloud point and pour point was determined and compared to the EN 14214 and ASTM D6751 specification. Consequently, ethyl levulinate appears acceptable as a cold flow improver for biodiesel fuel

Pseudomesotheliomatous primary squamous cell lung carcinoma: The first case reported in Turkey and a review of the literature

    No full text
In rare cases, pseudomesotheliomatous tumors spread diffusely within the pleura to form an encasing mass, which may be confused with diffuse malignant mesothelioma (DMM). A 73-year-old male presented with chest pain, dyspnea and a significant loss of weight and appetite. His radiological and clinical features suggested DMM. However, immunohistochemical studies revealed a primary squamous cell cancer of the lung. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of pseudomesotheliomatous primary squamous cell lung cancer in Turkey, and also the seventh case worldwide. The present report aims to present this case, along with a review of the medical literature

Correlation of IDH1, p53 and Ki-67 immunoexpression levels with morphological, clinical prognostic parameters and preoperative/postoperative radiological findings and response to treatment in high-grade glial tumor case

In this study, we aimed to investigate the prognostic factors affecting survival in adult patients with high-grade glial tumors. The retrospective study included 79 consecutive patients who were referred to our clinic for adjuvant radiotherapy/radiochemotherapy between 2010 and 2017. The effect of proposed prognostic factors on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was evaluated with univariate and multivariate analyses. Median age was 56.63 (range, 24-84) years and the median Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) at diagnosis was 89% (range, 50-100%). Most the cases (n=69; 87.1%)were histologically diagnosed as World Health Organization (WHO) grade IV. At a median follow-up of 12 months, OS and DFS were 12 and 8 months, respectively. Although age, KPS, IDH1, p53 and Ki-67 status were found to be statistically significant among the prognostic factors affecting OS in univariate analyses, only KPS, p53 and Ki-67 were statistically significant in multivariate analysis. In contrast, age, KPS, IDH1, and Ki-67 were found to be significant factors for DFS in univariate analysis, while only KPS and Ki-67 were found to be significant factors for DFS in multivariate analysis. KPS was the most important prognostic factor for OS and DFS. In the evaluation of postoperative histopathological findings, p53 and Ki-67 were found to be prognostic for OS while only Ki-67 was prognostic for DFS. However, IDH1, which is known as an important prognostic factor, did not have a significant prognostic value, which could be due to the limited number of cases in our study.
