Approximate cross-validation formula for Bayesian linear regression
Cross-validation (CV) is a technique for evaluating the ability of
statistical models/learning systems based on a given data set. Despite its wide
applicability, the rather heavy computational cost can prevent its use as the
system size grows. To resolve this difficulty in the case of Bayesian linear
regression, we develop a formula for evaluating the leave-one-out CV error
approximately without actually performing CV. The usefulness of the developed
formula is tested by statistical mechanical analysis for a synthetic model.
This is confirmed by application to a real-world supernova data set as well.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, invited paper for Allerton2016 conferenc
Determination of ADAMTS13 and Its Clinical Significance for ADAMTS13 Supplementation Therapy to Improve the Survival of Patients with Decompensated Liver Cirrhosis
The liver plays a central role in hemostasis by synthesizing clotting factors, coagulation inhibitors, and fibrinolytic proteins. Liver cirrhosis (LC), therefore, impacts on both primary and secondary hemostatic mechanisms. ADAMTS13 is a metalloproteinase, produced exclusively in hepatic stellate cells, and specifically cleaves unusually large von Willebrand factor multimers (UL-VWFM). Deficiency of ADAMTS13 results in accumulation of UL-VWFM, which induces platelet clumping or thrombi under high shear stress, followed by sinusoidal microcirculatory disturbances and subsequent progression of liver injuries, eventually leading to multiorgan failure. The marked imbalance between decreased ADAMTS13 activity (ADAMTS13 : AC) and increased production of UL-VWFM indicating a high-risk state of platelet microthrombi formation was closely related to functional liver capacity, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and intractable ascites in advanced LC. Some end-stage LC patients with extremely low ADAMTS13 : AC and its IgG inhibitor may reflect conditions similar to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) or may reflect “subclinical TTP.” Hence, cirrhotic patients with severe to moderate deficiency of ADAMTS13 : AC may be candidates for FFP infusion as a source of ADAMTS13 or for recombinant ADAMTS13 supplementation. Such treatments may improve the survival of patients with decompensated LC

Psychophysical evaluation of calibration curve for diagnostic LCD monitor
金沢大学大学院医学系研究科量子医療技術学Purpose. In 1998, Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine (DICOM) proposed a calibration tool, the grayscale standard display function (GSDF), to obtain output consistency of radiographs. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of investigating the relation between perceptual linearity and detectability on a calibration curve. Materials and methods. To determine a suitable calibration curve for diagnostic liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors, the GSDF and Commission Internationale de l\u27Eclairage (CIE) curves were compared using psychophysical gradient δ and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for clinical images. Results. We succeeded in expressing visually recognized contrast directly using δ instead of the just noticeable difference (JND) index of the DICOM standard. As a result, we found that the visually recognized contrast at low luminance areas on the LCD monitor calibrated by the CIE curve is higher than that calibrated by the GSDF curve. On the ROC analysis, there was no significant difference in tumor detectability between GSDF and CIE curves for clinical thoracic images. However, the area parameter Az of the CIE curve is superior to that of the GSDF curve. The detectability of tumor shadows in the thoracic region on clinical images using the CIE curve was superior to that using the GSDF curve owing to the high absolute value of δ in the low luminance range. Conclusion. We conclude that the CIE curve is the most suitable tool for calibrating diagnostic LCD monitors, rather than the GSDF curve. © Japan Radiological Society 2006
General tendencies of stable isotopes and major chemical constituents of the Dome Fuji deep ice core (scientific paper)
Stable isotope compositions of water and major chemical constituents of the Dome Fuji ice core are analyzed and the data sets over the entire depth of the 2503-m core are presented in appropriate time resolution as consecutive series of average value in definite terms. These results based on the first stage analyses allow a temporal climatic dividing of the three glacial-interglacial cycles present in the records. A Comparison of the climatic and environmental characteristics of these climate stages is presented

Cutibacterium acnes-derived extracellular vesicles promote tumor growth in renal cell carcinoma
Jingushi K., Kawashima A., Tanikawa S., et al. Cutibacterium acnes-derived extracellular vesicles promote tumor growth in renal cell carcinoma. Cancer Science, (2024); https://doi.org/10.1111/cas.16202.Bacterial flora are present in various parts of the human body, including the intestine, and are thought to be involved in the etiology of various diseases such as multiple sclerosis, intestinal diseases, cancer, and uterine diseases. In recent years, the presence of bacterial 16S rRNA genes has been revealed in blood, which was previously thought to be a sterile environment, and characteristic blood microbiomes have been detected in various diseases. However, the mechanism and the origin of the bacterial information are unknown. In this study, we performed 16S rRNA metagenomic analysis of bacterial DNA in serum extracellular vesicles from five healthy donors and seven patients with renal cell carcinoma and detected Cutibacterium acnes DNA as a characteristic bacterial DNA in the serum extracellular vesicles of patients with renal cell carcinoma. In addition, C. acnes DNA was significantly reduced in postoperative serum extracellular vesicles from patients with renal cell carcinoma compared with that in preoperative serum extracellular vesicles from these patients and was also detected in tumor tissue and extracellular vesicles from tumor tissue-associated microbiota, suggesting an association between C. acnes extracellular vesicles and renal cell carcinoma. C. acnes extracellular vesicles were taken up by renal carcinoma cells to enhance their proliferative potential. C. acnes extracellular vesicles also exhibited tumor-promoting activity in a mouse model of renal cancer allografts with enhanced angiogenesis. These results suggest that extracellular vesicles released by C. acnes localized in renal cell carcinoma tissues act in a tumor-promoting manner
