SIDE, a fiber fed spectrograph for the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC)

SIDE (Super Ifu Deployable Experiment) will be a second-generation, common-user instrument for the Grantecan (GTC) on La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). It is being proposed as a spectrograph of low and intermediate resolution, highly efficient in multi-object spectroscopy and 3D spectroscopy. SIDE features the unique possibility of performing simultaneous visible and NIR observations for selected ranges. The SIDE project is leaded by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia (IAA-CSIC) in Granada (Spain) and the SIDE Consortium is formed by a total of 10 institutions from Spain, Mexico and USA. The development of the enterprising motivation in tourism students. A comparative analysis between grade and postgraduate students

Increasing the number of entrepreneurs and the quality of the entrepreneurship, it is the key thing because its positive influences over the economic activity. For this reason, it turns out essential to understand the factors that determine this phenomenon. This paper develops a model that includes those factors which allows acting on the enterprising intention of the students in the field of tourism. It has been decided on a theoretical approach based on the basics of the intentional theory from a perspective of higher education. A survey with a sample of 122 tourism students has been used ? including both graduates and students. Our analysis suggests that curricular and extracurricular activities have a different effect in the intentions, attitudes and capacities for the business? project development. On the other hand, our results show a weak impact of these activities in the business? competences

The SIDE dual VIS-NIR fiber fed spectrograph for the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias

SIDE (Super Ifu Deployable Experiment) is proposed as second-generation, common-user instrument for the GTC. It will be a low and intermediate resolution fiber fed spectrograph, highly efficient in multi-object and 3D spectroscopy. The low resolution part (R = 1500, 4000) is called Dual VIS-NIR because it will observe in the VIS and NIR bands (0.4 ~V 1.7 microns) simultaneously. Because of the large number of fibers, a set of ~10 identical spectrographs is needed, each with a mirror collimator, a dichroic and two refractive cameras. PANIC: the new panoramic NIR camera for Calar Alto

PANIC is a wide-field NIR camera, which is currently under development for the Calar Alto observatory (CAHA) in Spain. It uses a mosaic of four Hawaii-2RG detectors and covers the spectral range from 0.8-2.5 micron(z to K-band). The field-of-view is 30x30 arcmin. This instrument can be used at the 2.2m telescope (0.45arcsec/pixel, 0.5x0.5 degree FOV) and at the 3.5m telescope (0.23arcsec/pixel, 0.25x0.25 degree FOV). The operating temperature is about 77K, achieved by liquid Nitrogen cooling. The cryogenic optics has three flat folding mirrors with diameters up to 282 mm and nine lenses with diameters between 130 mm and 255 mm. A compact filter unit can carry up to 19 filters distributed over four filter wheels. Narrow band (1%) filters can be used. The instrument has a diameter of 1.1 m and it is about 1 m long. The weight limit of 400 kg at the 2.2m telescope requires a light-weight cryostat design. The aluminium vacuum vessel and radiation shield have wall thicknesses of only 6 mm and 3 mm respectively.Comment: This paper has been presented in the SPIE of Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2008 in Marseille (France

The formation of self-management teams in Higher Education institutions. Satisfaction and effectiveness

This paper explores how self-management work groups are formed in higher education institutions and how this affects the effectiveness of the teams. For this, we investigated the experiences of 560 students who were members of self-management learning teams, using factorial analysis, cluster analysis and ordinal logit regression. We focus on self-management teams, where students form work groups autonomously, and making decisions with whom to collaborate. Thus, students influence the composition of their groups, which will condition the internal dynamic of teams, and its subsequent effect on the effectiveness of the groups. Our paper contributes to the literature on student-centred perspectives highlighting how the formation of self-management teams has an impact on their satisfaction and effectiveness. Moreover, we identify four criteria (competencies, academic level, social relationships, and ad hoc) during the formation of self-management teams that have a differential impact on the effectiveness and potential conflict in the team. Additionally, our results reveal three groups of students, regarding the formation criteria of self-management teams: a first group where the academic level criteria prevails, a second group based on competencies, and finally, a group that combines social relationships and ad hoc criteria. Moreover, we find that self-management teams based on the competencies and academic level criteria have a higher level of effectiveness and satisfaction than the formation of self-management teams based on social relations and ad hoc decisions. Moreover, the results show that the exclusive use of academic level as a formation criteria is potentially a source of conflict in the self-management team

The effect of tourism education on students? entrepreneurial vocation

This paper aims to examine how higher education affects entrepreneurial vocation in a very specific segment, namely university education in tourism. We used a theoretical approach based on the psychological foundations of intentional theory to analyse a sample of 122 graduate and undergraduate university students in tourism from the perspective of higher education. The results show the differential effect of curricular and extracurricular activities on intentions, attitudes and behavioural control, while there is very little effect on the development of entrepreneurial competencies

The effect of curricular and extracurricular activities on university students? entrepreneurial intention and competences

This study examines how the alliance-building process affects the intention to enter into international alliances in the case of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). From a psychological perspective (Perceived Behavioural Control), the authors analyse the alliance-building process as an inhibitor of the international collaboration intention, considering to what extent the experience affects the intention of the partners involved. The study explores these hypotheses based on a sample of 220 Spanish SMEs. The results provide empirical evidence showing that the intention to develop international alliances is negatively affected by the search and the selection process as well as by the negotiation of the agreement, which reduces the intention to establish an international agreement. In addition, the intention is moderated by the experience of the SME manager. Moreover, there is a negative relationship between the extent of the SME manager's international experience and the intention to develop an international alliance
