    Phase Separation in A-site Ordered Perovskite Manganite LaBaMn2_2O6_6 Probed by 139^{139}La and 55^{55}Mn NMR

    139^{139}La- and 55^{55}Mn-NMR spectra demonstrate that the ground state of the A-site ordered perovskite manganite LaBaMn2_2O6_6 is a spatial mixture of the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFI(CE)) regions, which are assigned to the metallic and the insulating charge ordered state, respectively. This exotic coexisting state appears below 200 K via a first-order-like formation of the AFI(CE) state inside the FM one. Mn spin-spin relaxation rate indicates that the FM region coexisting with the AFI(CE) one in LaBaMn2_2O6_6 is identical to the bulk FM phase of the disordered form La0.5_{0.5}Ba0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 in spite of the absence of A-site disorder. This suggests mesoscopic rather than nanoscopic nature of FM region in LaBaMn2_2O6_6\@.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Let

    Exact ground state and kink-like excitations of a two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet

    A rare example of a two dimensional Heisenberg model with an exact dimerized ground state is presented. This model, which can be regarded as a variation on the kagome lattice, has several features of interest: it has a highly (but not macroscopically) degenerate ground state; it is closely related to spin chains studied by earlier authors; in particular, it is probably the first genuinely two-dimensional quantum system to exhibit domain-wall-like ``kink'' excitations normally found only in one-dimensional systems. In some limits it decouples into non-interacting chains, purely dynamically and not because of weakening of interchain couplings: indeed, paradoxically, this happens in the limit of strong coupling of the chains.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 5 figures included via epsfi

    Full auto optical afterglow searching system: MIKOTS

    Recently, to observe afterglow at various places has appeared necessary. To do so, we have set a fully automated afterglow searching system named MIKOTS. The aperture of our telescope, with a CCD camera, is 300 mm and the focal length is about 1000 mm. The CCD has 512 × 512 pixels size corresponding to a chip size of 10.2 mm ×10.2 mm. The field of view, resolution and lower limit magnitude are 37'.0 × 37'.0, 4".12 × 4".12 and 18.1, respectively. This system can start observation less than 15 seconds after receiving the data from GCN

    7Li NMR measurements were performed in the metallic spinel LiV2O4. The temperature dependencies of the line width, the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation rate were investigated in the temperature range 30 mK < T < 280 K. For temperatures T < 1 K we observe a spin-lattice relaxation rate which slows down exponentially. The NMR results can be explained by a spin-liquid behavior and the opening of a spin gap of the order 0.6 K

    Hepatocyte growth factor and invasion-stimulatory activity are induced in pleural fluid by surgery in lung cancer patients

    Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a stromal cell-derived cytokine that can stimulate matrix invasion by carcinoma cells. We analysed the concentrations of HGF and invasion-stimulatory activity in pleural fluid after lung surgery. The concentration of HGF in pleural fluids was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in seven patients who underwent pulmonary resection for primary or metastatic lung cancer. The effect of the pleural fluid on cancer cell invasion across reconstituted basement membrane (Matrigel) was assessed with a Boyden chamber assay using a lung adenocarcinoma cell line, A549. HGF levels in the pleural fluid after lung surgery ranged from 6.0 to 23.0 ng ml−1 (average: 10.2 ± 4.3 ng ml−1). The matrix invasion of lung carcinoma cells in the presence of the pleural fluid was significantly higher than that in the presence of culture medium alone or sera from normal subjects (P < 0.01). The invasion-stimulatory activity of the pleural fluid was strongly inhibited by HGF-neutralizing antibody. Positive correlation was found between the HGF level and invasion-stimulatory activity in the pleural fluids and normal sera (P = 0.0073). This is the first report demonstrating that the lung surgery induces a considerable amount of HGF, which is closely correlated with the invasion-stimulatory activity of the pleural fluid. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    Spin-fluctuation exchange study of superconductivity in two- and three-dimensional single-band Hubbard models

    In order to identify the most favorable situation for superconductivity in the repulsive single-band Hubbard model, we have studied instabilities for d-wave pairing mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and p-pairing mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations with the fluctuation exchange approximation in both two dimensions and three dimensions. By systematically varying the band filling and band structure we have shown that (i) d-pairing is stronger in two dimensions than in three dimensions, and (ii) p-pairing is much weaker than the d-pairing.Comment: RevTex, 5 figures in Postscript, to be published in Phys.
