Energy-dependent evolution in IC10 X-1: hard evidence for an extended corona and implications
We have analyzed a ~130 ks XMM-Newton observation of the dynamically confirmed black hole + Wolf-Rayet (BH+WR) X-ray binary (XB) IC10 X-1, covering ~1 orbital cycle. This system experiences periodic intensity dips every ~35 hr. We find that energy-independent evolution is rejected at a >5Ï level. The spectral and timing evolution of IC10 X-1 are best explained by a compact disk blackbody and an extended Comptonized component, where the thermal component is completely absorbed and the Comptonized component is partially covered during the dip. We consider three possibilities for the absorber: cold material in the outer accretion disk, as is well documented for Galactic neutron star (NS) XBs at high inclination; a stream of stellar wind that is enhanced by traveling through the L1 point; and a spherical wind. We estimated the corona radius (r ADC) for IC10 X-1 from the dip ingress to be ~106 km, assuming absorption from the outer disk, and found it to be consistent with the relation between r ADC and 1-30 keV luminosity observed in Galactic NS XBs that spans two orders of magnitude. For the other two scenarios, the corona would be larger. Prior BH mass (M BH) estimates range over 23-38 M â, depending on the inclination and WR mass. For disk absorption, the inclination, i, is likely to be ~60-80°, with M BH ~ 24-41 M â. Alternatively, the L1-enhanced wind requires i ~ 80°, suggesting ~24-33 M â. For a spherical absorber, i ~ 40°, and M BH ~ 50-65 M â
Experiences with a weighted decision tree learner
Machine learning algorithms for inferring decision trees typically choose a single âbestâ tree to describe the training data. Recent research has shown that classification performance can be significantly improved by voting predictions of multiple, independently produced decision trees. This paper describes an algorithm, OB1, that makes a weighted sum over many possible models. We describe one instance of OB1, that includes all possible decision trees as well as naĂŻve Bayesian models. OB1 is compared with a number of other decision tree and instance based learning algorithms on some of the data sets from the UCI repository. Both an information gain and an accuracy measure are used for the comparison. On the information gain measure OB1 performs significantly better than all the other algorithms. On the accuracy measure it is significantly better than all the algorithms except naĂŻve Bayes which performs comparably to OB1
Physical stimuli-responsive vesicles in drug delivery: Beyond liposomes and polymersomes
Over the past few decades, a range of vesicle-based drug delivery systems have entered clinical practice and several others are in various stages of clinical translation. While most of these vesicle constructs are lipid-based (liposomes), or polymer-based (polymersomes), recently new classes of vesicles have emerged that defy easy classification. Examples include assemblies with small molecule amphiphiles, biologically derived membranes, hybrid vesicles with two or more classes of amphiphiles, or more complex hierarchical structures such as vesicles incorporating gas bubbles or nanoparticulates in the lumen or membrane. In this review, we explore these recent advances and emerging trends at the edge and just beyond the research fields of conventional liposomes and polymersomes. A focus of this review is the distinct behaviors observed for these classes of vesicles when exposed to physical stimuli - such as ultrasound, heat, light and mechanical triggers - and we discuss the resulting potential for new types of drug delivery, with a special emphasis on current challenges and opportunities

Characterizing HV XLPE cables by electrical, chemical and microstructural measurements on cable peeling: Effects of surface roughness, thermal treatment and peeling location
Characterization of the electrical, chemical, and microstructural properties of high voltage cables was the first step of the European project âARTEMISâ, which has the aim of investigating degradation processes and constructing aging models for the diagnosis of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. Cables produced by two different manufacturers were subjected to a large number of electrical, microstructural, and chemical characterizations, using cable peelings, instead of lengths of whole cables, as specimens for the measurements. Here the effect of surface deformation and roughness due to peeling and the relevance and significance of thermal pre-treatment prior to electrical and other measurements is discussed. Special emphasis is put on space charge, conduction current and luminescence measurements. We also consider the dependence of these properties on the spatial position of the specimen within the cable. It is shown that even though the two faces of the cable peel specimens have different roughness, the low-field electrical properties seem quite insensitive to surface roughness, while significant differences are detectable at high fields. Thermal pre-treatment is required to stabilize the insulating material to enable us to obtain reproducible results and reliable inter-comparisons throughout the whole project. The spatial position of the specimens along the cable radius can also have a non-negligible influence on the measured properties, due to differential microstructure and chemical composition
Exchange-coupling constants, spin density map, and Q dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering intensity in single-molecule magnets
The Q dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensity of
transitions within the ground-state spin multiplet of single-molecule magnets
(SMMs) is considered. For these transitions, the Q dependence is related to the
spin density map in the ground state, which in turn is governed by the
Heisenberg exchange interactions in the cluster. This provides the possibility
to infer the exchange-coupling constants from the Q dependence of the INS
transitions within the spin ground state. The potential of this strategy is
explored for the M = +-10 -> +- 9 transition within the S = 10 multiplet of the
molecule Mn12 as an example. The Q dependence is calculated for powder as well
as single-crystal Mn12 samples for various exchange-coupling situations
discussed in the literature. The results are compared to literature data on a
powder sample of Mn12 and to measurements on an oriented array of about 500
single-crystals of Mn12. The calculated Q dependence exhibits significant
variation with the exchange-coupling constants, in particular for a
single-crystal sample, but the experimental findings did not permit an
unambiguous determination. However, although challenging, suitable experiments

A robust liposomal platform for direct colorimetric detection of sphingomyelinase enzyme and inhibitors
The enzyme sphingomyelinase (SMase) is an important biomarker for several diseases such as Niemann Pickâs, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and HIV. We present a two-component colorimetric SMase activity assay that is more sensitive and much faster than currently available commercial assays. Herein, SMase-triggered release of cysteine from a sphingomyelin (SM)-based liposome formulation with 60 mol % cholesterol causes gold nanoparticle (AuNP) aggregation, enabling colorimetric detection of SMase activities as low as 0.02 mU/mL, corresponding to 1.4 pM concentration. While the lipid composition offers a stable, nonleaky liposome platform with minimal background signal, high specificity toward SMase avoids cross-reactivity of other similar phospholipases. Notably, use of an SM-based liposome formulation accurately mimics the natural in vivo substrate: the cell membrane. We studied the physical rearrangement process of the lipid membrane during SMase-mediated hydrolysis of SM to ceramide using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. A change in lipid phase from a liquid to gel state bilayer with increasing concentration of ceramide accounts for the observed increase in membrane permeability and consequent release of encapsulated cysteine. We further demonstrated the effectiveness of the sensor in colorimetric screening of small-molecule drug candidates, paving the way for the identification of novel SMase inhibitors in minutes. Taken together, the simplicity, speed, sensitivity, and naked-eye readout of this assay offer huge potential in point-of-care diagnostics and high-throughput drug screening
Risk mapping for HPAI H5N1 in Africa - Improving surveillance for virulent bird flu: Final report and maps
More than 85 percent of households in rural Africa raise poultry for food, income, or both, and many people live in close contact with their birds. The possibility of an epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is therefore a major concern. Since 2006 bird fl u has been introduced into at least 11 countries in Africa, and over 600 outbreaks reported.
Vigilance is key to limiting the disease but animal health personnel cannot monitor everywhere at once. This risk-mapping project was designed to help prioritize their efforts by showing in which places outbreaks are more likely to occur.
A risk map is a complex, computer-generated image that shows the spatial distribution of the predicted risk of a disease. It is based on the spatial distribution of ârisk factorsâ associated with an increased risk of disease, and the relative importance of each of these factors. In the case of virulent bird fl u, risk factors include major transport routes, markets where poultry may be traded, and wetlands with the possibility of contact between poultry and wild birds.
Researchers in this project have prepared risk maps for bird fl u in Africa using multi-criteria decision modeling (MCDM). In this way they have integrated data and information from such diverse sources as published scientific literature, maps available in the public domain, field surveys and expert consultations
