    Isotropic magnetization response of electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni–W alloy nanowire arrays

    Isotropic magnetization response was demonstrated in electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni–15 % W alloy nanowire arrays, which can be applied to nanoscale magnetic field sensors. The Ni–W alloy nanowire arrays were electrochemically synthesized on a nanochannel template electrode from an aqueous electrolytic solution. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns revealed that Ni–15 % W alloy deposits were composed of ultrafine crystal grains with a supersaturated solid solution phase. The magnetization of the Ni–15 % W alloy thin films reached saturation at around 2.5 kOe in a perpendicular direction to the film plane, whereas the pure Ni thin films hardly magnetized in the perpendicular direction. On the contrary, Ni–15 % W alloy nanowire arrays were easily magnetized, and reach saturation at around 1.0 kOe, even in a perpendicular direction to the array film plane that corresponds to the long-axis direction of the alloy nanowires

    Baseline characteristics of patients in the reduction of events with darbepoetin alfa in heart failure trial (RED-HF)

    <p>Aims: This report describes the baseline characteristics of patients in the Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF) which is testing the hypothesis that anaemia correction with darbepoetin alfa will reduce the composite endpoint of death from any cause or hospital admission for worsening heart failure, and improve other outcomes.</p> <p>Methods and results: Key demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings, along with baseline treatment, are reported and compared with those of patients in other recent clinical trials in heart failure. Compared with other recent trials, RED-HF enrolled more elderly [mean age 70 (SD 11.4) years], female (41%), and black (9%) patients. RED-HF patients more often had diabetes (46%) and renal impairment (72% had an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). Patients in RED-HF had heart failure of longer duration [5.3 (5.4) years], worse NYHA class (35% II, 63% III, and 2% IV), and more signs of congestion. Mean EF was 30% (6.8%). RED-HF patients were well treated at randomization, and pharmacological therapy at baseline was broadly similar to that of other recent trials, taking account of study-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria. Median (interquartile range) haemoglobin at baseline was 112 (106–117) g/L.</p> <p>Conclusion: The anaemic patients enrolled in RED-HF were older, moderately to markedly symptomatic, and had extensive co-morbidity.</p&gt

    Magnetic properties of electrodeposited Co-W thin films

    Thin films of Co-W, 300-500 Å thick, were electrodeposited at various compositions under a wide range of plating conditions. The saturation magnetization, coercivity, and squareness ratio of the films were derived from the parallel (in-plane) and perpendicular hysteresis loops, measured by using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The magnetic properties of the films are strongly related to their microstructure. The nonmagnetic alloying elements (W) affects the saturation magnetization via the dilution mechanism. The in-plane coercivity, which increases with increasing content of the hexagonal phase and with decreasing degree of [0001]h texture, is in range of 100-600 Oe for the crystalline deposits and decreases to a few oersteds for amorphous deposits. The in-plane squareness ratio increases with the fcc or amorphous phase content and with decreasing degree of [0001]h texture. The magnetic measurements suggest that films that appeared amorphous according to their electron diffraction patterns are actually microcrystalline or at least partially crystallized

    Irreversible magnetization reversal in some Co-based alloy thin films

    Irreversible magnetization reversal occurs either by coherent or incoherent spin rotation or by wall displacement. In electrodeposited Co‐W, Co‐Fe, and Co‐P 300–500‐Å films, vibrating sample magnetometer hysteresis loop analyses indicate that magnetization reversal takes place by wall displacement. The formation and movement of domain walls has been put in evidence by Lorentz electron microscopy
