    The Emergence of the Robo-advisor

    This volume examines how technology is transforming financial applications, and how FinTech promises a similar revolution in the retirement planning processes. Robo-advisors and mobile savings apps are a few harbingers of innovations to come. Nevertheless, these changes will bring with them new ethical and regulatory considerations, design challenges related to promoting adoption by an older population less trusting of technology, and concerns over data security and privacy. Our contributors take stock of the disruptive impact of financial technology on retirement planning, saving, investment, and decumulation; and it also highlights issues that regulators, plan sponsors, academics, and policymakers must consider as retirement practices evolve at a rapid pace

    Victimization of the Homeless: Public Perceptions, Public Policies, and Implications for Social Work Practice

    Homeless individuals are particularly vulnerable to victimization, sometimes resulting in fatalities. Theories of victimization prove useful to understanding the risks inherent in being homeless as well as the public’s perception of the homeless population. Problematically, public policy that criminalizes this population may exacerbate the victimization of this group. Municipalities have turned to law enforcement and the criminal justice system to respond to people living in public spaces. Programs that ensure adequate income, affordable housing, and supportive services to prevent homelessness and address the needs of those who are homeless are essential. In addition, increased law enforcement training and the implementation of legislation to include homeless persons as a protected class in hate crime statutes is needed. In effect, these interventions focus on reducing the risks associated with being homelessness—in turn reducing the risk of their further victimization. Social workers are both uniquely positioned and ethically obligated to support these efforts and contribute to the social inclusion of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless

    A descriptive and comparative analysis of peer advisor psychosocial development

    The purpose of this study was to examine advancement toward three tasks of psychosocial development for a national group of academic peer advisors. Previous research and program evaluations have shown the positive impact serving as a peer advisor has on undergraduate students, in addition to the institutional and advisee benefits generated. In this review of the literature, no national studies were found to demonstrate the broader impact of the peer advising experience on peer advisors. This study illustrated the psychosocial impact through the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Assessment (SDTLA), which utilized three developmental tasks of Establishing and Clarifying Purpose; Developing Autonomy; and Mature Interpersonal Relationships (Winston, Miller, & Cooper, 1999b). Four research questions were employed to portray peer advisor psychosocial development levels across three tasks. The first three research questions examined peer advisor results by gender, class standing, race/ethnicity, international student status, and number of terms served as a peer advisor. The fourth research question compared peer advisor levels of achievement to a normed, national sample of college students. Results indicated that males, sophomores, and international student peer advisors experienced the greatest gains from serving as a peer advisor and that there was an interaction between class standing and number of terms served. Additionally, peer advisor participants scored higher in all tasks, with the majority of groups scoring at least one standard deviation higher than the normed college student population. Peer advisors demonstrated the most progress in the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose and Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks. Implications for peer advising program administrators were reviewed and recommendations for future research were discussed, specifying suggestions for other methodological approaches and the conceptualization of race/ethnicity and gender in psychosocial development research

The event is aimed at UK secondary school students in their final two years of study, and is intended not only to help students with their preparation for the A-Level English Literature exam but also to instil in them appreciation for Chaucer’s works, as well as for medieval literature and culture in general

    The kinematics and chemical stratification of the Type Ia supernova remnant 0519-69.0

    We present an analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray data of the young Type Ia supernova remnant 0519-69.0 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We used data from both the Chandra ACIS and XMM-Newton EPIC-MOS instruments, and high resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. The Chandra data show that there is a radial stratification of oxygen, intermediate mass elements and iron, with the emission from more massive elements more toward the center. Using a deprojection technique we measure a forward shock radius of 4.0(3) pc and a reverse shock radius of 2.7(4) pc. We took the observed stratification of the shocked ejecta into account in the modeling of the X-ray spectra with multi-component NEI models, with the components corresponding to layers dominated by one or two elements. An additional component was added in order to represent the ISM, which mostly contributed to the continuum emission. This model fits the data well, and was also employed to characterize the spectra of distinct regions extracted from the Chandra data. From our spectral analysis we find that the fractional masses of shocked ejecta for the most abundant elements are: M(O)=32%, M(Si/S)=7%/5%, M(Ar+Ca)=1%, and M(Fe) = 55%. From the continuum component we derive a circumstellar density of nH= 2.4(2)/cm^3. This density, together with the measurements of the forward and reverse shock radii suggest an age of 450+/-200 yr,somewhat lower than, but consistent with the estimate based on the optical light echo (600+/-200 yr). From the RGS spectra we measured a Doppler broadening of sigma=1873+/-50 km/s, from implying a forward shock velocity of vS = 2770+/-500 km/s. We discuss the results in the context of single degenerate explosion models, using semi-analytical and numerical modeling, and compare the characteristics of 0519-69.0 with those of other Type Ia supernova remnants.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics in press.     <em>Tendril-less</em> regulates tendril formation in pea leaves

    Tendrils are contact-sensitive, filamentous organs that permit climbing plants to tether to their taller neighbors. Tendrilled legume species are grown as field crops, where the tendrils contribute to the physical support of the crop prior to harvest. The homeotic tendril-less (tl) mutation in garden pea (Pisum sativum), identified almost a century ago, transforms tendrils into leaflets. In this study, we used a systematic marker screen of fast neutron–generated tl deletion mutants to identify Tl as a Class I homeodomain leucine zipper (HDZIP) transcription factor. We confirmed the tendril-less phenotype as loss of function by targeting induced local lesions in genomes (TILLING) in garden pea and by analysis of the tendril-less phenotype of the t mutant in sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus). The conversion of tendrils into leaflets in both mutants demonstrates that the pea tendril is a modified leaflet, inhibited from completing laminar development by Tl. We provide evidence to show that lamina inhibition requires Unifoliata/LEAFY-mediated Tl expression in organs emerging in the distal region of the leaf primordium. Phylogenetic analyses show that Tl is an unusual Class I HDZIP protein and that tendrils evolved either once or twice in Papilionoid legumes. We suggest that tendrils arose in the Fabeae clade of Papilionoid legumes through acquisition of the Tl gene

    Carbapenemase-producing enterobacterales colonisation status does not lead to more frequent admissions: a linked patient study

    Background: Hospitals in any given region can be considered as part of a network, where facilities are connected to one another – and hospital pathogens potentially spread – through the movement of patients between them. We sought to describe the hospital admission patterns of patients known to be colonised with carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), and compare them with CPE-negative patient cohorts, matched on comorbidity information. Methods: We performed a linkage study in Victoria, Australia, including datasets with notifiable diseases (CPE notifications) and hospital admissions (admission dates and diagnostic codes) for the period 2011 to 2020. Where the CPE notification date occurred during a hospital admission for the same patient, we identified this as the ‘index admission’. We determined the number of distinct health services each patient was admitted to, and time to first admission to a different health service. We compared CPE-positive patients with four cohorts of CPE-negative patients, sampled based on different matching criteria. Results: Of 528 unique patients who had CPE detected during a hospital admission, 222 (42%) were subsequently admitted to a different health service during the study period. Among these patients, CPE diagnosis tended to occur during admission to a metropolitan public hospital (86%, 190/222), whereas there was a greater number of metropolitan private (23%, 52/222) and rural public (18%, 39/222) hospitals for the subsequent admission. Median time to next admission was 4 days (IQR, 0–75 days). Admission patterns for CPE-positive patients was similar to the cohort of CPE-negative patients matched on index admission, time period, and age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index. Conclusions: Movement of CPE-positive patients between health services is not a rare event. While the most common movement is from one public metropolitan health service to another, there is also a trend for movement from metropolitan public hospitals into private and rural hospitals. After accounting for clinical comorbidities, CPE colonisation status does not appear to impact on hospital admission frequency or timing. These findings support the potential utility of a centralised notification and outbreak management system for CPE positive patients
