Session B5: Efficiency of a Nature-Like Bypass Channel at Rodley Weir, River Aire
Abstract:
Man-made physical barriers (weirs) have disrupted longitudinal connectivity in many river systems around the world for centuries. Impacts of weirs on fish communities centers on the reduced ability of fish to perform upstream migrations. To counter the potential effects these structures are having on fish communities, a number of fish pass designs have been developed to ease passage around potential barriers. To monitor the effectiveness of a recently constructed nature like bypass on the River Aire, Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) systems were installed to observe movements of brown trout (Salmo trutta). The array consists of four swim through antennas, two at either end of the pass so that swimming direction could be determined. A total of 111 wild brown trout were caught, PIT tagged and released 380 m downstream of the fish pass entrance. In total 57 brown trout (51%) were detected on the most downstream loop, and of these 49 successfully entered the pass (86%). Thirtyeight of these successfully exited the pass in an upstream direction (78%). Further analysis found that a select number of fish used the pass as an area of refuge during high flows. The possible reasons for these findings are discussed in relation to flow, temperature, time of day, season and fish size. This information is important to improve our understanding of fish pass performance, thus informing future best practice guidance of fish passage designs
Detection of OH absorption against PSR B1849+00
We have searched for OH absorption against seven pulsars using the Arecibo
telescope. In both OH mainlines (at 1665 and 1667 MHz), deep and narrow
absorption features were detected toward PSR B1849+00. In addition, we have
detected several absorption and emission features against B33.6+0.1, a nearby
supernova remnant (SNR). The most interesting result of this study is that a
pencil-sharp absorption sample against the PSR differs greatly from the
large-angle absorption sample observed against the SNR. If both the PSR and the
SNR probe the same molecular cloud then this finding has important implications
for absorption studies of the molecular medium, as it shows that the statistics
of absorbing OH depends on the size of the background source. We also show that
the OH absorption against the PSR most likely originates from a small (<30
arcsec) and dense (>10^5 cm^-3) molecular clump.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Spin-Orbit Alignment for the Eccentric Exoplanet HD 147506b
The short-period exoplanet HD 147506b (also known as HAT-P-2b) has an eccentric orbit, raising the possibility that it migrated through planet-planet scattering or Kozai oscillations accompanied by tidal dissipation. Either of these scenarios could have significantly tilted the orbit relative to the host star's equatorial plane. Here we present spectroscopy of a transit of HD 147506b and assess the spin-orbit alignment via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. We find the angle between the sky projections of the stellar spin axis and orbital axis to be aligned within 14°. Thus, we find no corroborating evidence for scattering or Kozai migration, although these scenarios cannot be ruled out with the present data
Effectiveness of the International Phytosanitary Standard ISPM No. 15 on Reducing Wood Borer Infestation Rates in Wood Packaging Material Entering the United States
Numerous bark- and wood-infesting insects have been introduced to new countries by international trade where some have caused severe environmental and economic damage. Wood packaging material (WPM), such as pallets, is one of the high risk pathways for the introduction of wood pests. International recognition of this risk resulted in adoption of International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM15) in 2002, which provides treatment standards for WPM used in international trade. ISPM15 was originally developed by members of the International Plant Protection Convention to âpractically eliminateâ the risk of international transport of most bark and wood pests via WPM. The United States (US) implemented ISPM15 in three phases during 2005â2006. We compared pest interception rates of WPM inspected at US ports before and after US implementation of ISPM15 using the US Department of Agriculture AQIM (Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Monitoring) database. Analyses of records from 2003â2009 indicated that WPM infestation rates declined 36â52% following ISPM15 implementation, with results varying in statistical significance depending on the selected starting parameters. Power analyses of the AQIM data indicated there was at least a 95% chance of detecting a statistically significant reduction in infestation rates if they dropped by 90% post-ISPM15, but the probability fell as the impact of ISPM15 lessened. We discuss several factors that could have reduced the apparent impact of ISPM15 on lowering WPM infestation levels, and suggest ways that ISPM15 could be improved. The paucity of international interception data impeded our ability to conduct more thorough analyses of the impact of ISPM15, and demonstrates the need for well-planned sampling programs before and after implementation of major phytosanitary policies so that their effectiveness can be assessed. A PfRH5-Based Vaccine Is Efficacious against Heterologous Strain Blood-Stage Plasmodium falciparum Infection in Aotus Monkeys
SummaryAntigenic diversity has posed a critical barrier to vaccine development against the pathogenic blood-stage infection of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. To date, only strain-specific protection has been reported by trials of such vaccines in nonhuman primates. We recently showed that P. falciparum reticulocyte binding protein homolog 5 (PfRH5), a merozoite adhesin required for erythrocyte invasion, is highly susceptible to vaccine-inducible strain-transcending parasite-neutralizing antibody. In vivo efficacy of PfRH5-based vaccines has not previously been evaluated. Here, we demonstrate that PfRH5-based vaccines can protect Aotus monkeys against a virulent vaccine-heterologous P. falciparum challenge and show that such protection can be achieved by a human-compatible vaccine formulation. Protection was associated with anti-PfRH5 antibody concentration and in vitro parasite-neutralizing activity, supporting the use of this in vitro assay to predict the in vivo efficacy of future vaccine candidates. These data suggest that PfRH5-based vaccines have potential to achieve strain-transcending efficacy in humans
Fraping, social norms and online representations of self
Charting the Digital Lifespan research project was funded by EPSRC Grant Reference No EP/L00383X/1.This paper reports on qualitative insights generated from 46 semi-structured interviews with adults ranging in age from 18 to 70. It focuses on an online social behaviour, âfrapingâ, which involves the unauthorised alteration of content on a person's social networking site (SNS) profile by a third party. Our exploratory research elucidates what constitutes a frape, who is involved in it, and what the social norms surrounding the activity are. We provide insights into how frape contributes to online sociality and the co-construction of online identity, and identify opportunities for further work in understanding the interplay between online social identities, social groups and social norms.PostprintPeer reviewe
PHANGS: Constraining Star Formation Timescales Using the Spatial Correlations of Star Clusters and Giant Molecular Clouds
In the hierarchical view of star formation, giant molecular gas clouds (GMCs)
undergo fragmentation to form small-scale structures made up of stars and star
clusters. Here we study the connection between young star clusters and cold gas
across a range of extragalactic environments by combining the high resolution
(1") PHANGS-ALMA catalogue of GMCs with the star cluster catalogues from
PHANGS-HST. The star clusters are spatially matched with the GMCs across a
sample of 11 nearby star-forming galaxies with a range of galactic environments
(centres, bars, spiral arms, etc.). We find that after 4-6 Myr the star
clusters are no longer associated with any gas clouds. Additionally, we measure
the autocorrelation of the star clusters and GMCs as well as their
cross-correlation to quantify the fractal nature of hierarchical star
formation. Young ( 10 Myr) star clusters are more strongly autocorrelated
on kpc and smaller spatial scales than the >10 Myr stellar populations,

Association of early imaging for back pain with clinical outcomes in older adults
IMPORTANCE: In contrast to the recommendations for younger adults, many guidelines allow for older adults with back pain to undergo imaging without waiting 4 to 6 weeks. However, early imaging may precipitate interventions that do not improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To compare function and pain at the 12-month follow-up visit among older adults who received early imaging with those who did not receive early imaging after a new primary care visit for back pain without radiculopathy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective cohort of 5239 patients 65 years or older with a new primary care visit for back pain (2011-2013) in 3 US health care systems. We matched controls 1:1 using propensity score matching of demographic and clinical characteristics, including diagnosis, pain severity, pain duration, functional status, and prior resource use.
EXPOSURES: Diagnostic imaging (plain films, computed tomography [CT], magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) of the lumbar or thoracic spine within 6 weeks of the index visit.
PRIMARY OUTCOME: back or leg pain-related disability measured by the modified Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (score range, 0-24; higher scores indicate greater disability) 12 months after enrollment.
RESULTS: Among the 5239 patients, 1174 had early radiographs and 349 had early MRI/CT. At 12 months, neither the early radiograph group nor the early MRI/CT group differed significantly from controls on the disability questionnaire. The mean score for patients who underwent early radiography was 8.54 vs 8.74 among the control group (difference, -0.10 [95% CI, -0.71 to 0.50]; mixed model, Pâ=â.36). The mean score for the early MRI/CT group was 9.81 vs 10.50 for the control group (difference,-0.51 [-1.62 to 0.60]; mixed model, Pâ=â.18).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Among older adults with a new primary care visit for back pain, early imaging was not associated with better 1-year outcomes. The value of early diagnostic imaging in older adults for back pain without radiculopathy is uncertain
