Transcriptomic and metabolomic shifts in rice roots in response to Cr (VI) stress
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Widespread use of chromium (Cr) contaminated fields due to careless and inappropriate management practices of effluent discharge, mostly from industries related to metallurgy, electroplating, production of paints and pigments, tanning, and wood preservation elevates its concentration in surface soil and eventually into rice plants and grains. In spite of many previous studies having been conducted on the effects of chromium stress, the precise molecular mechanisms related to both the effects of chromium phytotoxicity, the defense reactions of plants against chromium exposure as well as translocation and accumulation in rice remain poorly understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Detailed analysis of genome-wide transcriptome profiling in rice root is reported here, following Cr-plant interaction. Such studies are important for the identification of genes responsible for tolerance, accumulation and defense response in plants with respect to Cr stress. Rice root metabolome analysis was also carried out to relate differential transcriptome data to biological processes affected by Cr (VI) stress in rice. To check whether the Cr-specific motifs were indeed significantly over represented in the promoter regions of Cr-responsive genes, occurrence of these motifs in whole genome sequence was carried out. In the background of whole genome, the lift value for these 14 and 13 motifs was significantly high in the test dataset. Though no functional role has been assigned to any of the motifs, but all of these are present as promoter motifs in the Database of orthologus promoters.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings clearly suggest that a complex network of regulatory pathways modulates Cr-response of rice. The integrated matrix of both transcriptome and metabolome data after suitable normalization and initial calculations provided us a visual picture of the correlations between components. Predominance of different motifs in the subsets of genes suggests the involvement of motif-specific transcription modulating proteins in Cr stress response of rice.</p
The Jacob2 Lectin of the Entamoeba histolytica Cyst Wall Binds Chitin and Is Polymorphic
For many years, we and others have used cysts of Entamoeba invadens (Ei), a reptilian parasite, to model the infectious and diagnostic cysts of the human pathogen Entamoeba histolytica (Eh). The Ei cyst wall is composed of chitin fibrils, as well as Jacob and Jessie lectins that have unique chitin-binding domains. Our recent results suggest a “wattle and daub” model of the Ei cyst wall, where the wattle or sticks (chitin fibrils bound by multivalent Jacob lectins) is constructed prior to the addition of the mortar or daub (self-aggregating Jessie3 lectins). Here we “humanize” the Ei model of the cyst wall with four findings. First, a recombinant Eh Jacob2 lectin, which has three predicted chitin-binding domains surrounding a large spacer domain, binds chitin beads. Second, polymorphisms in the spacer domain of EhJacob2 discriminate clinical isolates of Entamoeba. Third, chitinase, Jacob2 lectin, and Jessie3 lectin are present in cyst walls of clinical isolates of Entamoeba. Production of phi mesons at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel
from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by
the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are
extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from
the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted
with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope
parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are
also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the freeze-out
temperature and the expansion velocity values are consistent with the values
previously derived from fitting single hadron inclusive data. As a function of
transverse momentum the collisions scaled peripheral.to.central yield ratio RCP
for the is comparable to that of pions rather than that of protons. This result
lends support to theoretical models which distinguish between baryons and

Effectiveness of interspinous implant surgery in patients with intermittent neurogenic claudication: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Item does not contain fulltextINTRODUCTION: Despite an increasing implantation rate of interspinous process distraction (IPD) devices in the treatment of intermittent neurogenic claudication (INC), definitive evidence on the clinical effectiveness of implants is lacking. The main objective of this review was to perform a meta-analysis of all systematic reviews, randomized clinical trials and prospective cohort series to quantify the effectiveness of IPDs and to evaluate the potential side-effects. METHODS: Data from all studies prospectively describing clinical results based on validated outcome scales and reporting complications of treatment of patients with INC with IPD placement. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane (CENTRAL), CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, Science Direct up to July 2010. Studies describing patients with INC caused by lumbar stenosis, reporting complication rate and reporting based on validated outcome scores, were eligible. Studies with only instrumented IPD results were excluded. RESULTS: Eleven studies eligible studies were identified. Two independently RCTs and eight prospective cohorts were available. In total 563 patients were treated with IPDs. All studies showed improvement in validated outcome scores after 6 weeks and 1 year. Pooled data based on the Zurich Claudication Questionnaire of the RCTs were more in favor of IPD treatment compared with conservative treatment (pooled estimate 23.2, SD 18.5-27.8). Statistical heterogeneity after pooled data was low (I-squared 0.0, p = 0.930). Overall complication rate was 7%. CONCLUSION: As the evidence is relatively low and the costs are high, more thorough (cost-) effectiveness studies should be performed before worldwide implementation is introduced
Seaweed polysaccharide-based hydrogels used for the regeneration of articular cartilage
This manuscript provides an overview of the in vitro and in vivo studies reported in the
literature focusing on seaweed polysaccharides based hydrogels that have been proposed for
applications in regenerative medicine, particularly, in the field of cartilage tissue engineering.
For a better understanding of the main requisites for these specific applications, the main
aspects of the native cartilage structure, as well as recognized diseases that affect this tissue are
briefly described. Current available treatments are also presented to emphasize the need for
alternative techniques. The following part of this review is centered on the description of the
general characteristics of algae polysaccharides, as well as relevant properties required for
designing hydrogels for cartilage tissue engineering purposes. An in-depth overview of the
most well known seaweed polysaccharide, namely agarose, alginate, carrageenan and ulvan
biopolymeric gels, that have been proposed for engineering cartilage is also provided. Finally,
this review describes and summarizes the translational aspect for the clinical application of
alternative systems emphasizing the importance of cryopreservation and the commercial
products currently available for cartilage treatment.Authors report no declarations of interest. J/psi production from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=
200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX
experiment at RHIC. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum,
along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production
cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations.
The total J/psi cross section is 3.99 +/- 0.61(stat) +/- 0.58(sys) +/-
0.40(abs) micro barns. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80 +/- 0.23(stat) +/-

Measurement of Single Electron Event Anisotropy in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The transverse momentum dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2,
the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution, for electrons at
mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The measurement was made with respect to
the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta| = 3.1 -- 3.9). From the
result we have measured the v_2 of electrons from heavy flavor decay after
subtraction of the v_2 of electrons from other sources such as photon
conversions and Dalitz decay from light neutral mesons. We observe a non-zero

Systematic Studies of the Centrality and sqrt(s_NN) Dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta in Heavy Ion Collisions at Mid-rapidity
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged
particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6,
130 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared
to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies.
The sqrt(s_NN) dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta per pair of participants
is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The
centrality dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta is similar at all measured
incident energies. At RHIC energies the ratio of transverse energy per charged
particle was found independent of centrality and growing slowly with
sqrt(s_NN). A survey of comparisons between the data and available theoretical

Centrality Dependence of Charm Production from Single Electrons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The PHENIX experiment has measured mid-rapidity transverse momentum spectra
(0.4 < p_T < 4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in
Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Contributions to the raw spectra from
photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by
introducing a thin (1.7% X_0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are
statistically removed. The subtracted ``non-photonic'' electron spectra are
primarily due to the semi-leptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks
(charm and bottom). For all centralities, charm production is found to scale
with the nuclear overlap function, T_AA. For minimum-bias collisions the charm
cross section per binary collision is N_cc^bar/T_AA = 622 +/- 57 (stat.) +/-
