    The high resolution double echelle spectrograph of the UV telescope T-170 Feasibility study

    Since the middle of the eighties scientists from the former USSR have been planning a new very powerful instrument, the Spectrum-UV project. Since 1987 the Zentralinstitut fuer Astrophysik (ZIAP.Potsdam) and the Zentralinstitut fuer Optik und Spektroskopie (ZOS.Berlin) participated in this planning with design studies for a High Resolution Spectrograph, the main focal plane instrument of the 170 cm telescope of Spectrum-UV, T-170. The superior properties of this instrument can be highlighted with the following data: High Sensitivity: - The effective area of the primary mirror at UV wavelengths down to 115 nm will be about A=19000 cm"2. High Spectral Resolution: - The mean resolution will be about R=50000. Wide Wavelength Coverage: - 110-180 nm and 180-350 nm. High Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR): - Noise in photon counting detectors is very low: Only a few counts/sec over the whole spectral ranges. - With the orbital apogee of #>=#300000 km the background will be very low. Extended Integration Times: -Up to 100 hours during one orbit. Limiting Magnitude: - A B5V star of magnitude V=20."m5 can be observed with the full spectral resolution of R=50000 and a SNR=10 within an integration time of 100 hours. The qualification of the 3 participating German groups will enable us to design and build the complete High Resolution Double Echelle Spectrograph (HIRDES) for the T-170 telescope. At an international meeting, it was decided that the proposal for the design of the HIRDES is accepted as the baseline for the HIRDES spectrograph, and that this instrument is considered to become the German hardware contribution to the project.
