    How architects incorporate ESD criteria into the design process

    This paper will seek to answer; &quot;How do architects in Victoria incorporate Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) criteria into the design process?&quot; For the purpose of this paper, &quot;Ecologically Sustainable Development&quot; is defined in line with the judging criteria used by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects for the \u27Sustainable Architecture Award\u27. The RAIA states that (Maddison, 2003 p.7), &quot;the goal of sustainable architecture is to achieve development that improves the total quality of life, in a way that maintains the processes on which life depends. The project assessment covers ecologically sustainable development and energy efficient design:\u27 By researching exemplary building projects that have been awarded a Victorian Sustainable Architecture Award, this paper will enlighten a design methodology for the pursuit of excellence in ecologically sustainable development. Key elements in the design process will be determined by comparing and analysing the processes of different architectural practices. This will be achieved through the study of published literature on the award winning designs, qualitative analysis of interviews with the architects who designed the selected projects and quantitative analysis of questionnaires completed by the architects.<br /

    The SkyMapper Transient Survey

    The SkyMapper 1.3 m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory has now begun regular operations. Alongside the Southern Sky Survey, a comprehensive digital survey of the entire southern sky, SkyMapper will carry out a search for supernovae and other transients. The search strategy, covering a total footprint area of ~2000 deg2 with a cadence of ≤5\leq 5 days, is optimised for discovery and follow-up of low-redshift type Ia supernovae to constrain cosmic expansion and peculiar velocities. We describe the search operations and infrastructure, including a parallelised software pipeline to discover variable objects in difference imaging; simulations of the performance of the survey over its lifetime; public access to discovered transients; and some first results from the Science Verification data.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures; submitted to PAS

    Using self-monitoring to detect and manage raised blood pressure and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy: the BUMP research programme and its impact

    Raised blood pressure affects around ten percent of pregnancies worldwide, causing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Self-monitoring of blood pressure during higher-risk or hypertensive pregnancy has been shown to be feasible, acceptable, safe, and no more expensive than usual care alone. Additionally, self-testing for proteinuria has been shown to be just as accurate as healthcare professional testing, creating the potential for monitoring of multiple indicators through pregnancy. The work suggests however, that an organisational shift is needed to properly use and see benefits from self-monitored readings. This paper describes the findings from a large programme of work examining the use of self-monitoring in pregnancy, summarising the findings in the context of the wider literature and current clinical context

    The Bullet cluster at its best: weighing stars, gas and dark matter

    We present a new strong lensing mass reconstruction of the Bullet cluster (1E 0657-56) at z=0.296, based on WFC3 and ACS HST imaging and VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy. The strong lensing constraints underwent substantial revision compared to previously published analysis, there are now 14 (six new and eight previously known) multiply-imaged systems, of which three have spectroscopically confirmed redshifts (including one newly measured from this work). The reconstructed mass distribution explicitly included the combination of three mass components: i) the intra-cluster gas mass derived from X-ray observation, ii) the cluster galaxies modeled by their fundamental plane scaling relations and iii) dark matter. The model that includes the intra-cluster gas is the one with the best Bayesian evidence. This model has a total RMS value of 0.158" between the predicted and measured image positions for the 14 multiple images considered. The proximity of the total RMS to resolution of HST/WFC3 and ACS (0.07-0.15" FWHM) demonstrates the excellent precision of our mass model. The derived mass model confirms the spatial offset between the X-ray gas and dark matter peaks. The fraction of the galaxy halos mass to total mass is found to be f_s=11+/-5% for a total mass of 2.5+/-0.1 x 10^14 solar mass within a 250 kpc radial aperture.Comment: Accepted by A&A 15 pages, 12 figure

    Analysis of mutations in West Australian populations of Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei CYP51 conferring resistance to DMI fungicides

    BACKGROUND Powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei (Bgh) is a constant threat to barley production but is generally well controlled through combinations of host genetics and fungicides. An epidemic of barley powdery mildew was observed from 2007 to 2013 in the West Australian grain belt. RESULTS We collected isolates across Australia, examined their sensitivity to demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides and sequenced the Cyp51B target gene. Five amino acid substitutions were found, of which four were novel. The most resistant haplotypes increased in prevalence from 0% in 2009 to 16% in 2010 and 90% in 2011. Yeast strains expressing the Bgh Cyp51 haplotypes replicated the altered sensitivity to various DMIs and these results were complemented by in silico protein docking studies. CONCLUSIONS The planting of very susceptible cultivars and the use of a single fungicide mode of action was followed by the emergence of a major epidemic of barley powdery mildew. Widespread use of DMI fungicides led to the selection of Bgh isolates carrying both the Y137F and S524T mutations, which, as in Zymoseptoria tritici, account for resistance factors varying from 3.4 for propiconazole to 18 for tebuconazole, the major azoles used at that time in WA. © 2019 The Authors.
