    The short-lived 'Old Academy' of Antiochus of Ascalon is a movement, which arose after Sulla's siege of Athens in 86 BC and the subsequent closure of the Athenian philosophical schools. A product of the lack of institutional unity and the decentralisation of philosophical activity during the First century BC, it is a sign of the contested nature of the Academic identity during this era.     Earth observation : An integral part of a smart and sustainable city

    Over the course of the 21st century, a century in which the urbanization process of the previous one is ever on the rise, the novel smart city concept has rapidly evolved and now encompasses the broader aspect of sustainability. Concurrently, there has been a sea change in the domain of Earth observation (EO) where scientific and technological breakthroughs are accompanied by a paradigm shift in the provision of open and free data. While the urban and EO communities share the end goal of achieving sustainability, cities still lack an understanding of the value EO can bring in this direction, an next a consolidated framework for tapping the full potential of EO and integrating it in their operational modus operandi. The “SMart URBan Solutions for air quality, disasters and city growth” H2020 project (SMURBS/ERA-PLANET) sits at this scientific and policy crossroad, and, by creating bottom-up EO-driven solutions against an array of environmental urban pressures, and by expanding the network of engaged and exemplary smart cities that push the state-of-the-art in EO uptake, brings the international ongoing discussion of EO for sustainable cities closer to home and contributes in this discussion. This paper advocates for EO as an integral part of a smart and sustainable city and aspires to lead by example. To this end, it documents the project's impacts, ranging from the grander policy fields to an evolving portfolio of smart urban solutions and everyday city operations, as well as the cornerstones for successful EO integration. Drawing a parallel with the utilization of EO in supporting several aspects of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it aspires to be a point of reference for upcoming endeavors of city stakeholders and the EO community alike, to tread together, beyond traditional monitoring or urban planning, and to lay the foundations for urban sustainability.Peer reviewe

    Selective inhibition of anti-MAG IgM autoantibody binding to myelin by an antigen-specific glycopolymer.

    Anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) neuropathy is a disabling autoimmune peripheral neuropathy that is caused by circulating monoclonal IgM autoantibodies directed against the human natural killer-1 (HNK-1) epitope. This carbohydrate epitope is highly expressed on adhesion molecules such as MAG, a glycoprotein present in myelinated nerves. We previously showed the therapeutic potential of the glycopolymer poly(phenyl disodium 3-O-sulfo-β-d-glucopyranuronate)-(1→3)-β-d-galactopyranoside (PPSGG) in selectively neutralizing anti-MAG IgM antibodies in an immunological mouse model and ex vivo with sera from anti-MAG neuropathy patients. PPSGG is composed of a biodegradable backbone that multivalently presents a mimetic of the HNK-1 epitope. In this study, we further explored the pharmacodynamic properties of the glycopolymer and its ability to inhibit the binding of anti-MAG IgM to peripheral nerves. The polymer selectively bound anti-MAG IgM autoantibodies and prevented the binding of patients' anti-MAG IgM antibodies to myelin of non-human primate sciatic nerves. Upon PPSGG treatment, neither activation nor inhibition of human and murine peripheral blood mononuclear cells nor alteration of systemic inflammatory markers was observed in mice or ex vivo in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Intravenous injections of PPSGG to mice immunized against the HNK-1 epitope removed anti-MAG IgM antibodies within less than 1 hr, indicating a fast and efficient mechanism of action as compared to a B-cell depletion with anti-CD20. In conclusion, these observations corroborate the therapeutic potential of PPSGG for an antigen-specific treatment of anti-MAG neuropathy. Read the Editorial Highlight for this article on page 465

    Guillain-Barre syndrome after SARS-CoV-2 infection in an international prospective cohort study

    In the wake of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, an increasing number of patients with neurological disorders, including Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), have been reported following this infection. It remains unclear, however, if these cases are coincidental or not, as most publications were case reports or small regional retrospective cohort studies. The International GBS Outcome Study is an ongoing prospective observational cohort study enrolling patients with GBS within 2 weeks from onset of weakness. Data from patients included in this study, between 30 January 2020 and 30 May 2020, were used to investigate clinical and laboratory signs of a preceding or concurrent SARS-CoV-2 infection and to describe the associated clinical phenotype and disease course. Patients were classified according to the SARS-CoV-2 case definitions of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and laboratory recommendations of the World Health Organization. Forty-nine patients with GBS were included, of whom eight (16%) had a confirmed and three (6%) a probable SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nine of these 11 patients had no serological evidence of other recent preceding infections associated with GBS, whereas two had serological evidence of a recent Campylobacter jejuni infection. Patients with a confirmed or probable SARS-CoV-2 infection frequently had a sensorimotor variant 8/11 (73%) and facial palsy 7/11 (64%). The eight patients who underwent electrophysiological examination all had a demyelinating subtype, which was more prevalent than the other patients included in the same time window [14/30 (47%), P = 0.012] as well as historical region and age-matched control subjects included in the International GBS Outcome Study before the pandemic [23/44 (52%), P = 0.016]. The median time from the onset of infection to neurological symptoms was 16 days (interquartile range 12-22). Patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection shared uniform neurological features, similar to those previously described in other post-viral GBS patients. The frequency (22%) of a preceding SARS-CoV-2 infection in our study population was higher than estimates of the contemporaneous background prevalence of SARS-CoV-2, which may be a result of recruitment bias during the pandemic, but could also indicate that GBS may rarely follow a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Consistent with previous studies, we found no increase in patient recruitment during the pandemic for our ongoing International GBS Outcome Study compared to previous years, making a strong relationship of GBS with SARS-CoV-2 unlikely.     MusicFootprints: designing interactions for outdoor places

    This thesis is a research on how people can create a stronger connection to a place through the music that they are listening to in the specific place. It is about making a place’s identity stronger through social interactions based on people’s musical choices. A theoretical research on social interactions in public places and on the field of urban computing and urban interaction design has contributed to the formation of this thesis. Additionally, a study of design examples that have already been implemented by others and are possessed with common characteristics to the subject, as well as a set of design methodologies in terms of Research through Design process, all lead to the design of the final concept of MusicFootprints service. MusicFootprints focuses on the design quality of “imageability” and on the experimental techniques of the Situationists “dérive and détournement” in order to show that it is the way of interactivity and the position of the system in the outdoor environment that matters. Finally, it leads to the creation of a music-living archive interactive system and opens a discussion about a connection between past, present and future’s peoples’ music choices
