First Detection of A Sub-kpc Scale Molecular Outflow in the Starburst Galaxy NGC 3628
We successfully detected a molecular outflow with a scale of 370-450 pc in
the central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 3628 through deep CO(1-0)
observations by using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA). The mass of the
outflowing molecular gas is ~2.8x10^7 M_sun, and the outflow velocity is
~90(+/-10) km s^{-1}. The expansion timescale of the outflow is 3.3-6.8 Myr,
and the molecular gas mass flow rate is 4.1-8.5 M_sun yr^{-1}. It requires
mechanical energy of (1.8-2.8)x10^{54} erg to create this sub-kpc scale
molecular outflow. In order to understand the evolution of the molecular
outflow, we compare the physical properties between the molecular outflow
observed from our NMA CO(1-0) data and the plasma gas from the soft X-ray
emission of the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) archival data. We found that
the distribution between the molecular outflow and the strong plasma outflow
seems to be in a similar region. In this region, the ram pressure and the
thermal pressure of the plasma outflow are 10^{-(8-10)} dyne cm^{-2}, and the
thermal pressure of molecular outflow is 10^{-(11-13)} dyne cm^{-2}. This
implies the molecular outflow is still expanding outward. The molecular gas
consumption timescale is estimated as 17-27 Myr, and the total starburst
timescale is 20-34 Myr. The evolutionary parameter is 0.11-0.25, suggesting
that the starburst activity in NGC 3628 is still in a young stage.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Ap
Electron Delocalization in Gate-Tunable Gapless Silicene
The application of a perpendicular electric field can drive silicene into a
gapless state, characterized by two nearly fully spin-polarized Dirac cones
owing to both relatively large spin-orbital interactions and inversion symmetry
breaking. Here we argue that since inter-valley scattering from non-magnetic
impurities is highly suppressed by time reversal symmetry, the physics should
be effectively single-Dirac-cone like. Through numerical calculations, we
demonstrate that there is no significant backscattering from a single impurity
that is non-magnetic and unit-cell uniform, indicating a stable delocalized
state. This conjecture is then further confirmed from a scaling of conductance
for disordered systems using the same type of impurities.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, published versio
Seismologically determined bedload flux during the typhoon season
Continuous seismic records near river channels can be used to quantify the energy induced by river sediment transport. During the 2011 typhoon season, we deployed a seismic array along the Chishan River in the mountain area of southern Taiwan, where there is strong variability in water discharge and high sedimentation rates. We observe hysteresis in the high-frequency (5–15 Hz) seismic noise level relative to the associated hydrological parameters. In addition, our seismic noise analysis reveals an asymmetry and a high coherence in noise cross-correlation functions for several station pairs during the typhoon passage, which corresponds to sediment particles and turbulent flows impacting along the riverbed where the river bends sharply. Based on spectral characteristics of the seismic records, we also detected 20 landslide/debris flow events, which we use to estimate the sediment supply. Comparison of sediment flux between seismologically determined bedload and derived suspended load indicates temporal changes in the sediment flux ratio, which imply a complex transition process from the bedload regime to the suspension regime between typhoon passage and off-typhoon periods. Our study demonstrates the possibility of seismologically monitoring river bedload transport, thus providing valuable additional information for studying fluvial bedrock erosion and mountain landscape evolution
Axial-vector currents and tau mesonic decays
A general expression of the axial-vector current is presented, in which both
the effects of the chiral symmetry breaking and the spontaneous chiral symmetry
breaking are included. A new resonance formula of the axial-vector meson is
derived and in the limit of this formula doesn't go back
to the ``chiral limit``. The studies show that the dominance of the
axial-vector meson is associated with the satisfaction of PCAC. The dominance
of pion exchange is companied by the strong anomaly of PCAC.Comment: 8 pages, talk presented at the Fourth International Workshop on tau

Receiver-Initiated Data Collection in Wake-Up Radio Enabled mIoT Networks: Achieving Collision-Free Transmissions by Hashing and Partitioning
To achieve ultra-low energy consumption and decade-long battery lifetime for Internet of Things (IoT) networks, wake-up radio (WuR) appears as an eminent solution. While keeping devices in deep sleep for most of the time, a WuR enabled IoT device can be woken up for data transmission at any time by a wake-up call (WuC). However, collisions happen among WuCs for transmitter-initiated data reporting and among data packets for receiver-initiated data collection. In this article, we propose three novel hashing-based schemes in order to achieve collision-free data transmissions for receiver-initiated data collection. We consider first a simple scenario where all devices in a region of interest are reachable by a WuC message and propose a scheme which facilitates a scheduled time instant for data uploading of each device through a hash function. In the second scenario where IoT devices are distributed across a large region that cannot be covered by a single WuC, we propose two partitioning algorithms to enable data collection across multiple partitions. Furthermore, we extend the scenario by considering device mobility and propose another scheme which improves the partitioning algorithm to deal with mobility. Both analysis and simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.acceptedVersio
