Comparing attitudes toward time and toward money in experienced-based decisions
This paper reports an experimental comparison of attitudes toward time and toward money in experience-based decisions. Preferences were elicited under rank-dependent utility for prospects with two or three consequences expressed either in time or in monetary units. Probabilities were unknown but learned through sampling. More specifically, time and money were compared under two conditions. In a first experiment, both consequences and probabilities of prospects were unknown and learned through sequential sampling. In a second experiment, the possible consequences were revealed after the sampling. A real incentive system was implemented for both time and money. The heterogeneity of preferences was assessed for time and for money through individual and mixed modeling estimations. We observe that the nature of consequences (time or money) modifies probability weighting in terms of elevation and sensitivity. Subjects exhibit more optimism and less sensitivity to probability changes when deciding about time than about money. Revealing the consequences impacts the shape of the utility function and leaves probability weighting unchanged. We also observe that the real incentives have no effect except for the reduction in decision errors. This effect is stronger for money than for time

Detection of HC11N in the Cold Dust Cloud TMC-1
Two consecutive rotational transitions of the long cyanopolyyne HC11N,
J=39-38, and J=38-37, have been detected in the cold dust cloud TMC-1 at the
frequencies expected from recent laboratory measurements by Travers et al.
(1996), and at about the expected intensities. The astronomical lines have a
mean radial velocity of 5.8(1) km/s, in good agreement with the shorter
cyanopolyynes HC7N and HC9N observed in this very sharp-lined source [5.82(5)
and 5.83(5) km/s, respectively]. The column density of HC11N is calculated to
be 2.8x10^(11) cm^(-2). The abundance of the cyanopolyynes decreases smoothly
with length to HC11N, the decrement from one to the next being about 6 for the

Disordered, stretched, and semiflexible biopolymers in two dimensions
We study the effects of intrinsic sequence-dependent curvature for a two
dimensional semiflexible biopolymer with short-range correlation in intrinsic
curvatures. We show exactly that when not subjected to any external force, such
a system is equivalent to a system with a well-defined intrinsic curvature and
a proper renormalized persistence length. We find the exact expression for the
distribution function of the equivalent system. However, we show that such an
equivalent system does not always exist for the polymer subjected to an
external force. We find that under an external force, the effect of
sequence-disorder depends upon the averaging order, the degree of disorder, and
the experimental conditions, such as the boundary conditions. Furthermore, a
short to moderate length biopolymer may be much softer or has a smaller
apparent persistent length than what would be expected from the "equivalent
system". Moreover, under a strong stretching force and for a long biopolymer,
the sequence-disorder is immaterial for elasticity. Finally, the effect of
sequence-disorder may depend upon the quantity considered
Ionization-induced asymmetric self-phase modulation and universal modulational instability in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers
We study theoretically the propagation of relatively long pulses with
ionizing intensities in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with a
Raman-inactive gas. Due to photoionization, previously unknown types of
asymmetric self-phase modulation and `universal' modulational instabilities
existing in both normal and anomalous dispersion regions appear. We also show
that it is possible to spontaneously generate a plasma-induced continuum of
blueshifting solitons, opening up new possibilities for pushing supercontinuum
generation towards shorter and shorter wavelengths.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The Added Value of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Interventions to Mass Drug Administration for Reducing the Prevalence of Trachoma: A Systematic Review Examining
Trachoma is the leading cause of infectious blindness worldwide. The SAFE strategy, the World Health Organization-recommended method to eliminate blinding trachoma, combines developments in water, sanitation, surgery, and antibiotic treatment. Current literature does not focus on the comprehensive effect these components have on one another. The present systematic review analyzes the added benefit of water, sanitation, and hygiene education interventions to preventive mass drug administration of azithromycin for trachoma. Trials were identified from the PubMed database using a series of search terms. Three studies met the complete criteria for inclusion. Though all studies found a significant change in reduction of active trachoma prevalence, the research is still too limited to suggest the impact of the “F” and “E” components on trachoma prevalence and ultimately its effects on blindness
Force Distribution in a Granular Medium
We report on systematic measurements of the distribution of normal forces
exerted by granular material under uniaxial compression onto the interior
surfaces of a confining vessel. Our experiments on three-dimensional, random
packings of monodisperse glass beads show that this distribution is nearly
uniform for forces below the mean force and decays exponentially for forces
greater than the mean. The shape of the distribution and the value of the
exponential decay constant are unaffected by changes in the system preparation
history or in the boundary conditions. An empirical functional form for the
distribution is proposed that provides an excellent fit over the whole force
