In the title compound, [CaCo3(C4H5NO4)3(OH)3O(H2O)5]·2.54H2O, the Co atom is octahedrally coordinated by one iminodiacetate (ida) dianion as a facial O,N,O′-tridentate ligand, two μ3-OH groups and one μ3-O ligand, forming an partial Co3O4 cubane cluster. This unit coordinates to a CaII cation in an O,O′,O′′-tridentate fashion, generating a distorted CaCo3O4 cubane-type cluster. The Ca—μ3-O distances [2.429 (5)–2.572 (6) Å] are much longer than the Co—μ3—O bonds [1.895 (5)–1.941 (5) Å]. The CaII cation is also coordinated by five water molecules with Ca—O distances in the range 2.355 (6)–2.543 (6) Å. There are three additional uncoordinated water molecules in the asymmetric unit, the occupancy of which refined to 0.54 (3). In H2O (or D2O), the title complex hydrolyses to Ca2+ aq cations and [Co3(ida)3(μ2-OH)3(μ3-O)]2− anions

We examine serum level of galectin-3 in patients with bladder cancer. We used serum samples of 67 patients with urological diseases and classified these patients into bladder cancer group (n=43) and control group (n=24). Galectin-3 concentration was measured by ELISA (Human Galectin-3 Assay Kit, IBL). And we selected the patient with high serum galectin-3 concentration (Urothelial Carcinoma, G3, pT3a pN0M0), we performed immunohistochemical staining with the VECTASTAIN ABC (Avidin Biotinylated enzyme Complex) system. Median value of serum galectin-3 concentration was 1068 pg/ml (range 551-2028) in the cancer group vs 584 pg/ml (range 259-1262) in controls. Serum galectin-3 concentration of the bladder cancer patients was statistically higher than that of controls (p<0.0005). There was no apparent correlation in serum galectin-3 concentration with the clinico-pathological features such as stage and grade. Higher expression of galectin-3 was observed in bladder cancer tissue than in normal bladder tissue. We suggest the measurement of serum galectin-3 is useful for diagnosis of bladder cancer

Objectives : Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is known to play physiological and pathophysiological roles in the cardiovascular system, and MR activation directly damages these organs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of MR and 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) in the human penile corpus cavernosum. Methods : MR and 11β-HSD2 expression was assayed in human penile tissues, and also in human renal tissues as a positive control. Expressions of MR mRNA and 11β-HSD2 mRNA were evaluated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). MR and 11β-HSD2 were visually identified using immunofluorescence analysis. Results : MR mRNA expression in human penis was confirmed by RT-PCR. On quantitative RT-PCR analysis, 11β-HSD2 mRNA expression was detected at minimal levels in penile tissue. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed positive staining for MR and negative staining for 11β-HSD2 in smooth muscle cells of the corpus cavernosum. Conclusions : This study demonstrated the presence of MR and the absence of 11β-HSD2 in human penile corpus cavernosum. Considering that MR activation causes various organ damages, MR blockade in human penile corpus cavernosum may have therapeutic benefits. Investigations for the penile effects of MR activation have the potential to provide new treatment approaches for erectile dysfunction

Background: The theory of extravasated platelet aggregation in cancer lesions was recently introduced. We investigated the association of platelet aggregation in gastric cancer stroma with clinicopathological features, chemotherapeutic response, pathological response, and survival. Methods: The study comprised 78 patients with advanced gastric cancer who had undergone gastrectomy with or without combination of docetaxel, cisplatin and S-1 (DCS) as preoperative chemotherapy between 2005 and 2014. The patients were divided into two groups: patients who had received preoperative DCS therapy forming the p-DCS group and patients who had not received preoperative DCS therapy forming the control group. The 39 patients in the control group had received gastrectomy and postoperative chemotherapy of S-1 alone. Platelet aggregation in biopsy specimens before preoperative DCS therapy in the p-DCS group and at the time of diagnosis in the control group were evaluated using CD42b immunohistochemical staining. Results: Twenty-four patients in the p-DCS group and 19 in the control group were found to have platelet aggregation in their cancer stroma. Patients with histologically confirmed platelet aggregation had significantly higher rates of chemoresistance (58.3%) than those without platelet aggregation (20.0%) (P = 0.019). According to multivariate analysis, CD42b expression (odds ratio: 5.102, 95% confidence interval: 1.039-25.00, P = 0.045) was correlated with chemoresistance. CD42b expression and histological non-responder status were both significantly correlated with poor overall survival (OS) (P = 0.012, P = 0.016); however, RECIST was not correlated with OS. In the control group, CD42b expression was also significantly correlated with poor overall survival (OS) (P = 0.033). In the p-DCS group, according to multivariate analysis, male sex (hazard ratio: 0.281, 95% confidence interval: 0.093-0.846, P = 0.024) was correlated with good prognosis and CD42b expression (hazard ratio: 4.406, 95% confidence interval: 1.325-14.65, P = 0.016) with poor prognosis. Conclusions: This study suggests that platelets in gastric cancer stroma may create a favorable microenvironment for chemoresistance. CD42b immunohistochemical staining of biopsy specimens is a promising candidate for being a prognostic marker in patients with gastric cancer. © 2017 The Author(s)

Changes in levels of prostate-specific antigen and testosterone following discontinuation of long-term hormone therapy for non-metastatic prostate cancer

Introduction : We evaluated changes in levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and testosterone following discontinuation of long-term hormone therapy for non-metastatic prostate cancer. Patients and Methods : Treatment was discontinued in 31 patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer (clinical stage B-C) after≧5 years of hormone therapy, during which time PSA level had been maintained less than 0.5 ng/ml. PSA and testosterone levels were measured after discontinuation of therapy. PSA>4.0 ng/ml was defined as PSA relapse in this study. Results : Mean age at discontinuation of hormone therapy was 78.7 years (range, 66-90). Mean duration of follow-up after discontinuation of therapy was 25.5 months. PSA non-relapse rate was quite high (87.1%). 4 of the 31 patients showed PSA relapse, after 12-24 months. Testosterone level exceeded castration level (<1.0 ng/ml) in 3 patients, each of whom developed PSA relapse. Conclusions : During follow-up, the PSA relapse rate was relatively low. These results suggest that treatment may be safely discontinued in many prostate cancer patients. In addition, rate of testosterone recovery after treatment discontinuation may be associated with PSA relapse. When considered the adaptation of discontinued, or intermittent hormone therapy for aged people, these findings may be useful

Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with hepatocellular differentiation and one of the most common cancers in the world. This type of cancer is often diagnosed when the survival time is measured in months causing high death rates Method We enhanced the classification process presented in [3] by including 11 features of tissue changes (i.e., features related to fatty change, cytoplasm colors, cell clearness index, and stroma) and 10 features of trabecular (e.g., nuclei-cytoplasmic ratio, irregularity of sinusoid, and trabecular arrangements). Furthermore, we apply a mask obtained by the stroma segmentation before calculating the 13 types of nuclear and structural features such that those features are derived from hepatocytes only, thus generating in total 177 features. The experiments were performed on a collection of region-ofinterest (ROI) images extracted from HE stained whole slide images (WSI), consisting of 1054 ROIs of HCC biopsy samples (504 negatives and 550 positives) and 1076 ROIs of HCC surgically resected samples (533 negatives and 543 positives). In the process, we made some combinations on the sets of features and sets of training data from both biopsy and surgery samples. As for the classification, we used 5-fold cross validation support vector machine (SVM) with LibSVM as our library. Results The results of classification experiment are summarized in Conclusion The combination of nuclear, trabecular, and other tissue features enables improved classification rate in HCC detection using SVM. Even though the image characteristics are different in biopsy and surgically resected samples, the same classification system gives good performance in both samples. The HCC classification scheme introduced in this paper is implemented in the prototype "feature measurement software for liver biopsy, " and the probability of HCC is visualized for every ROI in the WSI. It will support pathologists in the HCC diagnosis along with the quantitative measurements of tissue morphology

Background: We assessed the change in LUTS after prostate brachytherapy to reveal factors for prolonged urination disorder. Materials and Methods: Four hundred and fourpatients received prostate brachytherapy at our institution and were followed-up for at least 2 years. We evaluated the correlation of mean IPSS changes and clinical factors. Using multivariate analysis, we also evaluated clinical factors with potential to delay IPSS resolution. Results: In cases with prostate volume more than 30 cm3, radiation dose to 90% of prostate volume (D90) more than 160 Gy, and radiation dose to 30% of the urethral volume (UD30) more than 240 Gy, mean IPSS levels were significantly higher, even 30 months after treatment. On multivariate analysis, baseline IPSS more than 8 points and D90 more than 160 Gy were significant predictors for delayed IPSS resolution. Conclusion: Our data suggest that higher baseline IPSS and higher D90 were predictors for prolonged urination disorder

Solitary adrenal metastasis from endometrial adenocarcinoma is extremely rare. We report herein the case of a laparoscopically resected solitary adrenal metastasis originating from endometrial adenocarcinoma. The patient was a 55-year-old woman who had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy for stage IIIc endometrial carcinoma, followed by 7 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy comprising carboplatin and paclitaxel. However, the patient developed an isolated right adrenal metastasis 15 months postoperatively. The solitary adrenal metastasis (diameter, 5.7 cm) was removed laparoscopically. The patient has now been in good health without recurrence for 5 years and 7 months after laparoscopic surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of solitary adrenal metastasis originating from endometrial adenocarcinoma that is controlled for the long term by successful laparoscopic resection
