The orbifold cohomology of moduli of genus 3 curves
In this work we study the additive orbifold cohomology of the moduli stack of
smooth genus g curves. We show that this problem reduces to investigating the
rational cohomology of moduli spaces of cyclic covers of curves where the genus
of the covering curve is g. Then we work out the case of genus g=3.
Furthermore, we determine the part of the orbifold cohomology of the
Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of genus 3 curves that

Are You Tampering With My Data?
We propose a novel approach towards adversarial attacks on neural networks
(NN), focusing on tampering the data used for training instead of generating
attacks on trained models. Our network-agnostic method creates a backdoor
during training which can be exploited at test time to force a neural network
to exhibit abnormal behaviour. We demonstrate on two widely used datasets
(CIFAR-10 and SVHN) that a universal modification of just one pixel per image
for all the images of a class in the training set is enough to corrupt the
training procedure of several state-of-the-art deep neural networks causing the
networks to misclassify any images to which the modification is applied. Our
aim is to bring to the attention of the machine learning community, the
possibility that even learning-based methods that are personally trained on
public datasets can be subject to attacks by a skillful adversary.Comment: 18 page
Inverse Raman Scattering in Femtosecond Broadband Transient Absorption Experiments
This chapter reports on one of the nonlinear spectral features, the inverse Raman scattering (IRS), observed upon the interaction of ultrafastâpulsed lasers in a Ramanâactive medium. Hereby, a comprehensive theoretical description of the IRS is exposed. Furthermore, the investigation carried out on synthetic eumelanin dispersions is addressed to show how the transient absorption measurements can be influenced by the IRS, if probing at energies close to Stokes and antiâStokes vibrational modes of the medium. A thorough analysis demonstrates that the IRS affects the sign of dynamics but not relaxation times. A specific kind of spectroscopy based on the IRS effect (ultrafast Raman loss spectroscopy) is eventually illustrated as valuable tool to characterize the structure of molecules and to investigate their dynamics during chemical reactions, even occurring at ultrafast timescales
Positive-unlabeled learning for open set domain adaptation
Open Set Domain Adaptation (OSDA) focuses on bridging the domain gap between a labeled source domain and an unlabeled target domain, while also rejecting target classes that are not present in the source as unknown. The challenges of this task are closely related to those of Positive-Unlabeled (PU) learning where it is essential to discriminate between positive (known) and negative (unknown) class samples in the unlabeled target data. With this newly discovered connection, we leverage the theoretical framework of PU learning for OSDA and, at the same time, we extend PU learning to tackle uneven data distributions. Our method combines domain adversarial learning with a new non-negative risk estimator for PU learning based on self-supervised sample reconstruction. With experiments on digit recognition and object classification, we validate our risk estimator and demonstrate that our approach allows reducing the domain gap without suffering from negative transfer
Shedding Light on Diatom Photonics by means of Digital Holography
Diatoms are among the dominant phytoplankters in the worl's ocean, and their
external silica investments, resembling artificial photonics crystal, are
expected to play an active role in light manipulation. Digital holography
allowed studying the interaction with light of Coscinodiscus wailesii cell wall
reconstructing the light confinement inside the cell cytoplasm, condition that
is hardly accessible via standard microscopy. The full characterization of the
propagated beam, in terms of quantitative phase and intensity, removed a
long-standing ambiguity about the origin of the light. The data were discussed
in the light of living cell behavior in response to their environment
What makes a workday meaningful? Evidence on the role of task significance, competence and subjective meaningful work
Purpose: The construct of meaningful work is a relevant topic for the managerial literature interested in job design, employeesâ motivation, and job performance. The current research seeks to improve our knowledge on meaningful work by exploring the processes by which a workday is experienced as meaningful. Design/methodology/approach: Adopting the lens of the Job Demands-Resources model and Self-Determination theory, we argue that work conditions and psychological conditions are associated with the experience of meaningful work on a daily basis. Moreover, we propose that the experience of meaningful work on a long-term basis (i.e. the evaluation of oneâs own work as holding significance per se) intensifies the associations between daily conditions and the experience of meaningful work. We collected data via an event-based longitudinal diary study for a total sample of NÂ =Â 114 employees from six organizations and NÂ =Â 545 observations. Findings: Results of the multilevel analysis showed that competence and task significance led to the experience of meaningful work during working days. Moreover, cross-level analyses revealed that these associations are stronger for employees who experience their work to be meaningful in the long-term. Originality/value: The novelty of the present study lies in highlighting the role of specific factors contributing to the experience of meaningful work during a workday. These findings help specify targets and organizational and individual dimensions to be addressed by managerial interventions to ensure employees' meaningful work experience

Upper-mantle flow beneath French Polynesia from shear wave splitting
International audienceUpper-mantle flow beneath the South Pacific is investigated by analysing shear wave splitting parameters at eight permanent long-period and broad-band seismic stations and 10 broad-band stations deployed in French Polynesia from 2001 to 2005 in the framework of the Polynesian Lithosphere and Upper Mantle Experiment (PLUME). Despite the small number of eventsand the rather poor backazimuthal coverage due to the geographical distribution of the natural seismicity, upper-mantle seismic anisotropy has been detected at all stations except at Tahiti where two permanent stations with 15 yr of data show an apparent isotropy. The median value of fast polarization azimuths (N67.5°W) is parallel to the present Pacific absolute platemotion direction in French Polynesia (APM: N67°W). This suggests that the observed SKS fast polarization directions result mainly from olivine crystal preferred orientations produced by deformation in the sublithospheric mantle due to viscous entrainment by the moving Pacific Plate and preserved in the lithosphere as the plate cools. However, analysis of individualmeasurements highlights variations of splitting parameters with event backazimuth that imply an actual upper-mantle structure more complex than a single anisotropic layer with horizontal fast axis. A forward approach shows that a two-layer structure of anisotropy beneath French Polynesia better explains the splitting observations than a single anisotropic layer. Second ordervariations in the measurements may also indicate the presence of small-scale lateral heterogeneities. The influence of plumes or fracture zones within the studied area does not appear to dominate the large-scale anisotropy pattern but may explain these second-order splitting variations across the network
Rethinking Resistance as Relational â Resisting Psychologization in Psychology: Lessons from CarreÌreâs Between Two Worlds
Psychology, and in particular mainstream positive psychology, is fuelled by discourses on resistance strategies, understood as the individual capacity to resist and adapt to negative and oppressive thoughts, circumstances, experiences, and social structures. This selfstrategy of resistance is evident in positive psychologyâs notions of resilience: grit, lifecrafting, and job-crafting behaviors, for example. While positive psychology would have us believe these strategies are associated with overcoming hardship and living a good life, they risk imbricating people in their own oppressions. In this paper, we engage in a reading of CarreÌreâs Between Two Worlds (original title Ouistreham) (2021), a movie featuring multiple examples of resistance. The movie shows how precarious workers enact self-strategies of resistance to fight for a decent and bearable life. They persevere despite ongoing hardships, seek joy amidst tragic life events, and find meaning in menial labor. However, resistance also appears as relational and political, and thus escapes and exceeds self-focused psychological categories of resistance. Resistance appears as the refusal to be understood solely in individual and individualizing ways â as a psychologized and knowable subject â and is characterized by relational, contextual, and political tactics. The movie profanes established positive psychologyâs individualist focus on resistance. This profanation of self-strategies of resistance affords an opportunity to rethink resistance beyond the individual and compels us to problematize the tendency to psychologize and individualize social phenomena. In doing so, our paper too resists the determination of psychological language (i.e., psychologization) and advances ideas for alternative resistances in, to, and of psychology
