    Real Exchange Rates, Preferences, and Incomplete Markets: Evidence, 1961-2001

    Many international macroeconomic models link the real exchange rate to a ratio of marginal utilities. We examine this link empirically, allowing the marginal utility of consumption to depend on government expenditure, real money balances, or external habit. We also consider two environments with incomplete asset markets; one with exogenously missing markets but an endogenous discount rate that anchors the distribution of wealth and one with endogenous market segmentation. Although none of these satisfies theoretical and over-identifying restrictions for every country, utility with external habit persistence provides the best match with real exchange rates for OECD countries between 1961 and 2001.real exchange rate, consumption, marginal utility

    Gene expression patterns following unilateral traumatic brain injury reveals a local pro-inflammatory and remote anti-inflammatory response.

    BackgroundTraumatic brain injury (TBI) results in irreversible damage at the site of impact and initiates cellular and molecular processes that lead to secondary neural injury in the surrounding tissue. We used microarray analysis to determine which genes, pathways and networks were significantly altered using a rat model of TBI. Adult rats received a unilateral controlled cortical impact (CCI) and were sacrificed 24 h post-injury. The ipsilateral hemi-brain tissue at the site of the injury, the corresponding contralateral hemi-brain tissue, and naïve (control) brain tissue were used for microarray analysis. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) software was used to identify molecular pathways and networks that were associated with the altered gene expression in brain tissues following TBI.ResultsInspection of the top fifteen biological functions in IPA associated with TBI in the ipsilateral tissues revealed that all had an inflammatory component. IPA analysis also indicated that inflammatory genes were altered on the contralateral side, but many of the genes were inversely expressed compared to the ipsilateral side. The contralateral gene expression pattern suggests a remote anti-inflammatory molecular response. We created a network of the inversely expressed common (i.e., same gene changed on both sides of the brain) inflammatory response (IR) genes and those IR genes included in pathways and networks identified by IPA that changed on only one side. We ranked the genes by the number of direct connections each had in the network, creating a gene interaction hierarchy (GIH). Two well characterized signaling pathways, toll-like receptor/NF-kappaB signaling and JAK/STAT signaling, were prominent in our GIH.ConclusionsBioinformatic analysis of microarray data following TBI identified key molecular pathways and networks associated with neural injury following TBI. The GIH created here provides a starting point for investigating therapeutic targets in a ranked order that is somewhat different than what has been presented previously. In addition to being a vehicle for identifying potential targets for post-TBI therapeutic strategies, our findings can also provide a context for evaluating the potential of therapeutic agents currently in development

    The work of Paulo Freire is associated with themes of oppression and liberation, and his critical pedagogy is visionary in its attempts to bring about social transformation. Freire has created a theory of education that embeds these issues within social relations that center around both ideological and material domination. In this review essay, Sue Jackson explores three books: Freire’s final work Pedagogy of Indignation; Cesar Augusto Rossatto’s Engaging Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of Possibility, which attempts to engage Freire’s pedagogy of possibility; and C.A. Bowers and Frederique Apffel-Marglin’s edited collection Re-thinking Freire, which asks readers to reconsider Freire’s work in light of globalization and environmental crises. Jackson questions the extent to which Freire’s pedagogical approaches are useful to educators as well as to “the oppressed,” and whether challenges to re-think Freire can lead to new kinds of critical pedagogies

    A Doubling Technique for the Power Method Transformations

    Power method polynomials are used for simulating non-normal distributions with specified product moments or L-moments. The power method is capable of producing distributions with extreme values of skew (L-skew) and kurtosis (L-kurtosis). However, these distributions can be extremely peaked and thus not representative of real-world data. To obviate this problem, two families of distributions are introduced based on a doubling technique with symmetric standard normal and logistic power method distributions. The primary focus of the methodology is in the context of L-moment theory. As such, L-moment based systems of equations are derived for simulating univariate and multivariate non-normal distributions with specified values of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation. Evaluation of the proposed doubling technique indicates that estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are superior to conventional product-moments in terms of relative bias and relative efficiency when extreme non-normal distributions are of concern

    This paper characterizes the conventional moment-based Schmeiser-Deutsch (S-D) class of distributions through the method of L-moments. The system can be used in a variety of settings such as simulation or modeling various processes. A procedure is also described for simulating S-D distributions with specified L-moments and L-correlations. The Monte Carlo results presented in this study indicate that the estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation associated with the S-D class of distributions are substantially superior to their corresponding conventional product-moment estimators in terms of relative bias—most notably when sample sizes are small

    An L-Moment Based Characterization of the Family of Dagum Distributions

    This paper introduces a method for simulating univariate and multivariate Dagum distributions through the method of L-moments and L-correlation. A method is developed for characterizing non-normal Dagum distributions with controlled degrees of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of contexts such as statistical modeling (e.g., income distribution, personal wealth distributions, etc.) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that -moment-based Dagum distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of estimation and distribution fitting. Evaluation of the proposed method also demonstrates that the estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are substantially superior to their conventional product-moment based counterparts of skew, kurtosis, and Pearson correlation in terms of relative bias and relative efficiency–most notably in the context of heavy-tailed distributions

    This paper derives the Burr Type III and Type XII family of distributions in the contexts of univariate -moments and the - correlations. Included is the development of a procedure for specifying nonnormal distributions with controlled degrees of -skew, -kurtosis, and -correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as statistical modeling (e.g., forestry, fracture roughness, life testing, operational risk, etc.) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that -moment-based Burr distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of estimation and distribution fitting.     Uniform-based and triangular-based third-order power method distributions using a doubling technique distributions

    Power method (PM) polynomials have been used for simulating non-normal distributions in a variety of settings such as toxicology research, price risk, business-cycle features, microarray analysis, computer adaptive testing, and structural equation modeling. A majority of the applications associated with the PM polynomials are based on the method of matching conventional moments (e.g., skew and kurtosis). However, estimators of skew and kurtosis can be (a) substantially biased, (b) highly dispersed, or (c) influenced by outliers. To address this limitation, two families of third-order PM distributions are developed through the method of -moments (Hosking, 1990) using a doubling technique (Morgenthaler & Tukey, 2000) and contrasted with the method of moments in the contexts of estimation of parameters. The methodology is based on simulating uniform- and triangular-based third-order PM distributions with specified values of -skew and - kurtosis. Monte Carlo simulation results indicate that the estimators based on method of Lmoments are superior to their conventional moment-based counterparts
