    No full text
This paper, we presented a novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensor that gives an absolute measurement of the pressure and is wavelength encoded to avoid problems with scale resetting and signal intensity variation that plague the intensity and phase modulated pressure sensors.RG 9/9

    Continuous cardiac output monitoring system

    No full text
A technique of continuous cardiac output (CO) measurement without injection of foreign fluids is discussed in this report. The cardiac output is obtained by multiplying the instantaneous cross-sectional area of the blood vessel with the blood flow velocity. The hardware and probes used for real time CO measurements are discussed. This technique of real time cardiac monitoring has been proven experimentally to be feasible. Accurate and linear results have been obtained.ARC 4/9

A new dual-fibre optic catheter for in vivo blood flow measure blood flow in both the forward (towards the catheter tip) and reverse (away from the catheter tip) flow directions at flow rates ranging from stationary (0 cm/s) to 150 cm/s.RP 25/9

Research and development of wideband photonic components

    No full text
It is known that the high performance radars and communication systems require the use of phased array antenna (PAA) for beam steering purpose. In order to overcome some squint problems, photonic true-time-delay (TTD) units are usually used to keep the stable beamforming directions at different microwave frequencies in the PAA systems. This is because photonic TTD units are promising technique to form wideband phased array beam with the advantages of low loss, small size, lightweight and immunity to electromagnetic interference in photonic phase shifter network. Apart from the TTD units, the formation of PAA also requires the usage of fiber grating prism beamsteerer, wide wavelength tunable lasers, wideband power amplifiers and photodetectors with precise specifications. The main objective of this project is to develop a photonic phase shifter network covering the frequency range of 6 to 18 GHz for PAA beam scanning. Our task of this project is to ensure the development of various critical component technologies including circuits for microwave/photonic conversion, optical TTD phase shifters and trans-impedance amplifiers for the photodetectors to satisfy the requirement
