Schiff Theorem and the Electric Dipole Moments of Hydrogen-Like Atoms
The Schiff theorem is revisited in this work and the residual - and
-odd electron--nucleus interaction, after the shielding takes effect, is
completely specified. An application is made to the electric dipole moments of
hydrogen-like atoms, whose qualitative features and systematics have important

Atomic Electric Dipole Moments: The Schiff Theorem and Its Corrections
Searches for the permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of diamagnetic
atoms provide powerful probes of CP-violating hadronic and semileptonic
interactions. The theoretical interpretation of such experiments, however,
requires careful implementation of a well-known theorem by Schiff that implies
a vanishing net EDM for an atom built entirely from point-like, nonrelativistic
constituents that interact only electrostatically. Any experimental observation
of a nonzero atomic EDM would result from corrections to the point-like,
nonrelativistic, electrostatic assumption. We reformulate Schiff's theorem at
the operator level and delineate the electronic and nuclear operators whose
atomic matrix elements generate corrections to "Schiff screening". We obtain a
form for the operator responsible for the leading correction associated with
finite nuclear size -- the so-called "Schiff moment" operator -- and observe
that it differs from the corresponding operator used in previous Schiff moment
computations. We show that the more general Schiff moment operator reduces to
the previously employed operator only under certain approximations that are not
generally justified. We also identify other corrections to Schiff screening
that may not be included properly in previous theoretical treatments. We
discuss practical considerations for obtaining a complete computation of

Chiral two-pion exchange and proton-proton partial-wave analysis
The chiral two-pion exchange component of the long-range pp interaction is
studied in an energy-dependent partial-wave analysis. We demonstrate its
presence and importance, and determine the chiral parameters c_i (i=1,3,4). The
values agree well with those obtained from pion-nucleon amplitudes.Comment: 13 pages, no figure
On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra Ions
As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one
single trapped Ra ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with
on-line produced short-lived Ra ions. The isotope shift of
the 6\,^2D\,-\,7\,^2P and
6\,^2D\,-\,7\,^2P transitions and the hyperfine structure
constant of the 7\,^2S and 6\,^2D states in Ra
were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory.
A lower limit of ms for the lifetime of the metastable

Stationary solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation: II. Case of attractive nonlinearity
All stationary solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger
equation under box or periodic boundary conditions are presented in analytic
form for the case of attractive nonlinearity. A companion paper has treated the
repulsive case. Our solutions take the form of bounded, quantized, stationary
trains of bright solitons. Among them are two uniquely nonlinear classes of
nodeless solutions, whose properties and physical meaning are discussed in
detail. The full set of symmetry-breaking stationary states are described by
the character tables from the theory of point groups. We make
experimental predictions for the Bose-Einstein condensate and show that, though
these are the analog of some of the simplest problems in linear quantum

Periodically-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates: a superfluid with an anisotropic and variable critical velocity
Two intersecting laser beams can produce a spatially-periodic coupling
between two components of an atomic gas and thereby modify the dispersion
relation of the gas according to a dressed-state formalism. Properties of a
Bose-Einstein condensate of such a gas are strongly affected by this
modification. A Bogoliubov transformation is presented which accounts for
interparticle interactions to obtain the quasiparticle excitation spectrum in
such a condensate. The Landau critical velocity is found to be anisotropic and
can be widely tuned by varying properties of the dressing laser beams.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
A microscopic quantum dynamics approach to the dilute condensed Bose gas
We derive quantum evolution equations for the dynamics of dilute condensed
Bose gases. The approach contains, at different orders of approximation, for
cases close to equilibrium, the Gross Pitaevskii equation and the first order
Hartree Fock Bogoliubov theory. The proposed approach is also suited for the
description of the dynamics of condensed gases which are far away from
equilibrium. As an example the scattering of two Bose condensates is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
First Test of Lorentz Invariance in the Weak Decay of Polarized Nuclei
A new test of Lorentz invariance in the weak interactions has been made by
searching for variations in the decay rate of spin-polarized 20Na nuclei. This
test is unique to Gamow-Teller transitions, as was shown in the framework of a
recently developed theory that assumes a Lorentz symmetry breaking background
field of tensor nature. The nuclear spins were polarized in the up and down
direction, putting a limit on the amplitude of sidereal variations of the form
|(\Gamma_{up} - \Gamma_{down})| / (\Gamma_{up} + \Gamma_{down}) < 3 * 10^{-3}.
This measurement shows a possible route toward a more detailed testing of
Lorentz symmetry in weak interactions.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
