    What a discursive understanding of interprofessional team meetings might reveal: an exploration of intellectual (learning) disability managers' performances.

    Clinical and academic understandings of interprofessional working are focused mainly on individual factors such as knowledge about different professional roles, and organisational opportunities for interprofessional working (IPW). Less research has examined what happens between people at an interactional level, that is, how interprofessional working is conducted in everyday face-to-face interactions in clinical practice. The current paper proposes a discursive framework for understanding what constitutes IPW in interprofessional meetings at this interactional level. Clinical effectiveness meetings held in intellectual (learning) disability services were used as an example site for IPW. The analysis explored how agenda change points were negotiated, appropriate as agenda change points require collaboration (or agreement) between practitioners to progress to the next point The study found changes in agenda points were accomplished by practitioners conjointly through using discursive strategies including closing questions, and resources such as professional identity and laughter. The agenda provided a frame for the institutional order of the meetings, invoking a trajectory towards timely completion. However, this institutional order was at times subordinated to an 'order of concern', which seemed to enable challenges by managers to the meeting Chair and the agenda that demonstrated adherence not only to the procedural nature of the meetings, but also to the needs of service users and the services discussed. We suggest discursive strategies, resources, and both institutional orders, and order of concerns might provide a framework for developing future training and research, that is able to illuminate how IPW might be enacted in face-to-face team meetings

    Pf7: an open dataset of Plasmodium falciparum genome variation in 20,000 worldwide samples

    We describe the MalariaGEN Pf7 data resource, the seventh release of Plasmodium falciparum genome variation data from the MalariaGEN network. It comprises over 20,000 samples from 82 partner studies in 33 countries, including several malaria endemic regions that were previously underrepresented. For the first time we include dried blood spot samples that were sequenced after selective whole genome amplification, necessitating new methods to genotype copy number variations. We identify a large number of newly emerging crt mutations in parts of Southeast Asia, and show examples of heterogeneities in patterns of drug resistance within Africa and within the Indian subcontinent. We describe the profile of variations in the C-terminal of the csp gene and relate this to the sequence used in the RTS,S and R21 malaria vaccines. Pf7 provides high-quality data on genotype calls for 6 million SNPs and short indels, analysis of large deletions that cause failure of rapid diagnostic tests, and systematic characterisation of six major drug resistance loci, all of which can be freely downloaded from the MalariaGEN website

    MalariaGEN is a data-sharing network that enables groups around the world to work together on the genomic epidemiology of malaria. Here we describe a new release of curated genome variation data on 7,000 Plasmodium falciparum samples from MalariaGEN partner studies in 28 malaria-endemic countries. High-quality genotype calls on 3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and short indels were produced using a standardised analysis pipeline. Copy number variants associated with drug resistance and structural variants that cause failure of rapid diagnostic tests were also analysed.  Almost all samples showed genetic evidence of resistance to at least one antimalarial drug, and some samples from Southeast Asia carried markers of resistance to six commonly-used drugs. Genes expressed during the mosquito stage of the parasite life-cycle are prominent among loci that show strong geographic differentiation. By continuing to enlarge this open data resource we aim to facilitate research into the evolutionary processes affecting malaria control and to accelerate development of the surveillance toolkit required for malaria elimination

    The psychic costs of tax compliance: nature and implications for policy

    A major principle of tax law is that taxes should be equitable in the demands that they place upon the section of the population at which they are aimed. It has been increasingly recognised that the costs incurred over and above the revenue paid to the authorities, as a consequence of compliance with tax law are the significant way in which inequity in the application of taxes comes about. Strong economic cases have been made for the inclusion of such compliance costs as an argument in the tax policy function. Compliance costs have been regarded as having three components: financial, time and "psychic". The financial and time components have been researched for more than fifty years. However, as the state of knowledge about these components of compliance costs has grown so the psychological component has been increasingly neglected. This neglect does not arise from a suggestion that "psychic" costs are unimportant, but rather from a pessimism about the practical means available for their measurement. From an examination of the fiscal literature on "psychic" costs two main factors emerge: an anxiety factor and a resentment factor. Both of these factors constitute negative emotional responses to the fiscal environment of the individual taxpayer. Furthermore, this examination suggests that the application of psychological models and psychological scaling and measurement techniques can go a considerable way toward elaborating the nature of "psychic" costs

    Are ontological meanings somehow sacrosanct in arguments concerning psychology – particularly those scored by discursive accounts of human being? Or is the purposeful deferment of ontological concerns in discursive psychology (DP) another instance of method-fetishism (Koch, 1981)? Shotter’s (1995) understanding of joint action and Chouliaraki’s (2002) critical realist account of social action combine to support an alternate position to the predominant discursive psychological approach informed by epistemological constructionism (DPEC). The DPEC position is here contrasted with a discursive psychological approach informed by ontological constructionism (DPOC). Via this distinction, a path for future discursive psychological studies is charted, one which values understanding the kinds of practical-moral knowledges (Shotter, 1993) available to people in accounting for themselves and their actions as psychosocial agents. Contrary to claims that the DPEC/DPOC distinction is supercilious (Edley, 2001) or oxymoronic (Drewery, 2000), the importance of debating what ontology can mean for psychology is herein seen as central to the pursuit of personal, relational and collective wellness in contemporary life
