This report investigates the rural inter-communal conflict as a threat to community livelihood in Jonglei State, one of the ten states in South Sudan. Jonglei State has a long history of unrest, which has also affected other parts of the country. Cattle raiding and conflict have manifested in Jonglei State and the surrounding communities for many years. Many people have lost their lives, and livestock losses have been abundant. It is vital that local government understands and contextualises these challenges so that appropriate interventions may be developed. This study proposes to provide a brief historical background on the evolution of inter-communal conflict in Jonglei. There have been recent changes in the security situation and increased access to weapons. Advanced weaponry has also led to a rise in insecurity and increases in the number and scale of cattle raids. Political tensions and political instability have also emerged. The political situation is unstable and political factions are in constant disagreement. Furthermore, there are limited economic opportunities there is also limited access to natural resources such as water and grazing land for cattle. Climate conditions and migration patterns are also discussed and explained. The cross sectional descriptive survey was used in this study. Various recommendations flowing from the results of the study are proposed in the final chapter. If adopted, these recommendations could enable the Government of South Sudan and the residents of Jonglei to overcome inter-communal conflict

Integrating knowledge management with project management for project success

This paper aims to study the improvement of project success in organizations by integrating knowledge management strategies with project management practices in a typical project lifecycle.  According to the Standish Group’s Chaos Report for 2009, only 32% of all surveyed projects are considered to be successful and are delivered on time, on budget, with the required features and functions. This could be an indication that project management practitioners have not fully acquired and transferred knowledge learned from past projects to ensure a higher success rate for current and future projects.  Knowledge management is an emerging discipline and practice in organizations. This paper proposes an integrated model that combines knowledge management with project management to improve project success and thus contribute towards competitiveness and sustainability in organizations. &nbsp

Rome, Rome! thou art no moreAs thou hast been!On thy seven hills of yoreThous sat\u27st a Queen.Thou had\u27st thy triumphs then,Purpling the street, Princes and sceptered men Bowed at thy feet.Rome, Rome! thou art no more As thou hast been! No, no, no more as thou hast been! Rome! thine imperial brownever shall rise:What hast thou left thee now?Thou hast thy skies!Blue, deeply blue, they are,Gloriously bright!Veiling thy wastes areaWith colored light.Rome, Rome, &c. Thou hast the sunset\u27s glow,Rome, for thy dower,Flushing tall cypress bough,Temple and tower! And all sweet sounds are thine,Lovely to hear, While night, o\u27er tomb and shrine,Rests darkly clear.Rome, Rome, &c. Many a solemn hymn,By starlight sung,Sweeps through the arches dim,Thy wrecks among. Many a flute\u27s low swell,On thy soft airLingers, and loves to dwellWith summer there.Rome, Rome &c. Students2019; Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skills to English Foreign Language Students at Three Ethiopian Universities

he listening skill plays a decisive role in our day-today communication Hedge 2000 found that up to 45 of one s communication time is spent on listening activities while Chen 2011 estimates that 50 of an adult s communication consists of listening It is thus clear that one spends much more time on listening communication activities than on the rest of the language skills i e reading writing and speaking The fact that people spend so much time on listening however does not imply that they are good listeners It is rather an indication of how important it is that their listening skills should be developed and that time should be spent on the teaching of this important communication skill to ensure effective communication The role that listening plays in the acquisition of a second or foreign language started to gain attention when the Communicative Language Teaching methodology which emphasised the need of teaching listening for effective oral communication Goh 2008 became popular in language teaching in the 1970s Although much ground-breaking work on the teaching of listening in second and foreign languages has been done it is still one of the skills that receive little attention in many classes which is a challenge for learners in the classroom and beyond Vandergrift Goh 201

African American police officers are concerned about the racial profiling of communities of color by their own agencies

In the wake of the many tragic police shootings of young African-American men in recent years, racial profiling by police has emerged as a significant issue within communities of color. But how is this perceived by African-American police officers? In new survey research Lieutenant Charles P. Wilson, Shirley A. Wilson , and Malane Thou find that a majority of these officers believe that racial profiling not only exists, but that it is condoned by agency supervisors. They also find that these officers feel that their presence was important when dealing with communities of color. They argue that the service of African American police officers has tremendous value, both to the agencies that employ them and to the citizens of their communities

Ferulic acid derivatives and avenanthramides modulate endothelial function through maintenance of nitric oxide balance in huvec cells

Wholegrain oats contain a variety of phenolic compounds thought to help maintain healthy vascular function, through the maintenance of local levels of the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO). Thus, the full molecular mechanisms involved are not yet clear. With this work we aim to understand the possible cellular mechanisms by which avenanthramides and ferulic acid derivatives, present in oats, may help maintain a healthy vascular function through the modulation of the NO pathway. Primary Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) were exposed to ferulic acid, isoferulic acid, hydroferulic acid, ferulic acid 4-O-glucuronide, isoferulic acid 3-O-sulfate, dihydroferulic acid 4-O-glucuronide, avenanthramide A, avenanthramide B and avenanthramide C (1 µM) or vehicle (methanol) for 24 h. Apocynin and Nω-Nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) were additionally included as controls. NO and cyclic GMP (cGMP) levels, superoxide production and the activation of the Akt1/eNOS pathway were assessed. The statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA followed by a Tukey post-hoc t-test. Apocynin and all phenolic compounds increased NO levels in HUVEC cells (increased DAF2-DA fluorescence and cGMP), and significantly reduced superoxide levels. Protein expression results highlighted an increase in the Akt1 activation state, and increased eNOS expression. Overall, our results indicated that the glucuronide metabolites do not enhance NO production through the Akt1/eNOS pathway, thus all compounds tested are able to reduce NO degradation through reduced superoxide formation

Laser-Induced Silver Nanoparticles on Titanium Oxide for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue

    Get PDF
Silver nanoparticles doped on titanium oxide (TiO2) were produced by laser-liquid interaction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in isopropanol. Characteristics of Ag/TiO2 (Ag doped TiO2) nanoparticles produced by the methods presented in this article were investigated by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and UV-Vis. From the UV-Vis measurements, the absorption of visible light of the Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts was improved (additional absorption at longer wavelength in visible light region) obviously. The photocatalytic efficiency of Ag/TiO2 was tested by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. A maximum of 82.3% MB degradation is achieved by 2.0 wt% Ag/TiO2 photocatalyst under 2 h illumination with a halogen lamp

Surface charge on chitosan/cellulose nanowhiskers composite via functionalized and untreated carbon nanotube

Improvement in chitosan (CS) was achieved by solution casting using cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to synthesize CS/CNW functionalized/treated MWCNTs (CS/CNWs/f-MWCNTs) and CS/CNW untreated MWCNTs (CS/CNWs/Un-MWCNTs) nanocomposite films. A comparison between effects of f-MWCNTs and Un-MWCNTs on CS/CNWs matrix have been studied with respect to change in their physical and mechanical properties. The surface morphology, chemical composition, mechanical properties and temperature decomposition of CS/CNWs/f-MWCNTs and CS/CNW/Un-MWCNTs nanocomposite films were characterized by Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy (EDS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). FESEM has shown that f-MWCNTs and Un-MWCNTs were well dispersed in CS/CNWs structure. Decrease in film ductility was observed with addition of Un-MWCNTs or f-MWCNTs. Moreover, Tensile strength (TS) and Young's modulus (YM) were increased with f-MWCNTs and seemed to be decreased in case of Un-MWCNTs. However, a decrease in elongation at break (EB) has experienced with addition of f-MWCNTs and Un-MWCNTs. Furthermore, thermal stability of chitosan composites presented a delay or prevention from degradation of CS/CNWs due to the strong interactions. Such modification in chitosan can improve its mechanical and surface properties. Hence, chitosan derived composites could achieve more applicability in packaging, medicinal and environmental applications
