Frequency addressable beams for land mobile communications
Satellites used for mobile communications need to serve large numbers of small, low cost terminals. The most important parameters affecting the capacity of such systems are the satellite equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) and gain to noise temperature ratio (G/T) and available bandwidth. Satellites using frequency addressed beams provide high EIRP and G/T with high-gain antenna beams that also permit frequency reuse over the composite coverage area. Frequency addressing is easy to implement and compatible with low-cost terminals and offers higher capacity than alternative approaches

Blazar Flaring Patterns (B-FlaP): Classifying Blazar Candidates of Uncertain type in the third Fermi-LAT catalog by Artificial Neural Networks
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is currently the most important facility
for investigating the GeV -ray sky. With Fermi LAT more than three
thousand -ray sources have been discovered so far. 1144 () of
the sources are active galaxies of the blazar class, and 573 () are
listed as Blazar Candidate of Uncertain type (BCU), or sources without a
conclusive classification. We use the Empirical Cumulative Distribution
Functions (ECDF) and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for a fast method of
screening and classification for BCUs based on data collected at -ray
energies only, when rigorous multiwavelength analysis is not available. Based
on our method, we classify 342 BCUs as BL Lacs and 154 as FSRQs, while 77
objects remain uncertain. Moreover, radio analysis and direct observations in
ground-based optical observatories are used as counterparts to the statistical
classifications to validate the method. This approach is of interest because of
the increasing number of unclassified sources in Fermi catalogs and because
blazars and in particular their subclass High Synchrotron Peak (HSP) objects
are the main targets of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication on MNRA
Active controls for ride smoothing
Active controls technology offers great promise for significantly smoothing the ride, and thus improving public and air carrier acceptance, of certain types of transport aircraft. Recent findings which support this promise are presented in the following three pertinent areas: (1) Ride quality versus degree of traveler satisfaction; (2) significant findings from a feasibility study of a ride smoothing system; and (3) potential ride problems identified for several advanced transport concepts
Quantification of neurodegeneration by measurement of brain-specific proteins
Quantification of neurodegeneration in animal models is typically assessed by time-consuming and observer-dependent immunocytochemistry. This study aimed to investigate if newly developed ELISA techniques could provide an observer-independent, cost-effective and time-saving tool for this purpose. Neurofilament heavy chain (NfH(SM135)), astrocytic glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S100B and ferritin, markers of axonal loss, gliosis, astrocyte activation and microglial activation, respectively, were quantified in the spinal cord homogenates of mice with chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE, n=8) and controls (n=7). Levels of GFAP were found to be threefold elevated in CREAE (13 ng/mg protein) when compared to control animals (4.5 ng/mg protein, p<0.001). The inverse was observed for NfH(SM135) (21 ng/mg protein vs. 63 ng/mg protein, p<0.001), ferritin (542 ng/mg protein vs. 858 ng/mg protein, p<0.001) and S100B (786 ng/mg protein vs. 2080 ng/mg protein, N.S.). These findings were confirmed by immunocytochemistry, which demonstrated intense staining for GFAP and decreased staining for NfH(SM135) in CREAE compared to control animals. These findings indicate that axonal loss and gliosis can be estimated biochemically using the newly developed ELISA assays for NfH(SM135) and GFAP. These assays may facilitate the quantification of pathological features involved in neurodegeneration
Near-Infrared Photometry of the High-Redshift Quasar RDJ030117+002025: Evidence for a Massive Starburst at z=5.5
With a redshift of z=5.5 and an optical blue magnitude M_B ~ -24.2 mag (~4.5
10^12 L_sun), RDJ030117+002025 is the most distant optically faint (M_B > -26
mag) quasar known. MAMBO continuum observations at lambda=1.2 mm (185
micrometer rest-frame) showed that this quasar has a far-IR luminosity
comparable to its optical luminosity. We present near-infrared J- and K-band
photometry obtained with NIRC on the Keck I telescope, tracing the slope of the
rest frame UV spectrum of this quasar. The observed spectral index is close to
the value of alpha_nu ~ -0.44 measured in composite spectra of optically-bright
SDSS quasars. It thus appears that the quasar does not suffer from strong dust
extinction, which further implies that its low rest-frame UV luminosity is due
to an intrinsically-faint AGN. The FIR to optical luminosity ratio is then much
larger than that observed for the more luminous quasars, supporting the
suggestion that the FIR emission is not powered by the AGN but by a massive
