    Quantifying the Resolution of a Template after Image Registration

    In many image processing applications (e.g. computational anatomy) a groupwise registration is performed on a sample of images and a template image is simultaneously generated. From the template alone it is in general unclear to which extent the registered images are still misaligned, which means that some regions of the template represent the structural features in the sample images less reliably than others. In a sense, the template exhibits a lower resolution there. Guided by characteristic examples of misaligned image features in one dimension, we develop a visual measure to quantify the resolution at each location of a template which is based on the observation that misalignments between the registered sample images are reduced by smoothing with the strength of the smoothing being related to the magnitude of the misalignment. Finally the resulting resolution measure is applied to example datasets in two and three dimensions.     A simulation framework for predicting process-induced distortions for precise manufacturing of aerospace thermoset composites

    The choice of a suitable material model to simulate process induced distortions is important in order to achieve a right first time approach in the design of new moulds. This work investigates the ability of the Cure Hardening Instantaneously Linear Elastic (CHILE) model and a linear viscoelastic material model to predict process induced distortions of an aerospace composite frame. The material models were coupled with a cure kinetics model and a chemical shrinkage model in order to capture the multi-physics phenomena that take place during the curing process. The modelling of the viscoelastic behaviour of the resin is performed with the use of a generalized Maxwell model. A novel methodology is applied for shifting the relaxation times of the composite based on its temperature and degree of cure. It is shown that the viscoelastic model more accurately predicts the measured distortions due to its ability to account for stress relaxation

    Holy anorexia: Eating disorders symptomatology and religiosity among Muslim women in the United Arab Emirates

    © 2017 Elsevier B.V. There is a substantial body of literature reporting a negative association between religiosity and psychiatric symptoms. In the context of eating disorders, however, this relationship appears to be reversed. The few studies exploring the relationship between religiosity and eating disorders have mostly focused on the Judeo-Christian religious traditions in Western nations. The present study examines this relationship among Muslim college women from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). All participants (N = 1069) independently completed the religious commitment inventory (RCI-10) and the eating attitudes test (EAT-26). As hypothesised, there was a positive association between religiosity and eating disorders symptoms. Furthermore, those scoring above the EAT-26 cut-off reported significantly greater levels of religiosity. These findings suggest that heightened religiosity among young Emirati women may represent a vulnerability factor for eating disorders. Preventative initiatives in the UAE should consider focusing on religiosity

    Reducing lead time risk through multiple sourcing: the case of stochastic demand and variable lead time

    This paper studies a buyer sourcing a product from multiple suppliers under stochastic demand. The buyer uses a (Q, s) continuous review, reorder point, order quantity inventory control system to determine the size and timing of orders. Lead time is assumed to be deterministic and to vary linearly with the lot size, wherefore lead time and the associated stockout risk may be influenced by varying the lot size and the number of contracted suppliers. This paper presents mathematical models for a multiple supplier single buyer integrated inventory problem with stochastic demand and variable lead time and studies the impact of the delivery structure on the risk of incurring a stockout during lead time

    Developing cancer warning statements for alcoholic beverages

    Background: There is growing evidence of the increased cancer risk associated with alcohol consumption, but this is not well understood by the general public. This study investigated the acceptability among drinkers of cancer warning statements for alcoholic beverages. Methods: Six focus groups were conducted with Australian drinkers to develop a series of cancer-related warning statements for alcohol products. Eleven cancer warning statements and one general health warning statement were subsequently tested on 2,168 drinkers via an online survey. The statements varied by message frame (positive vs negative), cancer reference (general vs specific), and the way causality was communicated (‘increases risk of cancer’ vs ‘can cause cancer’). Results: Overall, responses to the cancer statements were neutral to favorable, indicating that they are unlikely to encounter high levels of negative reaction from the community if introduced on alcoholic beverages. Females, younger respondents, and those with higher levels of education generally found the statements to be more believable, convincing, and personally relevant. Positively framed messages, those referring to specific forms of cancer, and those using ‘increases risk of cancer’ performed better than negatively framed messages, those referring to cancer in general, and those using the term ‘can cause cancer’. Conclusion: Cancer warning statements on alcoholic beverages constitute a potential means of increasing awareness about the relationship between alcohol consumption and cancer risk

    Borderline hypertension was the topic of one of the “Hypertension seminars” arranged by the Hypertension Section at the Östra Hospital, GÖteborg, Sweden. On that occasion Professor Stevo Julius, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, was an invited guest. During the seminar, various aspects of borderline hypertension were discussed, e.g. the natural history, hemodynamics and management of this condition.     Expanded oxygen minimum zones during the late Paleocene-early Eocene:Hints from multiproxy comparison and ocean modeling

    Anthropogenic warming could well drive depletion of oceanic oxygen in the future. Important insight into the relationship between de-oxygenation and warming can be gleaned from the geological record, but evidence is limited because few ocean oxygenation records are available for past greenhouse climate conditions. We use I/Ca in benthic foraminifera to reconstruct late Paleocene through early Eocene bottom and pore-water redox conditions in the South Atlantic and Southern Indian Oceans, and compare our results with those derived from Mn speciation and the Ce anomaly in fish teeth. We conclude that waters with lower oxygen concentrations were widespread at intermediate depths (1.5-2 km), whereas bottom waters were more oxygenated at the deepest site, in the Southeast Atlantic Ocean (>3 km). Epifaunal benthic foraminiferal I/Ca values were higher in the late Paleocene, especially at low oxygen sites, than at well-oxygenated modern sites, indicate higher seawater total iodine concentrations in the late Paleocene than today. The proxy-based bottom water oxygenation pattern agrees with the site-to-site O2 gradient as simulated in a comprehensive climate model (CCSM3), but the simulated absolute dissolved O2 values are low (<~35 µmol/kg), while higher O2 values (~60-100 µmol/kg) were obtained in an Earth system model (cGENIE). Multi-proxy data together with improvements in boundary conditions and model parameterization are necessary if the details of past oceanographic oxygenation are to be resolved
