Logics for Unranked Trees: An Overview
Labeled unranked trees are used as a model of XML documents, and logical
languages for them have been studied actively over the past several years. Such
logics have different purposes: some are better suited for extracting data,
some for expressing navigational properties, and some make it easy to relate
complex properties of trees to the existence of tree automata for those
properties. Furthermore, logics differ significantly in their model-checking
properties, their automata models, and their behavior on ordered and unordered

The emergence of international food safety standards and guidelines: understanding the current landscape through a historical approach
Following the Second World War, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) teamed up to construct an International Codex Alimentarius (or 'food code') which emerged in 1963. The Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) was charged with the task of developing microbial hygiene standards, although it found itself embroiled in debate with the WHO over the nature these standards should take. The WHO was increasingly relying upon the input of biometricians and especially the International Commission on Microbial Specifications for Foods (ICMSF) which had developed statistical sampling plans for determining the microbial counts in the final end products. The CCFH, however, was initially more focused on a qualitative approach which looked at the entire food production system and developed codes of practice as well as more descriptive end-product specifications which the WHO argued were 'not scientifically correct'. Drawing upon historical archival material (correspondence and reports) from the WHO and FAO, this article examines this debate over microbial hygiene standards and suggests that there are many lessons from history which could shed light upon current debates and efforts in international food safety management systems and approaches
Modeling and Simulation of Storm Surge on Staten Island to Understand Inundation Mitigation Strategies
Hurricane Sandy made landfall on October 29, 2012, near Brigantine, New Jersey, and had a transformative impact on Staten Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Of the 43 New York City fatalities, 23 occurred on Staten Island. The borough, with a population of approximately 500,000, experienced some of the most devastating impacts of the storm. Since Hurricane Sandy, protective dunes have been constructed on the southeast shore of Staten Island. ADCIRCSWAN model simulations run on The City University of New York's Cray XE6M, housed at the College of Staten Island, using updated topographic data show that the coast of Staten Island is still susceptible to tidal surge similar to those generated by Hurricane Sandy. Sandy hindcast simulations of storm surges focusing on Staten Island are in good agreement with observed storm tide measurements. Model results calculated from fine-scaled and coarse-scaled computational grids demonstrate that finer grids better resolve small differences in the topography of critical hydraulic control structures, which affect storm surge inundation levels. The storm surge simulations, based on post-storm topography obtained from high-resolution lidar, provide much-needed information to understand Staten Island's changing vulnerability to storm surge inundation. The results of fine-scale storm surge simulations can be used to inform efforts to improve resiliency to future storms. For example, protective barriers contain planned gaps in the dunes to provide for beach access that may inadvertently increase the vulnerability of the area
Exotic spacetimes, superconducting strings with linear momentum, and (not quite) all that
We derive the general exact vacuum metrics associated with a stationary (non
static), non rotating, cylindrically symmetric source. An analysis of the
geometry described by these vacuum metrics shows that they contain a subfamily
of metrics that, although admitting a consistent time orientation, display
"exotic" properties, such as "trapping" of geodesics and closed causal curves
through every point. The possibility that such spacetimes could be generated by
a superconducting string, endowed with a neutral current and momentum, has
recently been considered by Thatcher and Morgan. Our results, however, differ
from those found by Thatcher and Morgan, and the discrepancy is explained. We
also analyze the general possibility of constructing physical sources for the
exotic metrics, and find that, under certain restrictions, they must always
violate the dominant energy condition (DEC). We illustrate our results by
explicitly analyzing the case of concentric shells, where we find that in all
cases the external vacuum metric is non exotic if the matter in the shells

Geoeffectiveness and efficiency of CIR, Sheath and ICME in generation of magnetic storms
We investigate relative role of various types of solar wind streams in
generation of magnetic storms. On the basis of the OMNI data of interplanetary
measurements for the period of 1976-2000 we analyze 798 geomagnetic storms with
Dst < -50 nT and their interplanetary sources: corotating interaction regions
(CIR), interplanetary CME (ICME) including magnetic clouds (MC) and Ejecta and
compression regions Sheath before both types of ICME. For various types of
solar wind we study following relative characteristics: occurrence rate; mass,
momentum, energy and magnetic fluxes; probability of generation of magnetic
storm (geoeffectiveness) and efficiency of process of this generation. Obtained
results show that despite magnetic clouds have lower occurrence rate and lower
efficiency than CIR and Sheath they play an essential role in generation of
magnetic storms due to higher geoeffectiveness of storm generation (i.e higher

The transformative potential of reflective diaries for elite English cricketers
The sport of cricket has a history of its players suffering from mental health issues. The psychological study of cricket and, in particular, the attendant demands of participating at an elite level has not previously received rigorous academic attention. This study explored ten elite male cricketersâ experiences of keeping a daily reflective diary for one month during the competitive season. The aim was to assess how valuable qualitative diaries are in this field. Participants were interviewed regarding their appraisal of the methodology as a selfâhelp tool that could assist coping with performance pressures and wider life challenges. Three outcomes were revealed: first, that diary keeping was an effective opportunity to reflect upon the past and enhance oneâs self (both as an individual and a performer); second, that diary keeping acted as a form of release that allowed participants to progress; and third, that diary keeping allowed participants to discover personal patterns of success that increased the likeliness of optimum performance
Liberal intervention in the foreign policy thinking of Tony Blair and David Cameron
David Cameron was a critic of Tony Blairâs doctrine of the international community, which was used to justify war in Kosovo and more controversially in Iraq, suggesting caution in projecting military force abroad while in opposition. However, and in spite of making severe cuts to the defence budget, the Cameron-led Coalition government signed Britain up to a military intervention in Libya within a year of coming into office. What does this say about the place liberal interventionism occupies in contemporary British foreign policy? To answer this question, this article studies the nature of what we describe as the âbounded liberalâ tradition that has informed British foreign policy thinking since 1945, suggesting that it puts a distinctly UK national twist on conventional conservative thought about international affairs. Its components are: scepticism of grand schemes to remake the world; instinctive Atlanticism; security through collective endeavour; and anti-appeasement. We then compare and contrast the conditions for intervention set out by Tony Blair and David Cameron. We explain the similarities but crucially also the vital differences between the two leadersâ thinking on intervention, with particular reference to Cameronâs perception that Downing Street needed to loosen its control over foreign policy-making after Iraq. Our argument is that policy substance, policy style and party political dilemmas prompted Blair and Cameron to reconnect British foreign policy with its ethical roots, ingraining a bounded liberal posture to British foreign policy after the moral bankruptcy of the John Major years. This return to a patient, pragmatic and ethically informed foreign policy meant that military operations in Kosovo and Libya were undertaken in quite different circumstances, yet came to be justified by similar arguments from the two leaders
Adaptive walks on time-dependent fitness landscapes
The idea of adaptive walks on fitness landscapes as a means of studying
evolutionary processes on large time scales is extended to fitness landscapes
that are slowly changing over time. The influence of ruggedness and of the
amount of static fitness contributions are investigated for model landscapes
derived from Kauffman's landscapes. Depending on the amount of static
fitness contributions in the landscape, the evolutionary dynamics can be
divided into a percolating and a non-percolating phase. In the percolating
phase, the walker performs a random walk over the regions of the landscape with
