New foliose and gelatinous red macroalgae (Rhodophycota) from the Azores: morphological and geographical observations.

Taylor) Huisman and A.J.K. Millar (Rhodymeniaceae), and Agardhinula browneae (J. Agardh) De Toni (Faucheaceae). The species are described, and information on reproductive status, ecology and biogeographical relationships is provided
Macroalgal turfs in the Azores
Copyright © 2009 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.Studies on macroalgal communities of the Azores report algal turfs as one of the most conspicuous ecological entities occurring on the rocky shores of these islands. The present study investigates the influence of shore height and substratum on turf composition. Data were analysed using the software PRIMER and results confirmed the previous distinction between calcareous, dominated by articulated coralline algae, and non-calcareous turfs, characterized mainly by small red algae. However, no differences in species composition were found in either type of turf occurring on different substrata or at different shore levels

The normal ischiofemoral distance and its variations.
The aim of this study is to measure the ischiofemoral distance (IFD) in the normal hip with healthy surrounding soft tissues and describe its variations caused by gender, age and proximal femoral anatomy so that this could serve as a reference for future studies on this subject. This is a retrospective study in which we reviewed the CT scans of 149 patients (298 hips) who had a CT of their pelvis for non-orthopaedic (abdomino-pelvic) pathology. The images were reviewed by two independent observers and the IFD (the smallest distance between the lateral cortex of the ischial tuberosity and the posteromedial cortex of the lesser trochanter), offset (the perpendicular distance from the centre of the femoral head to a line running down the middle of the shaft of the femur) and the neck-shaft angle (the angle between the lines in the middle of the neck to the line forming the axis of the femoral shaft) were measured. The CT scans belonged to 71 males and 78 females (M: 48%, F: 52%), with an average age of 51 ± 19 years (range 18-92). The mean IFD was 18.6 ± 8 mm in the females and 23 ± 7 mm in the males and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The IFD increased by 1.06 mm for each 1 mm of offset and dropped by 0.09 mm with each year of age. However, the neck-shaft angle did not show any significant correlation with the IFD.This is the final version of the article. The marine algal (seaweed) flora of the Azores: 4, further additions
Eight records of seaweeds are reported new to the mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago. Coelothrix irregularis and Lejolisia sp. fall within their overall distributional range. Sebdenia rodrigueziana and Syringoderma floridana have their north-western limit of distribution there. The islands represent the western limit of occurrence for Antithamnionella boergesenii, Aphanocladia stichidiosa, Sebdenia dichotoma, and Codium effusum. The presente and previous papers in this series reveal the extension in range distribution to the west of many of the new records found in the Azores, raising the question as to why the western Atlantic acts as a barrier to dispersal. The new records presented here increase the current total of species recorded on the Azores to 385 (55 Chlorophyta, 74 Heterokontophyta (Phaeophyceae), and 256 Rhodophyta), showing that this isolated island group supports a relatively rich benthic marine algal flora

Geometrically induced singular behavior of entanglement
We show that the geometry of the set of quantum states plays a crucial role
in the behavior of entanglement in different physical systems. More
specifically it is shown that singular points at the border of the set of
unentangled states appear as singularities in the dynamics of entanglement of
smoothly varying quantum states. We illustrate this result by implementing a
photonic parametric down conversion experiment. Moreover, this effect is
