Implication Statement Medical student-led walk and talk programs, such as Walk with a Future Doc (WWAFD), provide a means for the medical community and community at-large to interact in a non-clinical setting. This environment can increase attendance accountability, enhance patient-provider relationships, and allow medical professionals to be leading examples of healthy, active living. We demonstrate the positive interest for this program, rationale of participants for joining, and the feasibility of its setup.

A polymorphism in a let-7 microRNA binding site of KRAS in women with endometriosis.

Endometriosis is found in 5-15% of women of reproductive age and is more frequent in relatives of women with the disease. Activation of KRAS results in de novo endometriosis in mice, however, activating KRAS mutations have not been identified in women. We screened 150 women with endometriosis for a polymorphism in a let-7 microRNA (miRNA) binding site in the 3'-UTR of KRAS and detected a KRAS variant allele in 31% of women with endometriosis as opposed to 5% of a large diverse control population. KRAS mRNA and protein expression were increased in cultured endometrial stromal cells of women with the KRAS variant. Increased KRAS protein was due to altered miRNA binding as demonstrated in reporter assays. Endometrial stromal cells from women with the KRAS variant showed increased proliferation and invasion. In a murine model, endometrial xenografts containing the KRAS variant demonstrated increased proliferation and decreased progesterone receptor levels. These findings suggest that an inherited polymorphism of a let-7 miRNA binding site in KRAS leads to abnormal endometrial growth and endometriosis. The LCS6 polymorphism is the first described genetic marker of endometriosis risk

Accurate and Efficient Expression Evaluation and Linear Algebra

We survey and unify recent results on the existence of accurate algorithms for evaluating multivariate polynomials, and more generally for accurate numerical linear algebra with structured matrices. By "accurate" we mean that the computed answer has relative error less than 1, i.e., has some correct leading digits. We also address efficiency, by which we mean algorithms that run in polynomial time in the size of the input. Our results will depend strongly on the model of arithmetic: Most of our results will use the so-called Traditional Model (TM). We give a set of necessary and sufficient conditions to decide whether a high accuracy algorithm exists in the TM, and describe progress toward a decision procedure that will take any problem and provide either a high accuracy algorithm or a proof that none exists. When no accurate algorithm exists in the TM, it is natural to extend the set of available accurate operations by a library of additional operations, such as x+y+zx+y+z, dot products, or indeed any enumerable set which could then be used to build further accurate algorithms. We show how our accurate algorithms and decision procedure for finding them extend to this case. Finally, we address other models of arithmetic, and the relationship between (im)possibility in the TM and (in)efficient algorithms operating on numbers represented as bit strings.Comment: 49 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

Faculty Empowering Faculty: SoTL Leaders Catalyzing Institutional and Cultural Change

    Get PDF
Faculty are increasingly interested in engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) across disciplines, necessitating educational development support. While many institutions utilize one-time workshops and faculty communities offering professional development funding, the case study presented in this article takes a different approach. The aim of the Engaged Teacher-Scholar (ETS) program is to support faculty growth in a process of becoming ETS leaders across the university campus. ETS leaders advance an individual SoTL research project and are trained to develop a plan for and offer professional development events to their department, college, and university related to SoTL. The article presents an overview of the program’s objectives, organization, and outcomes over four years of implementation. The article concludes with implications for implementation at other institutions

Performance of Different Carbon Electrode Materials: Insights into Stability and Degradation under Real Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Operating Conditions

    Get PDF
This work focuses on the performance and stability of selected commercial carbon electrode materials before and after heat-treatment in an operating all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). Heat treatment results in improved cell performance for all tested materials, with SGL 39 AA carbon papers and SIGRACELL GFD4.6 EA carbon felt showing the best performance. Further investigation of these two materials by in situ reference electrode measurements reveal improvements after heat-treatment that originate mainly from the negative electrode or V2+/V3+ side of the cell. Upon extended cycling, carbon felt is found to be stable. Carbon papers however, show significant performance losses originating from the negative electrode side. The potential limit during charging and the exposure to very negative potentials appears to be a critical issue at the negative electrode in the VRB. Analysis of both materials after cycling by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal significant differences in their surface chemistry, structure and morphology. These differences give valuable insights into the behavior and degradation of different carbon materials used in VRBs.ISSN:0013-4651ISSN:1945-711

Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI Can Monitor the Very Early Inflammatory Treatment Response upon Intra-Articular Steroid Injection in the Knee Joint: A Case Report with Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI in inflammatory arthritis, especially in conjunction with computer-aided analysis using appropriate dedicated software, seems to be a highly sensitive tool for monitoring the early inflammatory treatment response in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This paper gives a review of the current knowledge of the emerging technique. The potential of the technique is demonstrated and discussed in the context of a case report following the early effect of an intra-articular steroid injection in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis flare in the knee
