A New Species of Hansenocaris (Crustacea : Facetotecta) from Tanabe Bay, Japan
A new species of "cypris y" (Crustacea: Facetotecta) is described from Tanabe Bay on the Pacific coast of Japan under the name Hansenocaris furcifera. The nauplius of this new species is "nauplius y type IX" sensu Ito. A possible penis is recognized in the Facetotecta for the first time, represented by an apically bifurcate process on the ventum of the first abdominal somite. External features of various body parts are described in detail based upon observations with a scanning electron microscope. New terms are proposed to describe certain structures
Description and Complete Larval Development of a New Species of Baccalaureus (Crustacea: Ascothoracida) Parasitic in a Zoanthid from Tanabe Bay, Honshu, Japan
An unidentified species of Zoanthus from Tanabe Bay, Honshu, Japan, is the host of an endoparasitic ascothoracidan crustacean, Baccalaureus falsiramus, new species. This is the first record of this zoanthid genus serving as the host of an ascothoracidan and the second species of Baccalaureus from Japan. The morphology of the adult females, nauplii, and ascothoracid larva is described based upon a detailed study combining light microscopy and SEM. The female of this new species is characterized by a coiled carapace but very short, more or less distally upturned thoracic horns, and very long, ventrally directed papillae for seminal receptacle ducts lateral to thoracopods II-IV. Much variability is recognized in the antennule, thoracopods, penis, and abdominal ornamentation. Larval specimens were individually reared in the laboratory. Six lecithotrophic naupliar instars with rudimentary endites on the antennae and mandibles are present before the ascothoracid larva. The nauplii swam for about one month without feeding until the metamorphosis to the ascothoracid larva. Naupliar instars II-VI have a sculpture of concentric cuticular ridges on the marginal area of the dorsal shield. A nauplius eye is present through all naupliar instars as well as in the ascothoracid larva. Setae are gradually added to the antennules, but the antennae and mandibles remain essentially unchanged after instar III; rudimentary maxillules appear in instar II. The ascothoracid larva is a "Tessmann's larva" similar to one recently described from Hawaiian plankton, but lacking central pores within the carapace reticulations. Misophriopsis okinawensis sp. nov. (Crustacea: Copepoda) from Hyperbenthic Waters off Okinawa, South Japan, with Definitions of Related Genera Misophria Boeck, 1864 and Stygomisophria gen. nov.
A new misophrioid copepod Misophriopsis okinawensis (Crustacea) is reported from Kume Island, Okinawa, South Japan. A full description of the new misophrioid is presented, together with supplementary notes on the males of Misophria pallida Boeck, 1864. Consideration of the phylogeny of the new species led to a reassessment of the affinities between all the named species of Misophria Boeck, 1864 and Misophriopsis Boxshall, 1983. A new genus, Stygomisophira, is recognised based on Misophria kororiensis Boxshall et Iliffe, 1987. Diagnoses are presented of all three genera
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Mn4N films on MgO(001) and SrTiO3(001) substrates
We grew Mn4N epitaxial thin films capped with Au layers on MgO(001) and SrTiO3(001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) was confirmed in all the samples at room temperature from the magnetization versus magnetic field curves using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. From the ω-2θ x-ray diffraction (XRD) and ϕ-2θ χ XRD patterns, the ratios of perpendicular lattice constant c to in-plane lattice constant a, c/a, were found to be about 0.99 for all the samples. These results imply that PMA is attributed to the in-plane tensile strain in the Mn4N films
The Outcome of Cochlear Implantation for Mitochondrial Disease Patients With Syndromic Hearing Loss.
【Objectives】To evaluate the outcome and to confirm the validity of cochlear implantation for syndromic deafness in patients with mitochondrial disease. Study Design: Retrospective case review. 【Setting】Tertiary referral center. 【Patients】We reviewed medical charts of 367 cochlear implantation cases at Kyoto University Hospital between 1987 and 2012. We identified five patients with syndromic mitochondrial disease who underwent cochlear implantation surgery. The mean age of the patients (four women and one man) when they underwent surgeries was 44.4 years (range, 30–64 yr; median, 41 yr). 【Interventions】Therapeutic and rehabilitative. 【Main Outcome Measure】In four of five patients, speech perception performance was measured using Japanese vowels, consonant-vowel syllables, and short sentences. 【Results】Only 1.4% (5 of 367) of cochlear implantation cases at Kyoto University Hospital underwent cochlear implantation surgery because of syndromic mitochondrial diseases. Four of those patients showed significantly improved speech perception outcomes, and the beneficial effects of the intervention continued long after surgery. One patient could not perform speech perception test presumably because of poor cognitive function. 【Conclusion】Mitochondrial disease patients who underwent cochlear implantation surgery sustained gains in hearing performance even long after surgery. A single patient showed poor postoperative speech perception associated with cognitive problems. Cochlear implantation for mitochondrial disease patients seems to be a viable treatment option in the absence of significant cognitive impairment
Electronic structures and magnetic moments of Co3FeN thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy
We evaluated electronic structures and magnetic moments in Co3FeN epitaxial films on SrTiO3(001). The experimentally obtained hard x-ray photoemission spectra of the Co3FeN film have a good agreement with those calculated. Site averaged spin magnetic moments deduced by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism were 1.52 μ B per Co atom and 2.08 μ B per Fe atom at 100 K. They are close to those of Co4N and Fe4N, respectively, implying that the Co and Fe atoms randomly occupy the corner and face-centered sites in the Co3FeN unit cell

X-ray lines from photon excitation were measured in selected elements from Mg to Cu using a high-resolution double-crystal X-ray spectrometer with a proportional counter, and the (Formula presented.) intensity ratio for each element was obtained, after correcting for self-absorption, detection efficiency, and crystal reflectance. This intensity ratio increases rapidly from Mg to Ca but, in the (Formula presented.) elements region, the increase becomes slower. This is related to the intensity of the (Formula presented.) line involving valence electrons. The slow increase of this ratio in the (Formula presented.) elements region is thought to be due to the correlation between (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) electrons. Moreover, the chemical shifts, FWHM, asymmetry indices, and (Formula presented.) intensity ratios of the Cr compounds, due to different valences, were also investigated using the same double-crystal X-ray spectrometer. The Effect of the Kampo
Background. Preoperative anxiety can lead to unfavorable physiological response such as tachycardia and hypertension. Prevention of preoperative anxiety improves surgical outcome and decreases inpatient stay. Yokukansan is one of prescriptions in Kampo, traditional Japanese herbal medicine, and is known to exert anxiolytic effects. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of diazepam and Yokukansan on preoperative anxiety, salivary amylase activity, and sedation levels. Methods. Seventy American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II patients presenting for hemicolectomy under general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia were enrolled. The Diazepam group received diazepam 5 mg orally and the Yokukansan group received Yokukansan 2.5 g orally. Results. Although levels of anxiety and salivary amylase activity were not different between the two groups, the modified Observer’s Assessment of Alertness/Sedation Scale of the Yokukansan group was significantly higher compared to that of the Diazepam group. Conclusion. Yokukansan alleviated preoperative anxiety without undesirable sedation, when compared with diazepam
Topical insulin-like growth factor 1 treatment using gelatin hydrogels for glucocorticoid-resistant sudden sensorineural hearing loss: a prospective clinical trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is a common condition in which patients lose the hearing in one ear within 3 days. Systemic glucocorticoid treatments have been used as standard therapy for SSHL; however, about 20% of patients do not respond. We tested the safety and efficacy of topical insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) application using gelatin hydrogels as a treatment for SSHL.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients with SSHL that showed no recovery to systemic glucocorticoid administration were recruited. We applied gelatin hydrogels, impregnated with recombinant human IGF1, into the middle ear. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of patients showing hearing improvement 12 weeks after the test treatment. The secondary outcome measures were the proportion of patients showing improvement at 24 weeks and the incidence of adverse events. The null hypothesis was that 33% of patients would show hearing improvement, as was reported for a historical control after hyperbaric oxygen therapy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total, 25 patients received the test treatment at a median of 23 days (range 15-32) after the onset of SSHL, between 2007 and 2009. At 12 weeks after the test treatment, 48% (95% CI 28% to 69%; <it>P </it>= 0.086) of patients showed hearing improvement, and the proportion increased to 56% (95% CI 35% to 76%; <it>P </it>= 0.015) at 24 weeks. No serious adverse events were observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Topical IGF1 application using gelatin hydrogels is well tolerated and may be efficacious for hearing recovery in patients with SSHL that is resistant to systemic glucocorticoids.</p
