Methodological approach for mapping the flood physical vulnerability index with geographical open-source data: an example in a small-middle city (Ponferrada, Spain)
[EN] To increase the resilience of communities against floods, it is necessary to develop method-
ologies to estimate the vulnerability. The concept of vulnerability is multidimensional, but
most flood vulnerability studies have focused only on the social approach. Nevertheless, in
recent years, following seismic analysis, the physical point of view has increased its rele-
vance. Therefore, the present study proposes a methodology to map the flood physical vul-
nerability and applies it using an index at urban parcel scale for a medium-sized town (Pon-
ferrada, Spain). This index is based on multiple indicators fed by geographical open-source
data, once they have been normalized and combined with different weights extracted from
an Analytic Hierarchic Process. The results show a raster map of the physical vulnerability
index that facilitates future emergency and flood risk management to diminish potential
damages. A total of 22.7% of the urban parcels in the studied town present an index value
higher than 0.4, which is considered highly vulnerable. The location of these urban par-
cels would have passed unnoticed without the use of open governmental datasets, when an
average value would have been calculated for the overall municipality. Moreover, the build-
ing percentage covered by water was the most influential indicator in the study area, where
the simulated flood was generated by an alleged dam break. The study exceeds the spatial
constraints of collecting this type of data by direct interviews with inhabitants and allows
for working with larger areas, identifying the physical buildings and infrastructure differ-
ences among the urban parcelsS
Abnormal Maternal Body Mass Index and Customized Fetal Weight Charts : Improving the Identification of Small for Gestational Age Fetuses and Newborns
Background: Obesity and thinness are serious diseases, but cases with abnormal maternal weight have not been excluded from the calculations in the construction of customized fetal growth curves (CCs). Method: To determine if the new CCs, built excluding mothers with an abnormal weight, are better than standard CCs at identifying SGA. A total of 16,122 neonates were identified as SGA, LGA, or AGA, using the two models. Logistic regression and analysis of covariance were used to calculate the OR and CI for adverse outcomes by group. Gestational age was considered as a covariable. Results: The SGA rates by the new CCs and by the standard CCs were 11.8% and 9.7%, respectively. The SGA rate only by the new CCs was 18% and the SGA rate only by the standard CCs was 0.01%. Compared to AGA by both models, SGA by the new CCs had increased rates of cesarean section, (OR 1.53 (95% CI 1.19, 1.96)), prematurity (OR 2.84 (95% CI 2.09, 3.85)), NICU admission (OR 5.41 (95% CI 3.47, 8.43), and adverse outcomes (OR 1.76 (95% CI 1.06, 2.60). The strength of these associations decreased with gestational age. Conclusion: The use of the new CCs allowed for a more accurate identification of SGA at risk of adverse perinatal outcomes as compared to the standard CC

A case study in Ponferrada municipality (León, Spain)

Achieving Extremely Concentrated Aqueous Dispersions of Graphene Flakes and Catalytically Efficient Graphene-Metal Nanoparticle Hybrids with Flavin Mononucleotide as a High-Performance Stabilizer
This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, copyright © American Chemical Society after peer review and technical editing by the publisher. To access the final edited and published work see [insert ACS Articles on Request author-directed link to Published Work, see https://doi.org/10.1021/acsami.5b00910The stable dispersion of graphene flakes in an aqueous medium is highly desirable for the development of materials based on this two-dimensional carbon structure, but current production protocols that make use of a number of surfactants typically suffer from limitations regarding graphene concentration or the amount of surfactant required to colloidally stabilize the sheets. Here, we demonstrate that an innocuous and readily available derivative of vitamin B2, namely the sodium salt of flavin mononucleotide (FMNS), is a highly efficient dispersant in the preparation of aqueous dispersions of defect-free, few-layer graphene flakes. Most notably, graphene concentrations in water as high as ∼50 mg mL–1 using low amounts of FMNS (FMNS/graphene mass ratios of about 0.04) could be attained, which facilitated the formation of free-standing graphene films displaying high electrical conductivity (∼52000 S m–1) without the need of carrying out thermal annealing or other types of post-treatment. The excellent performance of FMNS as a graphene dispersant could be attributed to the combined effect of strong adsorption on the sheets through the isoalloxazine moiety of the molecule and efficient colloidal stabilization provided by its negatively charged phosphate group. The FMNS-stabilized graphene sheets could be decorated with nanoparticles of several noble metals (Ag, Pd, and Pt), and the resulting hybrids exhibited a high catalytic activity in the reduction of nitroarenes and electroreduction of oxygen. Overall, the present results should expedite the processing and implementation of graphene in, e.g., conductive inks, composites, and hybrid materials with practical utility in a wide range of applications.Financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (project MAT2011-26399) is gratefully acknowledged.
