    Differentiation of multipotent vascular stem cells contributes to vascular diseases.

    It is generally accepted that the de-differentiation of smooth muscle cells, from the contractile to the proliferative/synthetic phenotype, has an important role during vascular remodelling and diseases. Here we provide evidence that challenges this theory. We identify a new type of stem cell in the blood vessel wall, named multipotent vascular stem cells. Multipotent vascular stem cells express markers, including Sox17, Sox10 and S100β, are cloneable, have telomerase activity, and can differentiate into neural cells and mesenchymal stem cell-like cells that subsequently differentiate into smooth muscle cells. On the other hand, we perform lineage tracing with smooth muscle myosin heavy chain as a marker and find that multipotent vascular stem cells and proliferative or synthetic smooth muscle cells do not arise from the de-differentiation of mature smooth muscle cells. In response to vascular injuries, multipotent vascular stem cells, instead of smooth muscle cells, become proliferative, and differentiate into smooth muscle cells and chondrogenic cells, thus contributing to vascular remodelling and neointimal hyperplasia. These findings support a new hypothesis that the differentiation of multipotent vascular stem cells, rather than the de-differentiation of smooth muscle cells, contributes to vascular remodelling and diseases

    Otocephaly is a rare lethal syndrome of microstomia, aglossia, agnathia, and synotia. This male infant was born to a 19-year-old, gravida 1, para 0, woman who received routine prenatal check-up. Polyhydramnios, low-lying ears, and proboscis were noted by sonography at 29 weeks of gestation. Amniocentesis showed a normal karyotype of 46, XY. Premature rupture of membranes and preterm labor were noted at 32 weeks of gestation. A male infant was delivered preterm and died shortly after birth. The infant showed midline proboscis and absence of mandible. The simple, soft ears were extremely low-set and were near the midline of the neck. Otocephaly is regarded as the most severe form of first arch anomalies. Prenatal diagnosis should be dependent on ultrasound analysis. In the face of polyhydramnios, otocephaly is one of the possible fetal anomalies

    EDA-Driven Preprocessing for SAT Solving

    Effective formulation of problems into Conjunctive Normal Form (CNF) is critical in modern Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) solving for optimizing solver performance. Addressing the limitations of existing methods, our Electronic Design Automation (EDA)-driven preprocessing framework introduces a novel methodology for preparing SAT instances, leveraging both circuit and CNF formats for enhanced flexibility and efficiency. Central to our approach is the integration of a new logic synthesis technique, guided by a reinforcement learning agent, and a novel cost-customized LUT mapping strategy, enabling efficient handling of diverse SAT challenges. By transforming the SAT competition benchmarks into circuit instances, our framework demonstrates substantial performance improvements, as evidenced by a 52.42% reduction on average compared to solving directly. Moreover, our framework achieves a remarkable 96.14% runtime reduction on average for a set of logic equivalence checking problems that exhibit inherent circuit structures. These results highlight the effectiveness and versatility of our approach in handling both CNF and circuit instances. The code is available at https://github.com/cure-lab/EDA4SAT

    Generation of Photonic Hooks under Point-Source Illumination from Patchy Microcylinders

    Photonic hook (PH) is a new type of non-evanescent light beam with subwavelength curved structures. It has shown promising applications in super-resolution imaging and has the potential to be used in micromachining, optical trapping, etc. PHs are generally produced by illuminating mesoscale asymmetric particles with optical plane waves. In this work, we used the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to investigate the PH phenomenon under point-source illumination. We found that the PHs can be effectively generated from point-source illuminated patchy particles. By changing the background refractive index, particle diameters and the position and coverage ratio of Ag patches, the characteristics of the PHs can be effectively tuned. Moreover, the structure of the intensity distribution of the light field generated from small and large particles can have an opposite bending direction due to the near-field light-matter interaction

    A retrospective study of surgical treatment and outcome among women with adnexal torsion in eastern Taiwan from 2010 to 2015

    Background Adnexal torsion is a gynecologic emergency that requires surgical treatment. In this study, we reviewed the surgical outcomes of women with adnexal torsion in eastern Taiwan (Hualien county, area 4,629 km2, 330,000 residents). Methods This retrospective study included 42 women diagnosed with surgically-proven adnexal torsion from January 1, 2010, to September 31, 2015. We compared the symptoms, objective findings, and surgical outcomes of patients who underwent laparotomy or laparoscopy. Results The laparoscopy and laparotomy groups included 27 and 15 patients, respectively. The most common symptom and sign was abdominal pain, followed by nausea and vomiting. In all patients, an adnexal tumor was detected through ultrasound. The median and range of time from admission to surgery was 1.5 (1–11.5) and 1.0 (1–11) hours in the laparotomy and laparoscopy groups, respectively. Compared with those undergoing laparotomy, the smaller tumor size [7 (4.2–10) vs. 10 (7–17) cm] and shorter hospital stay [4 (2–8) vs. 6 (3–9) days] in patients undergoing laparoscopy were significantly noted, respectively (P < 0.01). No differences were observed in age, operative time, and blood loss between both groups. The surgeries performed were mostly detorsion with cystectomy and adnexectomy. The most common pathology was a simple ovarian cyst, followed by teratoma. Regarding the surgical types, older age is the only risk factor for radical surgery. Discussion Acute onset of abdominal pain with a presenting ovarian tumor is the most common feature of adnexal torsion. Laparoscopic surgical group showed a small tumor size and a short ER hospital stay than laparotomy. Older age is the risk factor for radical surgery

    Comparison of inebilizumab or rituximab in addition to glucocorticoid therapy for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders

    AIM: To investigate the short-term efficacy and safety of inebilizumab for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). METHODS: A total of 33 patients with NMOSD treated with inebilizumab (Group INB, n=15) or rituximab (Group RTX, n=18) in addition to high-dose glucocorticoids were included. Both groups underwent hormone shock therapy during the acute phase. Subsequently, Group INB received inebilizumab injections during the remission phase, while Group RTX received rituximab injections. A comparison of aquaporins 4 (AQP4) titer values, peripheral blood B lymphocyte counts, and visual function recovery was conducted before and 8wk after treatment. Additionally, adverse reactions and patient tolerability were analyzed after using inebilizumab treatment regimes. RESULTS: Following inebilizumab treatment, there was a significantly improvement in the visual acuity of NMOSD patients (P0.05). Furthermore, inebilizumab exhibited higher safety levels than that of rituximab injections. CONCLUSION: The combination of inebilizumab and high-dose glucocorticoids proves to be effective. In comparison to rituximab injections, inebilizumab displays better tolerance and safety. Moreover, it demonstrates a partial effect in preventing optic nerve atrophy. Thus, it stands as an effective method to reduce the disability rates and improve the daily living ability of patients with NMOSD
