Lessons Learned in Fabrication of a High-Specific-Torque Concentric Magnetic Gear
Magnetic gearing is being investigated at NASA as a replacement to conventional mechanical gearing in aerospace applications. Some key benefits of magnetic gears over mechanical gearing are torque transmission without mechanical contact, decreased transmission noise, less frequent maintenance, and lack of lubrication. In order to take advantage of these benefits in aerospace applications, magnetic gearing must be shown to provide high enough specific torque (torque per unit mass). Prototype 2 (PT-2), developed to maximize specific torque, and fabricated at NASA Glenn Research Center, has shown promising specific torque comparable to low torque mechanical gears. This work will briefly review the electromagnetic and structural design of PT-2, provide detailed information on fabrication and assembly, examine build errors, walk through rebuild efforts to improve operation, and conclude with remarks on build difficulties and opportunities for improvement in future prototypes

The SNS linac high power RF system design, status, and results
The Spallation Neutron Source being built at the Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee requires a 1 GeV proton linac. Los Alamos has responsibility for the RF systems for the entire linac. The linac requires 3 distinct types of RF systems: 2.5-MW peak, 402.5 MHz, RF systems for the RFQ and DTL (7 systems total); 5-MW peak, 805 MHz systems for the CCL and the two energy corrector cavities (6 systems total); and 550-kW peak, 805 MHz systems for the superconducting sections (8 1 systems total). The design of the SNS Linac RF system was presented at the 2001 Particle Accelerator Conference in Chicago. Vendors have been selected for the klystrons (3 different vendors), circulators ( I vendor), transmitter (1 vendor), and high power RF loads (3 different vendors). This paper presents the results and status of vendor procurements, test results of the major components of the Linac RF system and our installation progress
Effects of Music Therapy On Hospitalized Patients with Severe Mental Illnesses
Previous studies reported that music therapy (MT) exerts a positive effect on many medical and neuropsychiatric disorders. The use of MT has been proposed also for patients with severe mental illnesse (SMI), altrough further studies are still needed. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects on a structured MT program on clinical and social functioning indices of patient with SMI, hospitalized in an psychiatric emergency ward. The MT intervention followed the Benenzon model of MT and was delivered biweekly to 61 patients consecutively admittted to the psychiatric emergency ward. Subjects who did not complete the two-week MT intervention (N=45) were considered as the control group. all subjects were administred the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) to evaluate the general psychopatology, the Hospital Anxiety And Depression Scale (HADS) for affective symptomatology, the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI-S) for severity of symptoms and the Global Assestment of Functioning (GAF) for psychosocial functioning. A repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that patients who unerwent the MT intervention had a statistically significant reduction of general and affective psychopatology scores and of symptoms severity with respect to the control group, after observation period. Our result are in line with previous studies confirming that MT may exert positive effects on psychopatology (in particular, on affective symptomatology) of patient with SMI, and extend this observation to an emergency setting, with short period of hospital stay

FPC conditioning cart at BNL
The 703 MHz superconducting gun for the BNL Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) prototype has two fundamental power couplers (FPCs), and each of them will deliver up to 500 kW of CW RF power. In order to prepare the couplers for high power RF service and process multipacting, the FPCs should be conditioned prior to installation into the gun cryomodule. A conditioning cart based test stand, which includes a vacuum pumping system, controllable bake-out system, diagnostics, interlocks and data log system has been designed, constructed and commissioned by collaboration of BNL and AES. Observations of secondary emission chamber degradation from very high intensity proton beams at the AGS
Degradation of Secondary Emission Chamber (SEC) efficiencies has been seen in the past. As a result, instruments in use today are built to minimize any such effects. With beam intensities as high as 6 x 10{sup 13} protons per pulse incident on these devices the authors are again observing significant degradation in SEC efficiencies. In this report the authors will present observations of these effects and methods they have developed to cope with them

Phase and amplitude feedback control system for the Los Alamos free-electron laser
Phase and amplitude feedback control systems for the Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL) are described. Beam-driven voltages are very high in the buncher cavity because the electron gun is pulsed at the fifth subharmonic of the buncher resonant frequency. The high beam loading necessitated a novel feedback and drive configuration for the buncher. A compensation cirucit has been added to the gun/driver system to reduce observed drift. Extremely small variations in the accelerator gradients had dramatic effects on the laser output power. These problems and how they were solved are described and plans for improvements in the feedback control system are discussed. 5 refs., 7 figs
