Aging and response properties in the parking-lot model
An adsorption-desorption (or parking-lot) model can reproduce qualitatively
the densification kinetics and other features of a weakly vibrated granular
material. Here we study the the two-time correlation and response functions of
the model and demonstrate that their behavior is consistent with recently
observed memory effects in granular materials. Although the densification
kinetics and hysteresis are robust properties, we show that the aging behavior
of the adsorption-desorption model is different from other models of granular
compaction. We propose an experimental test to distinguish the possible aging

Electric fishing survey of the gravel addition sites on the River Wyre, Grizedale Beck and Joshua's Beck.
Although geographically the River Wyre lies between two rivers containing major migrations of adult salmon and sea trout, its rod & line fisheries have for a number of years produced exceptionally low catches. In order to determine the causes of this the Wyre Salmon and Sea trout Restoration Group (WSSRG) was conceived in 1994 as a partnership between the then National Rivers Authority (now Environment Agency), local landowners, angling clubs and interested parties.
Two studies of 1994 and 1995 stated that there is a shortage of useable spawning gravels on the river. This is
compounded by Abbeystead Reservoir acting as a gravel trap, the siltation of gravels on several side becks and problems with access to available gravels by returning adults. There
was also perceived to be a need for accurate fishery data from the river encompassing redd counts, catch data and surveys of fry populations.
The 1995 report suggested a number of management proposals which might be adopted in order to improve and create available spawning habitat for migratory salmonids. Funding was made available to create three spawning gravels on each of two side becks (Grizedale Beck and Joshua's Beck) and the addition of gravels to a site oh the main river below Abbeystead Reservoir. Modifications were also made to the fish pass at Abbeystead to allow easier passage of fish. These improvements were made in the autumn of 1995. Salmonid spawning redd counting was undertaken on the whole Wyre catchment in 1995/1996 and specific surveys by electric fishing on the gravel enhancement sites in the summer of 1996.
This report details the current state of the improvement works that were undertaken and presents the results of electric fishing surveys in September 1996. A number of lessons have been learnt which will be of great benefit to the Fisheries Function in other parts of the Wyre catchment and the Central Area in general
A simple method for estimating minimum autorotative descent rate of single rotor helicopters
Flight test results of minimum autorotative descent rate are compared with calculations based on the minimum power required for steady level flight. Empirical correction factors are derived that account for differences in energy dissipation between these two flight conditions. A method is also presented for estimating the minimum power coefficient for level flight for any helicopter for use in the empirical estimation procedure of autorotative descent rate

Beryllium 7 and Lead 210 in the western hemisphere Arctic atmosphere: Observations from three recent aircraft-based sampling programs
Concentrations of the natural radionuclides 7Be and 210Pb were determined in aerosol samples collected in the western hemisphere Arctic during the recent NOAA Arctic Gas and Aerosol Sampling Program (AGASP 3) and NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment/Arctic Boundary Layer Expeditions (GTE/ABLE 3A and ABLE 3B) missions. Beryllium 7 showed a free tropospheric concentration maximum between 4 and 5 km in the summer of 1990. Previous 7Be data obtained in the late 1950s and early 1960s also indicated a similar vertical distribution of 7Be near 70°N. Injection of stratospheric air through tropopause folds associated with the Arctic jet near 70°N appears to explain the presence of a layer of air near 4–5 km in the high Arctic free troposphere with elevated 7Be concentrations. The vertical distribution of 210Pb showed a distinct difference between the high-Arctic and sub-Arctic in the summer of 1988. At latitudes greater than 65°N, 210Pb concentrations at 3–6 km were elevated compared to those below 1 km. The reverse of this trend was observed near 60°N. These same vertical distributions were also apparent in aerosol SO42−, determined in separate aerosol samples collected on the same flights (Talbot et al., this issue). The results for 210Pb suggest that some of the difference between the summer troposphere in the high- and sub-Arctic is also due to enhanced stratosphere-troposphere exchange in the vicinity of the Arctic jet. These observations, and other findings from ABLE 3A presented in this issue, suggest that for some species the stratosphere may be a principal source influencing their distribution in the Arctic summer troposphere. For example, intrusions of stratospheric air constitute the dominant source term for tropospheric budgets of 7Be and ozone, and may be important in the 210Pb, SO42−, and NOybudgets. Further investigation, including determination of detailed 7Be and 210Pb distributions, is needed to quantify the stratospheric impact on the chemistry of the Arctic troposphere during the summer

Topics of investigation include physiological factors of muscle atrophy in space flight, biochemistry, countermeasures, modelling of atrophied muscle tissue, and various methods of measurement of muscle strength and endurance. Optimizing the Throughput of Particulate Streams Subject to Blocking
Filtration, flow in narrow channels and traffic flow are examples of
processes subject to blocking when the channel conveying the particles becomes
too crowded. If the blockage is temporary, which means that after a finite time
the channel is flushed and reopened, one expects to observe a maximum
throughput for a finite intensity of entering particles. We investigate this
phenomenon by introducing a queueing theory inspired, circular Markov model.
Particles enter a channel with intensity and exit at a rate . If
particles are present at the same time in the channel, the system becomes
blocked and no more particles can enter until the blockage is cleared after an
exponentially distributed time with rate . We obtain an exact expression
for the steady state throughput (including the exiting blocked particles) for
all values of . For we show that the throughput assumes a maximum
value for finite if . The time-dependent throughput
either monotonically approaches the steady state value, or reaches a maximum
value at finite time. We demonstrate that, in the steady state, this model can
be mapped to a previously introduced non-Markovian model with fixed transit and
blockage times.
We also examine an irreversible, non-Markovian blockage process with constant
transit time exposed to an entering flux of fixed intensity for a finite time
and we show that the first and second moments of the number of exiting
