Experimental and Theoretical Evaluation of the Effect of Panel Geometry on the Failure of Corrugated Board Panel

McKee’s formula is widely used to predict the compression strength (CS) of corrugated boxes and panels. It can accurately estimate the compression strength of boxes that are within a practical size range, but recently, larger and smaller corrugated boxes than before have been extensively developed. Therefore, there is a need for a CS prediction formula that works beyond the application range of McKee’s formula. Recent researches consider the failure mode as a combination of collapsing and buckling failure and remove the constraints and the assumptions associated with McKee’s formula. This makes it possible to more accurately estimate the CS of boxes that are not covered by McKee’s formula. Many CS formulae are derived logically from material mechanics, but doing so can make it difficult to account for various actual behaviors in detail up to when the box fails. Instead, by analyzing the behavior up to failure in detail, we explored relationships that could account for the CS consistently based on its behavior

A Review of ERCC1 Gene in Bladder Cancer: Implications for Carcinogenesis and Resistance to Chemoradiotherapy

The excision repair cross-complementing group 1 (ERCC1) gene performs a critical incision step in DNA repair and is reported to be correlated with carcinogenesis and resistance to drug or ionizing radiation therapy. We reviewed the correlation between ERCC1 and bladder cancer. In carcinogenesis, several reports discussed the relation between ERCC1 single nucleotide polymorphisms and carcinogenesis in bladder cancer only in case-control studies. Regarding the relation between ERCC1 and resistance to chemoradiotherapy, in vitro and clinical studies indicate that ERCC1 might be related to resistance to radiation therapy rather than cisplatin therapy. It is controversial whether ERCC1 predicts prognosis of bladder cancer treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Tyrosine kinase receptors or endothelial-mesenchymal transition are reported to regulate the expression of ERCC1, and further study is needed to clarify the mechanism of ERCC1 expression and resistance to chemoradiotherapy in vitro and to discover novel therapies for advanced and metastatic bladder cancer

Erosive Esophagitis in Women With Metabolic Syndrome

Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) are strongly associated with erosive esophagitis (EE). The prevalence of MS and EE, and the distribution of adipose tissue have been known to differ markedly between men and women. Although the prevalence of EE in men with MS is known to be higher in visceral fat type MS (V-type MS) than in subcutaneous fat type MS (S-type MS), the association between EE and the types of MS in women with MS is unclear. This study was a cross-sectional study elucidating the association between EE and the types of MS in women with MS. Subjects were 454 women with MS who underwent a regular health check-up. A distinction was made between V-type MS and S-type MS and the prevalence of EE and the association between EE and other data were elucidated. Although there were some significant different factors in characteristics between V-type MS and S-type MS, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of EE between V-type MS and S-type MS. The presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was significantly lower than in subjects with EE (13.7%) than in subjects without EE (41.9%). The frequency of hiatal hernia was significantly higher in subjects with EE (60.8%) than in subjects without EE (24.6%). Logistic regression analysis showed hiatal hernia (odds ratio: 4.673; 95% confidence interval: 2.448–8.920; P < 0.001), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (2.325; 1.110–4.870; P < 0.05), and the presence of H. pylori (0.239; 0.101–0.567; P < 0.005) were significant predictors of the prevalence of EE. V-type MS may not be such an important factor for the prevalence of EE in women with MS as in men with MS. The absence of H. pylori, hiatal hernia, and HbA1c may be more important for the prevalence of EE than the types of MS in women with MS

High speed formation of pyro-carbon coat on silicon carbide fiber by continuous chemical vapor deposition furnace

    Get PDF
In order to develop a practical process for the carbon coating on SiC fiber, high-speed and continuous pyrocarbon (PyC) coating process are under development by using a continuous CVD furnace with open-ends structure. The effects of process gas and winding speed have been investigated. It was revealed that the growth rate of PyC is in proportion to winding speed and the flow rate of process gas. PyC growth rate was reached up to 250 nm/min, which is several hundred higher than those of conventional CVI/CVD methods This results indicates that the mass production of PyC coated SiC fiber without unexpected residual deformation (torsion and curvature) is possible. And, the mass production and practical use of SiC/SiC using PyC coated SiC fiber will be largely promoted

Palliative Percutaneous Jejunal Stent for Patients with Short Bowel Syndrome

Gastrointestinal obstruction is a common preterminal event in patients with gastric and pancreatic cancer who often undergo palliative bypass surgery. Although endoscopic palliation with self-expandable metallic stents has emerged as a safe and effective alternative to surgery, experience with this technique remains limited. In particular, a proximal jejunal obstruction requires more technical expertise than a duodenal obstruction. Palliative treatment modalities include both surgical and nonsurgical approaches. In this report, we describe the successful placement of self-expandable metallic stents at the proximal jejunum using a combination of percutaneous endoscopic, intraoperative, and transstomal stenting. Usually endoscopy is not indicated in cases of proximal jejunal obstruction, but some cases may require palliative endoscopy instead of bypass operation

Impulse Strong Mirror Field for High-Energy Particle Handlings

    Get PDF
The technologies for generating strong magnetic flux density of 10 T ~ 1000 T have been developed and become to be utilized for fundamental science studies, especially for solid-state physics. These technologies enable to control the high-energy particles in a compact region, and explore the new frontier of nuclei conversions and nuclear fusion studies. The methods to generate strong mirror field for high-energy particle confinement and handlings are described in this paper

Effect of Vonoprazan on Delayed Bleeding after Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for Gastric Neoplasia among Antithrombotic Drug Users: A Single-Center, Single-Arm Prospective Observational Case Control Study

Antithrombotic therapy is a major risk factor for delayed bleeding after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric neoplasia. A potassium-competitive acid blocker, vonoprazan, is expected to prevent delayed bleeding better than conventional proton pomp inhibitors (PPIs), but the evidence is controversial. We sought to clarify the efficacy of vonoprazan for prevention of delayed bleeding after gastric ESD in patients under antithrombotic therapy. We prospectively registered 50 patients who underwent gastric ESD while receiving antithrombotic therapy and vonoprazan in our institution between October 2017 and September 2018. The incidence of delayed bleeding was compared with that in a historical control group of 116 patients treated with conventional PPI. We also evaluated risk factors associated with delayed bleeding. Delayed bleeding was observed in 8 of 50 patients (16.0%), which was not dissimilar from the incidence in the historical control group (12.1%) (p=0.49). In the univariate analysis, age (> 70 years) (p=0.034), multiple antithrombotic drug use (p 200 min) (p=0.038) and tumor size (> 40 mm) (p<0.01) were associated with delayed bleeding after gastric ESD, but vonoprazan was not (p=0.49). Vonoprazan may not be more effective than conventional PPIs in preventing delayed bleeding after gastric ESD in patients receiving antithrombotic therapy
