    The effects of dietary sugar and body size on the oviposition of Ae. aegypti were studied under laboratory conditions. In female mosquitoes provided with sugar, the start of maximum fecundity was significantly delayed and the oviposition period was longer than in females provided with water. The peak of oviposition was also delayed in sugar-fed females. Large females oviposited more eggs per day than small females at maximum fecundity and during eight days of observations. Large females also visited significantly more water-containing cups in their cages per day than small females at maximum fecundity. During the eight days of observations, large females and sugar-fed females visited more watercontaining cups in their cages than water-fed small females. Both large females and sugar-fed females oviposited their eggs at sites higher above the water line than water-fed small females. These results suggested that large and sugar-fed female Ae. aegypti mosquitoes had more energy reserves and oviposited their eggs at higher sites, which would lead to a time lag in hatching

    Attempt to Generate Uniform Magnetic Field by Face-to-Face Magnet System Containing HTS Bulk Magnets

    In order to develop small-scale nuclear magnetic resonance devices, the authors have been developing uniform magnetic fields in the space between the face-to-face settled magnetic poles which contain HTS bulk magnets. Since the NMR magnets in general require highly uniform field, it was expected to be difficult to form such homogeneous magnetic-field distribution with use of HTS bulk magnet, because the bulk magnets is characterized by its inhomogeneous magnetic field showing steep gradient. The authors modified the shape of the field distribution from convex to concave by attaching an iron plate on the pole surface. Then, the magnets were then settled face-to-face with various gaps, and the magnetic-field uniformity was estimated in the space. In order to detect the NMR signals, the field uniformity less than 1,500 ppm should be required after the former results on the hollow-type magnets. When we combined the concave and convex field distributions to compensate the uneven field distributions, the best uniformity reached 358 ppm in the 30 mm gaps, which exceeded the target value. In addition, we numerically simulated the feasible performance in this configuration, which resulted in obtaining the best uniformity of 30 ppm at 1.1 T at 7 mm distant from the pole surface in the gap of 30 mm. This result suggested that the concave and convex magnetic field distributions compensate the field uniformity with each other with keeping the magnetic field strength in the gap

    Effect of existing practices on reducing Aedes aegypti pre-adults in key breeding containers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

    This study aimed to evaluate the effects of existing practices of residents in reducing pre-adult Aedes aegypti (L.) infestation and to assess the effect of dengue-related knowledge on the practices. A house-to-house survey was conducted in two areas with different socioeconomic status in Ho Chi Minh City between October and November 2007. Some residents in both the areas used covers on the productive containers such as the jars and plastic buckets (i.e., 58% and 81% in the two study areas), and it was effective in reducing Ae. aegypti infestation: odds ratio (OR) of 4.0 and 4.9 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.49-10.76 and 1.2-19.57, respectively) for the containers with inappropriate covers compared with those with appropriate covers in the two areas, respectively. Appropriate cover use was an effective practice; however, no beneficial role of the knowledge related to dengue in promoting the practice was identified

    Structural basis for recognition of cognate tRNA by tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase from three kingdoms

    The specific aminoacylation of tRNA by tyrosyl-tRNA synthetases (TyrRSs) relies on the identity determinants in the cognate tRNATyrs. We have determined the crystal structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae TyrRS (SceTyrRS) complexed with a Tyr-AMP analog and the native tRNATyr(GΨA). Structural information for TyrRS–tRNATyr complexes is now full-line for three kingdoms. Because the archaeal/eukaryotic TyrRSs–tRNATyrs pairs do not cross-react with their bacterial counterparts, the recognition modes of the identity determinants by the archaeal/eukaryotic TyrRSs were expected to be similar to each other but different from that by the bacterial TyrRSs. Interestingly, however, the tRNATyr recognition modes of SceTyrRS have both similarities and differences compared with those in the archaeal TyrRS: the recognition of the C1-G72 base pair by SceTyrRS is similar to that by the archaeal TyrRS, whereas the recognition of the A73 by SceTyrRS is different from that by the archaeal TyrRS but similar to that by the bacterial TyrRS. Thus, the lack of cross-reactivity between archaeal/eukaryotic and bacterial TyrRS-tRNATyr pairs most probably lies in the different sequence of the last base pair of the acceptor stem (C1-G72 vs G1-C72) of tRNATyr. On the other hand, the recognition mode of Tyr-AMP is conserved among the TyrRSs from the three kingdoms
