On the intestinal extrinsic reflexes elicited from the small intestine
Effects of stimulation of the small intestine upon the gastric, small intestinal and colonic motility have been studied in dogs. The results are summarized as follows.
1. The movements of the stomach, small intestine, and proximal colon are always inhibited by the distension or the contracture of the muscular coats of the small intestine but no responses are produced by a mechanical or chemical stimulation of the mucosa; and those of the distal
colon are in most cases also inhibited, whereas in rare instances are they augmented. 2. The afferent impulses are transmitted through the great and small splanchnic nerves and the lumbar sympathetic nerves to the inhibitory as
well as the excitatory (pelvic nuclei) centers of the intestinal movements located within the spinal cord, whereas the vagal nuclei remain unaffected. The efferent impulses are transmitted through the thoraco-lumbar sympathetic nerves as well as through the pelvic nerves. The latter are involved in the augmentative effect produced in the distal colon. 3. The threshold producing the extrinsic muscular reflex is higher than that eliciting the intrinsic muscular reflex.</p
Quantification of Imidazole Compounds in Ambient Aerosols at Suburban and Forest Sites in Western Japan
Ambient aerosol particles at forest and suburban sites in western Japan were analyzed for imidazole compounds, such as 4 (5)-Methylimidazole (4-MI), 1-ethylimidazole (1-EI), 2-ethylimidazole (2-EI), and imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde (IC). The aerosols were collected on quartz fiber filters and extracted by the solid phase extraction method. The extract was analyzed by HPLC/Q-TOF-MS using an ion-pairing agent. The concentration of 4-MI in winter was higher than those in summer at the forest site; its concentration was highest among the analyzed imidazoles. The concentration of 4-MI in the suburban site was several times higher than the forest site. Anthropogenic activities, such as vehicle emissions, are considered to be the major source of 4-MI in this region
Photoprecursor approach as an effective means for preparing multilayer organic semiconducting thin films by solution processes
[プレスリリース]「重ね塗り」で有機薄膜太陽電池を高性能化~光を当てると固まる材料使い、有効性を実証~プラスチック上にも作製可能 (2014/11/19)The vertical composition profile of active layer has a major effect on the performance of organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs). While stepwise deposition of different materials is a conceptually straightforward method for controlled preparation of multi-component active layers, it is practically challenging for solution processes because of dissolution of the lower layer. Herein, we overcome this difficulty by employing the photoprecursor approach, in which a soluble photoprecursor is solution-deposited then photoconverted in situ to a poorly soluble organic semiconductor. This approach enables solution-processing of the p-i-n triple-layer architecture that has been suggested to be effective in obtaining efficient OPVs. We show that, when 2,6-dithienylanthracene and a fullerene derivative PC71BM are used as donor and acceptor, respectively, the best p-i-n OPV affords a higher photovoltaic efficiency than the corresponding p-n device by 24% and bulk-heterojunction device by 67%. The photoprecursor approach is also applied to preparation of three-component p-i-n films containing another donor 2,6-bis(59-(2-ethylhexyl)-(2,29-bithiophen)-5-yl)anthracene in the i-layer to provide a nearly doubled efficiency as compared to the original two-component p-i-n system. These results indicate that the present approach can serve as an effective means for controlled preparation of well-performing multi-component active layers in OPVs and relatedorganic electronic devices
Sensitization to secretoglobin and lipocalins in a group of young children with risk of developing respiratory allergy
Background: Multiple sensitizations in early age have been reported to be a risk for development of asthma. This study evaluates the emergence and evolution of IgE to aeroallergens among a cohort of children with physician-diagnosed atopic dermatitis and/or showing food allergy symptoms and to examine the relation to asthma development.
Methods: Three-hundred and four children (median age 13.4 months at entry) with food allergy symptoms and/or atopic dermatitis without asthma at inclusion were analysed for IgE antibodies against food-, indoor- and outdoor-allergens and pet allergen components and correlated to the individuals’ outcome on asthma inception.
Results: At 2 years of follow-up, physician-diagnosed asthma was 19.7% (n = 49) and asthma diagnosed any time was 24% (n = 67). History of persistent cough and asthma of father, combination of milk- and wheat-allergy symptoms and dual sensitization to house dust mite and Japanese cedar were independent risk factors for asthma. Sensitization to dog was the most prevalent inhalant allergen at entry. Asthma children had a higher proportion of sensitization to dog, cat and horse allergens at entry compared with non-asthma children. Being sensitized to both food, house dust mite and pet allergens was strongly associated with asthma (p = 0.0006). Component resolved diagnosis for dog and cat allergens showed that IgE antibodies to Can f 1 and Fel d 1 was common even at very young age.
Conclusions: Early sensitization to inhalant allergens increases the risk of developing asthma as well as having milk and wheat allergy symptoms. Sensitization to dog, was common at an early age despite dog ownership. Sensitization to secretoglobin and lipocalins and less to serum albumins explained the pet sensitization
Rapid Loss of Graft Immunogenicity and Transient Hyporesponsiveness to The Donor Antigen After Rat Liver Transplantation
In orthotopic liver transplantation from Lewis (LEW) into Wistar Furth (WF) rats, a transient acute rejection response is usually followed by spontaneous tolerance of the graft. In this study, we investigated the alloimmunostimulatory ability of the graft and recipient spleen after liver transplantation, and studied the kinetic response of the recipient to the donor antigen. Alloimmunogenicity of the liver graft and recipient spleen, and kinetic response of the recipient were investigated in in vivo system. Alloimmunostimulatory ability of the liver graft disappeared by day 3 after transplantation. Alloimmunostimulatory capacity of recipient spleen was maximum 12 hours after grafting and rapidly disappeared thereafter. Challenge with normal LEW lymphocytes into recipient WF rats at 14, 28, 56 days after liver transplantation induced a progressive increase in rejection response. Our results suggest that rapid loss of graft immunogenicity and transient hyporesponsiveness to the donor antigen occur after grafting in our model
Literature survey on epidemiology and pathology of cardiac fibroma

Abstract

Background

Although cardiac fibroma has been regarded as benign tumor, it presents various symptoms and may lead to death. Unfortunately, only a few studies have reported the epidemiology, embryology, and histopathology of the tumor, and the factors predicting poorer outcome are still obscured.

Methods

In July 2011 we searched for English and Japanese cases of cardiac fibroma using the PubMed and IgakuChuoZasshi databases. We then extracted and sampled raw data from the selected publications in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) style as much as was possible.

Results

Details of a total of 178 patients with cardiac fibroma were retrieved. The mean age was 11.4 years (median: 2.8 years). Tumor sizes ranged from 8.0 to 150.0 mm (mean 53.1 mm). The left ventricle was found to be the most common site associated with the tumor at a rate of 57.3%, followed by the right ventricle, and interventricular septum. The highest mortality was found in patients with septal involvement (58.6%). In all, 111 patients survived among the 160 patients with a recorded outcome. A younger age of the patient at the time of diagnosis was associated with a decreased survival rate. In addition, a significant positive association was found between ages for patients younger than 17 years of age and the diameter of the tumor at the time of diagnosis (r = 0.341, <it>P </it>= 0.006).

Conclusions

Both the younger age of patients at the time of diagnosis and septal involvement can be regarded as factors significantly indicating a poor prognosis. Furthermore, our statistical analyses support the following hypotheses. First, the high ratio of tumor-to-heart size may generate low cardiac output and therefore lead to poor outcome. Second, the ratio of the sites where cardiac fibroma occurred corresponds with the ratio of the muscular weight of the cardiac chamber. Third, cardiac fibroma involving the interventricular septum more frequently induces conduction system disease.</p
