    Novel Extrapolation Method in the Monte Carlo Shell Model

    We propose an extrapolation method utilizing energy variance in the Monte Carlo shell model in order to estimate the energy eigenvalue and observables accurately. We derive a formula for the energy variance with deformed Slater determinants, which enables us to calculate the energy variance efficiently. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated for the full pfpf-shell calculation of 56^{56}Ni, and the applicability of the method to a system beyond current limit of exact diagonalization is shown for the pfpf+g9/2g_{9/2}-shell calculation of 64^{64}Ge.Comment: 4 pages, 4figure

    Ambient temperature drying of therapeutic protein solution with use of microwave

    [EN] High quality drying of therapeutic protein-solution is important in medical and pharmaceutical processing. Freeze-drying is mostly used, but it takes a long drying-time and causes damages of protein structures. In order to improve the drying quality, we propose a microwave vacuum drying performed at ambient temperatures under low-pressure conditions. We are focusing on the Parma-Zyme method for the evaporative drying of protein solutions such as egg white or lysozyme with vitrification. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is used to detect protein conformation changes due to the drying, and it is found that the ambient temperature drying can preserve the protein conformation.CD analysis and chemical works were supported by Prof. Shigeori Takenaka, Department of Applied Chemistry, Kyushu Institute of Technology.     Efficient computation of Hamiltonian matrix elements between non-orthogonal Slater determinants

    We present an efficient numerical method for computing Hamiltonian matrix elements between non-orthogonal Slater determinants, focusing on the most time-consuming component of the calculation that involves a sparse array. In the usual case where many matrix elements should be calculated, this computation can be transformed into a multiplication of dense matrices. It is demonstrated that the present method based on the matrix-matrix multiplication attains \sim80% of the theoretical peak performance measured on systems equipped with modern microprocessors, a factor of 5-10 better than the normal method using indirectly indexed arrays to treat a sparse array. The reason for such different performances is discussed from the viewpoint of memory access.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Marked Eosinophil Infiltration

    We report a case of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with marked eosinophil infiltration which was identified postoperatively in the esophageal wall in areas not surrounding the SCC. The eosinophil infiltration was seen in the submucosa, muscle and adventitia, but not in the mucosa. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a pathological condition defined as eosinophil infiltration within the esophageal mucosa. Eosinophil infiltration at the invasion front of esophageal SCC is termed tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE). However, the eosinophil infiltration in this case may be pathologically different from both EoE and TATE. To our knowledge, this is the first report of esophageal SCC with eosinophil infiltration

    今回、A県で行われた精神障害をもつ人々に対するボランティア活動参加者の大会に参加する機会を得、精神障害者支援ボランティア参加者についての健康状態とその活動状況、生活の満足度の関連を明らかにすることとした。その結果は、健康状態と生活満足度との間には、有意な正の相関関係があった。つまり、精神障害者支援ボランティア参加者の中でも健康状態の良好な人ほど生活の満足を得ていることが窺えた。しかし、健康状態とボランティア活動状況、ボランティア活動状況と生活満足度との間には相関は見られず、健康であって初めてボランティア活動に参加する、ボランティア活動をすることが彼らの生活満足度につながるという仮説は立証されなかった。The purpose of this study is to clarify how the factors of the volunteers who help mentally disabled people; health condition, activity status, and life satisfaction, relate to each other, under a hypothesis; those who are in good health condition would do volunteer work, and doing it would make their life satisfactory. The results indicate a significant positive correlation between health condition and life satisfaction, but no positive correlation between health condition and activity status or activity status and life satisfaction. These findings indicate healthy volunteers are satisfied with their life, but did not verify the hypothesis mentioned above
