    Airborne photogrammetry and LIDAR for DSM extraction and 3D change detection over an urban area : a comparative study

    A digital surface model (DSM) extracted from stereoscopic aerial images, acquired in March 2000, is compared with a DSM derived from airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data collected in July 2009. Three densely built-up study areas in the city centre of Ghent, Belgium, are selected, each covering approximately 0.4 km(2). The surface models, generated from the two different 3D acquisition methods, are compared qualitatively and quantitatively as to what extent they are suitable in modelling an urban environment, in particular for the 3D reconstruction of buildings. Then the data sets, which are acquired at two different epochs t(1) and t(2), are investigated as to what extent 3D (building) changes can be detected and modelled over the time interval. A difference model, generated by pixel-wise subtracting of both DSMs, indicates changes in elevation. Filters are proposed to differentiate 'real' building changes from false alarms provoked by model noise, outliers, vegetation, etc. A final 3D building change model maps all destructed and newly constructed buildings within the time interval t(2) - t(1). Based on the change model, the surface and volume of the building changes can be quantified

    National audienceLes usines de recyclage de batteries sont actuellement l'une des principales activités humaines à l'origine d'émissions de plomb dans l'environnement. Leurs salariés sont exposés aux particules de process concentrées en plomb et autres métaux par deux voies d'exposition : l'inhalation et l'ingestion. Dans le but de préserver au mieux la santé des travailleurs, il est donc important de caractériser l'exposition à ces particules ainsi que leur potentiel toxique. Les particules les plus fines (de diamètre inférieur à 10 µm) présentes dans l'ambiance des postes de travail contribuent particulièrement à l'exposition des travailleurs : elles représentent non seulement la fraction inhalable mais contribuent probablement à une fraction non négligeable des particules ingérées. Pour l'ingestion des particules, outre la concentration totale des particules en plomb, il est important de connaître la fraction biodisponible du plomb. Cette dernière peut être approchée par la fraction bioaccessible (fraction du contaminant solubilisée dans le tractus gastro-intestinal). Cette dernière est considérée comme supérieure ou égale à la fraction biodisponible. C'est la première fois que la bioaccessibilité du plomb est mesurée sur des particules en milieu professionnel. En ce qui concerne l'inhalation, le potentiel toxique d'une particule semble être fonction non seulement de propriétés physiques intrinsèques (taille et surface spécifique) mais aussi de propriétés chimiques. En particulier, il a récemment été avancé que le potentiel rédox des particules induit un stress oxydatif qui pourrait être à l'origine des effets biologiques observés suite à leur inhalation par la génération d'espèces réactives de l'oxygène (ROS). L'objectif de ce travail est d'étudier l'influence de la taille des particules sur la bioaccessibilité du plomb ingéré et sur leur potentiel rédox. Il contribue à l'application et à la validation de ces deux tests chimiques qui pourraient devenir des outils d'évaluation des risques sanitaires répondant en particulier à l'objectif du règlement européen Reach de réduire les tests de toxicité sur animaux

    Structurally-controlled hydrothermal alteration in the syntectonic Neoproterozoic Upper Ruvubu Alkaline Plutonic Complex (Burundi): Implications for REE and HFSE mobilities

    International audienceThe Neoproterozoic Upper Ruvubu Alkaline Plutonic Complex (URAPC), Burundi, is located along the western branch of the East African Rift. It comprises oversaturated and undersaturated syenites and a shallow level carbonatite body (the Matongo carbonatite) that does not outcrop but has been sampled by drill-cores. The elliptic map contour of the URAPC points to a syntectonic emplacement. Large shear zones that were active during magmatic emplacement have accommodated a regional NE-SW shortening. Mineralization features of late-magmatic to hydrothermal origin are associated with the carbonatite, which, by itself, contains a dense network of calcitic veins. HFSE mineralization occurring as zircon and ilmenite megacrysts can be found in an area of intense and extensive K-fenitization, which lead to the transformation of the surrounding syenite into a dominant K-feldspar + biotite mineral assemblage (Inamvumvu area). Carbonatitic dykes (overprinted by a hydrothermal alteration) are present a few kilometers north of the Matongo carbonatite, within highly deformed zones in the syenite. These dykes occur along with Na-fenites (resulting from the transformation of the feldspathoidal syenite into an albite-dominant paragenesis) and are enriched in REE-minerals (monazite and ancylite-(Ce)). Many magmatic (pegmatoid) dykes and hydrothermal (quartz + hematite) veins also occur in shear zones in the URAPC. Most of them can be interpreted as tension gashes. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns of some carbonatite whole rock samples are highly disturbed, in relation to post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration. The HFSE and REE distribution in the minerals from the hydrothermal veins/dykes (calcitic veins within the carbonatite, carbonatite dykes overprinted by a hydrothermal alteration in deformed zones, and zircon and ilmenite megacrysts) attests for a complex behaviour of REE during alteration. Oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of the Matongo carbonatite and the carbonatitic dykes have a magmatic signature, with 7.2 < δ18O (vs. SMOW) < 8.5‰ and -4.7 < δ13C (vs. PDB) < -5.4‰ in agreement with the Sr isotopic composition. The oxygen isotope composition of zircon and ilmenite megacrysts (δ18OZr = 4 to 4.7‰, δ18OIlm = -4.3 to -1.5‰ respectively) also point to a magmato-hydrothermal origin of the forming fluids. Some samples of the Matongo carbonatite and the carbonatitic dykes, with high δ18O values (δ18O = 8.6 to 21.8‰), show evidence of a medium- to low-temperature hydrothermal alteration event by an aqueous fluid. Calcitic veins in the carbonatite record another alteration event, outlined by the co-variation of δ18O and δ13C values (δ18O = 16.3 to 24.7‰ and δ13C = -4.7 to 0.2‰), implying the involvement of a mixed H2O-CO2 fluid. As a whole, the circulation of fluids in the URAPC was initiated during magmatic emplacement and the geometry of this circulation was controlled by the syn-emplacement crustal scale shear zones.     Effect of repetitive potassium iodide on elderly rat’s thyroid

    Background: Nuclear power plant emergencies had often been accompanied by radioactivity release into the environment, thyroid cancer is one of the major health consequences due to the effect of radioactive iodine (131I) that emits ϒ ray and β particles resulting in thyroid DNA damage and late onset thyroid cancer. Intake of a single dose of potassium iodide (KI) is recommended to reduce this risk. However in case of prolonged radioiodine release as noticed during Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents, more than one dose of KI may be basic to ensure adequate protection [1]. Whereas a single dose of KI is admitted to be safe, knowledge about the effects of repeated KI administration are scarce, few studies demonstrated the potential efficiency of repetitive KI intake in humans [2] and non-human primates [3] without hormonal variations. These studies are relevant in the field of radiation protection and give a base evidence of the possible use of repetitive KI. On the other hand, we have studies on rodents that showed an impact of chronic iodine excess on pituitary thyroid axis function [4]. Our previous work on adult male rats demonstrated the safety of repeated administration of KI over 8 days [5]. Indeed in the elderly persons KI administration in case of nuclear emergency remains a topic of debate, because of the possible impact in cardiovascular diseases. Thyroid hormones are well-known for their profound effects on cardiovascular function and metabolism; myocardial and vascular endothelial tissues have receptors for thyroid hormones and are sensitive even to subtle changes in the concentrations of circulating pituitary and/or thyroid hormones i.e. subclinical hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. It is well established that hyperthyroidism induces a hyper-dynamic cardiovascular state, which is associated with a faster heart rate, enhanced left ventricular systolic and diastolic function whereas hypothyroidism is characterized by the opposite changes. Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the elderly, the prevalence and incidence increase with advancing age [6]. Several interventional trials showed that treatment of subclinical thyroid diseases improves cardiovascular risk factors, which implies potential benefits for reducing cardiovascular events. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the effects of repeated KI intake on the thyroid function of aged male rats. Methods: A twelve months old male rats were subjected to either KI or saline solution over 8 days. Clinical biochemistry, pituitary and thyroid hormones level, and thyroid genes expression were analyzed 30 days after the treatment discontinuation. Findings: urinary assessment shows a subtle increase of some parameters (Creatinin, Uric Acid, Urea, Glucose, Potassium, Sodium and Chlorine), plasma biochemistry reveals a subtle variation of some parameters (an increase of Creatinin, Glucose and phosphorus; and a decrease of Chlorine level). Regarding pituitary-thyroid hormones we get a significant decrease of TSH level without thyroid hormones variation. At the molecular level, we observe a significant increase of TPO (+100%), AIT (+299%) and Tg (+38%) mRNA expression. On the other hand we get a significant decrease of TSHR (-51%) mRNA expression. Conclusion and perspectives: Our first results indicate that repeated KI intake affects the clinical biochemistry and the pituitary-thyroid axis function in elderly rats. To go further we are investigating the impact of these variations on the cardiovascular function and its parameters. Cardiac output data, cardiovascular gene expression, oxidative stress and inflammatory analysis are being processed. This study will contribute to the evolution of iodine policy and the harmonization of the current KI guidelines

    Acupuncture as a Complementary Therapy for Cancer Care: Acceptability and Preferences of Patients and Informal Caregivers

    Background: Acupuncture can effectively manage cancer-related side effects, for both patients undergoing treatment and for cancer survivors. It may also be effective in managing physiological and psychological symptoms common among informal caregivers of cancer patients. Objectives: The aim of this survey was to explore the acceptability and preferences of cancer patients, cancer survivors, and their informal caregivers in relation to acupuncture. Methods: The survey was conducted from 20th November to 27th November 2018. The questionnaire was developed to explore acceptability and preferences, including motivation, symptoms to be addressed, and practical issues (location, cost, etc.), in relation to acupuncture. Results: The survey response rate was 94.5% in cancer patients and cancer survivors and 100% in caregivers. Acceptability of acupuncture was 34.5% (n = 40/116) and 48.0% (n = 26/54) in cancer patients and caregivers, respectively. About 52.5% (n = 21/40) of patients preferred to undergo acupuncture at the day center clinic, whereas caregivers had no specific preference. Patients and cancer survivors would use acupuncture for symptoms of fatigue (60%), listlessness (57.5%), and pain (47.5%). Informal caregivers expressed an interest in using acupuncture for their pain, stress, and sleeping difficulties 48.0% (n = 26/54). Conclusion: Cancer patients, cancer survivors, and informal caregivers would accept acupuncture as a complementary therapy. This openness and preference to acupuncture provide the foundations for this complementary therapy to be incorporated into holistic and supportive cancer care, both for patients and those supporting them

    Use of ecotoxicity test and ecoscores to improve the management of polluted soils: case of a secondary lead smelter plant

    International audienceWith the rise of sustainable development, rehabilitation of brownfield sites located in urban areas has become a major concern. Management of contaminated soils in relation with environmental and sanitary risk concerns is therefore a strong aim needing the development of both useful tools for risk assessment and sustainable remediation techniques. For soils polluted by metals and metalloids (MTE), the criteria for landfilling are currently not based on ecotoxicological tests but on total MTE concentrations and leaching tests. In this study, the ecotoxicity of leachates from MTE polluted soils sampled from an industrial site recycling lead-acid batteries were evaluated by using both modified Escherichia coli strains with luminescence modulated by metals and normalized Daphnia magna and Alivibrio fischeri bioassays. The results were clearly related to the type of microorganisms (crustacean, different strains of bacteria) whose sensitivity varied. Ecotoxicity was also different according to sample location on the site, total concentrations and physico-chemical properties of each soil. For comparison, standard leaching tests were also performed. Potentially phytoavailable fraction of MTE in soils and physico-chemical measures were finally performed in order to highlight the mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the use of a panel of microorganisms is suitable for hazard classification of polluted soils. In addition, calculated eco-scores permit to rank the polluted soils according to their potentially of dangerousness.
