On the Sensitivity of Massive Star Nucleosynthesis and Evolution to Solar Abundances and to Uncertainties in Helium Burning Reaction Rates
We explore the dependence of pre-supernova evolution and supernova
nucleosynthesis yields on the uncertainties in helium burning reaction rates.
Using the revised solar abundances of Lodders (2003) for the initial stellar
composition, instead of those of Anders & Grevesse (1989), changes the
supernova yields and limits the constraints that those yields place on the
12C(a,g)16O reaction rate. The production factors of medium-weight elements (A
= 16-40) were found to be in reasonable agreement with observed solar ratios
within the current experimental uncertainties in the triple alpha reaction
rate. Simultaneous variations by the same amount in both reaction rates or in
either of them separately, however, can induce significant changes in the
central 12C abundance at core carbon ignition and in the mass of the supernova
remnant. It therefore remains important to have experimental determinations of
the helium burning rates so that their ratio and absolute values are known with
an accuracy of 10% or better.Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journa
Analysis of Participation in Multifunctional Agriculture: U.S. Rice Farms
Multifunctional agriculture is particularly fundamental to some working lands conservation policies and programs, such as the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), Conservation Security Program (CSP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP). Farmers can also be engaged in providing recreational and agri-tourism services such as hunting, fishing, bird-watching, farm tours, petting zoos and hospitality services. Using the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) we analyze factors associated with participation in conservation, recreation and agri-tourism activities as a function of farm structure, farm financial measures, production practices, and socio-demographic characteristics of the farm operator. To estimate the functional relationships we estimate a binary logistic model where the dependent variable takes a value equal to one if the farm operator reports in the ARMS survey participation in conservation programs, recreation or agritourism. Results show that the level of farm operator education and cultural practices that use conservation technical assistance are significant at the 0.01 and 0.10 levels, respectively, in explaining participation. Farm financial characteristics were not significant. Els cnidaris bentònics
En aquest treball es presenten 85 espècies de cnidaris bentònics trobats als fons que envolten l'Arxipèlag de Cabrera. També es fa esment de la distribució bionòmica de les espècies més representatives i es compara la fauna trobada amb la de la immediata costa de Mallorca, la costa catalana, i, en general, les del litoral de la Mediterrània central i occidental.A check-list of the benthic Cnidaria inhabiting the Archipelago of Cabrera is presented, with comments on the bionomic distribution of the most representative species. The faunistic composition and the species distribution is very similar to the other Balearic islands and the species pool is representative of the coastal Mediterranean Cnidarian fauna
Spectroscopy of 13B via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at 115 AMeV
Gamow-Teller and dipole transitions to final states in 13B were studied via
the 13C(t,3He) reaction at Et = 115 AMeV. Besides the strong Gamow-Teller
transition to the 13B ground state, a weaker Gamow-Teller transition to a state
at 3.6 MeV was found. This state was assigned a spin-parity of 3/2- by
comparison with shell-model calculations using the WBP and WBT interactions
which were modified to allow for mixing between nhw and (n+2)hw configurations.
This assignment agrees with a recent result from a lifetime measurement of
excited states in 13B. The shell-model calculations also explained the
relatively large spectroscopic strength measured for a low-lying 1/2+ state at
4.83 MeV in 13B. The cross sections for dipole transitions up to Ex(13B)= 20
MeV excited via the 13C(t,3He) reaction were also compared with the shell-model
calculations. The theoretical cross sections exceeded the data by a factor of
about 1.8, which might indicate that the dipole excitations are "quenched".
Uncertainties in the reaction calculations complicate that interpretation.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
High spatial and spectral resolution long-range sensing using Brillouin echoes
High spatial (~cm) and spectral (~MHz) resolution Brillouin sensing is realized with enhanced signal to noise ratio using a pre-activated acoustic field and an optical phase control over the interrogating pulse. Pre-activation of the acoustic field preserves the Brillouin natural linewidth and a differential gain technique extends the method to long ranges. Experimentally, fully resolved measurements of the Brillouin frequency shift of a 5 cm spot perturbation at the far end of a 5 km fibre have been performed with a frequency resolution of 3 MHz ( 2 sigma ), using a 500 ps (5 cm) pi phase shift pulse
Entrepreneurial Orientation and Firm Performance in the Context of Upper Echelon Theory
Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is a firm-level phenomenon, which involves the firm’s prospects to take risks, be proactive, and be innovative. Most of the research assumes a positive EO-performance relationship adopting the EO-as-advantage perspective without providing enough theoretical foundations of the way EO enhances performance. This paper provides insights into the EO and firm performance relationship looking into the EO-as-experimentation perspective. Through EO-as-experimentation perspective, we argue for the importance of looking into the differential effects of each of the EO dimensions on firm performance in active and inactive firms. We hypothesized that the effect of each of the proactiveness and innovativeness dimension of EO on firm performance is positive among active firms and negative among inactive firms. Whereas risk taking dimension of EO is negative among active and inactive firms. Based on the results of firm fixed effect regression some empirical support for the hypotheses is presented and discussed
