A new experiment for the determination of the 18F(p,alpha) reaction rate at nova temperatures
The 18F(p,alpha) reaction was recognized as one of the most important for
gamma ray astronomy in novae as it governs the early 511 keV emission. However,
its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures. A direct measurement
of the cross section over the full range of nova energies is impossible because
of its vanishing value at low energy and of the short 18F lifetime. Therefore,
in order to better constrain this reaction rate, we have performed an indirect
experiment taking advantage of the availability of a high purity and intense
radioactive 18F beam at the Louvain La Neuve RIB facility. We present here the

Earthworm management in tropical agroecosystems
Ecological and demographic parameters of 26 species of native and exotic earthworms species common in tropical agroecosystems, with large environmental tolerance and/or extended distribution were investigated. Principal component analysis (PCA) isolated four groups : (i) large native endogeic and anecic species (16-32 g individual fresh wt) with long generation time (2-4 years), low fecundity (0.5-3.1 cocoons/year/adult) and one hatchling per cocoon ; (ii) medium size species (1.2-6 g) endogeic mesohumic, with intermediate fecundity (1.3-45 cocoons/year/adult) ; (iii) small species (0.17-1.25 g f.w.) mainly endogeic polyhumic, with short generation time (3-7 months), intermediate fecundity (10-68 cocoons/year/adult) and one hatchling per cocoon ; and (iv) generally small (80-150 mg f.w.) species mainly exotic and epigeic, with short generation time (1-3 months), very high fecundity (50-350 cocoons/year/adult) and up to three hatchlings per cocoon. Casts may be either large globular or small granular. The selective investigations of large organic particles and small mineral particles (clays) concentrates total organic matter in the casts. There is an intense mineralization rate of nitrogen in the casts (6-29% of organic N), exotic worms seeming to be less efficient than natives at mineralizing N. The mineral phosphorus content of casts is always at least 30% higher than in the non-ingested soil. All these worms ingest daily, on average, three times their own weight of soil at the adult stage (1-9) and much more when juvenile ; up to 1000 Mg dry soil/ha may transit yearly through earthworm guts. Cross-ancestry genome-wide association analysis of corneal thickness strengthens link between complex and Mendelian eye diseases
Central corneal thickness (CCT) is a highly heritable trait associated with complex eye diseases such as keratoconus and glaucoma. We perform a genome-wide association meta-analysis of CCT and identify 19 novel regions. In addition to adding support for known connective tissue-related pathways, pathway analyses uncover previously unreported gene sets. Remarkably, >20% of the CCT-loci are near or within Mendelian disorder genes. These included FBN1, ADAMTS2 and TGFB2 which associate with connective tissue disorders (Marfan, Ehlers-Danlos and Loeys-Dietz syndromes), and the LUM-DCN-KERA gene complex involved in myopia, corneal dystrophies and cornea plana. Using index CCT-increasing variants, we find a significant inverse correlation in effect sizes between CCT and keratoconus (r =-0.62, P = 5.30 × 10-5) but not between CCT and primary open-angle glaucoma (r =-0.17, P = 0.2). Our findings provide evidence for shared genetic influences between CCT and keratoconus, and implicate candidate genes acting in collagen and extracellular matrix regulation

Spatio-temporal structure of an earthworm community and soil heterogeneity in a tropical pasture (Carimagua, Colombia)
Only a small part of the spatio-temporal structures of earthworm distribution was correlated with soil properties. Small species were more abundant in patches were soil was more compact, while large species were associated with high root biomass and total C levels. The question whether earthworm spatiotemporal distribution induces similar patterns in soil properties or the contrary occurs is discussed. Our results suggest that earthworm community organization mostly corresponds to a non-equilibrium system where mobile earthworm populations influence soil properties. The overall effect of earthworm community on soil is difficult to assess due to the predominance of factors that preferentially express themselves at large scales in the ecological hierarchy
